object creation competition

Archive: 26 posts

Firstly I hope this is in the right section of the forum and it hasn't been done already.

How about a section on the forum where once a week a challenge is set to build an object.

competitors list their names to take part and have 7 days to create a predefined object (not an entire level or anything just an object)

each competitor can only submit one entry to be voted on by the other competitors

each competitor gets 3 votes and can't vote for them self. Entry with the most votes wins

during the week a small list of ideas for the next object are submitted and voted on.

for example an object theme could be a "sack boy powered vehicle" competitors have to build something anything as long as it moves and is powered by some action of the sack boy there could be certain rules like " no more than three logic gates" or "can only exist on one plane" things like that.

I am open to further ideas, expressions of interest or even if you want to shoot the idea down.

That sounds like a great idea to me although I wouldn't be winning anything that's for sure because I have absolutely no idea how to use logic gates.

I've tried loads of tutorials but I just can't get my head around how they work. They may aswell be written in Hieroglyphics because I'd understand them just the same.

If you have a contest to make something that doesn't require logic switches then count me in.

It might be cool if afterwards the winning object becomes available to lbpcentral members to use...but I dunno.2009-05-20 14:50:00

It would be a great idea. people could just try to make the best item rather than worries on how to use it in a level.2009-05-20 14:56:00

Sounds like a reasonable idea, could be varied each time with mechanical / logic / artistic / puzzles / creatures etc. Or combinations of themes. Maybe keep the definitions quite loose and open to interpretation, to encourage creativity.

The "only x logic gates" rule is gonna fall flat on it's face though, my LBP logic is now very fluffy in terms of identifying subcomponents as "gates", but I get that this is just an "off the top of my head" type example.

I'd never have time enough to take part, but it would be fun to take a peek to watch the battle!

Ya know.. it might be fun to allow others on the forum to vote as well. Either way, I would still find it fun to at least watch from the sidelines.

We have some great competitions coming already, though a weekly one sounds like a good idea. There would have to be a team of dedicated judges as the voting system is open to flaws. Competitors should also not be allowed to use pre-made objects.

It probably won't be organised by the staff so you guys would have to organise it amongst yourselves, but I'm sure we could support it with some XP prizes if it became popular.

i dont mine helping start this!

well you can be the head judge,
get 2 or 3 more people,

then create a thread in the "community contests"
section.

Name it, object creation - round 1

or something like that,
like killian said, im sure if you ask nicely, we could get people giving xp prizes!

PS: round 1 could be something like,
create a useful contraption, (something specific, but not that specific, so its open for lots of ideas, good to get the contests growing!)

]Edit:you must hae posted while i was typing ^

I would be happy to get it started if expressions of interest keep coming, I will need some help with a few things.

complex posts in threads on the forum ie adding a poll etc
creating the rules for the comp (Not to many lets keep it fun)
creating the voting system
how each new challenge will be decided.
how to submit your work

also to get this going, should I start a new official thread (if so where?) and leave this one for discussion of the idea and submitting of new ideas?

Well, polls are easy, there should be an add poll option of the new thread page, it's pretty easy to follow.

My only input on the rules is that I'd rather you didn't enforce making the submissions public. Some of my stuff I'm happy for anyone to have, and in that case I'd give it out anyway. Other stuff I'd rather keep to myself, and I'm sure many people are the same.

Open ended subjects are good, as creativity / uniqueness can be part of the judging.

I think killian is right about the voting system, but it's probably a good way to begin, then if this gets off the ground a weekly panel could be found.

Like Killian said, we've already got a couple of contests in the pipeline, but you guys are free to organize something amongst yourselves. 2009-05-21 00:04:00

It sounds pretty cool I'd certainly be interested in competing a few times. A few challenges i could think of would be building objects within a certain amount of thermo, and with only a few materials.

For getting the challenges set up, i'd just say send the items to another account via the friends system, and then put them all in a level to be judged/viewed. (similar to the Boss Rush contest)

Since alls well that ends well... that is some funnny ....

*ahem* This is a great idea. Some bragging rights... a pinch of reputation enhancement. New tools which hopefully will raise the level of levels, through in some xp points. Voila! Instant Pudding!

Polling is listed in site guide book (not hard), I think burn victim is right all submissions should be available in one level for testing/voting. I myself would open the voting up to all LBPC members in a very limited window/timeframe... but that's just me. I also feel that all entries should become the property of the community at large but credited accordingly. In this fashion, entrants would clearly be enriching the community on a weekly basis. If you don't want to share your inventions I would suggest not entering a contest or closing it off to the general site. If that is the final consensus, I for one would not be interested. Man! and they call Barrack Obama a socialist. What's happened to me?

This is clearly however... just my opinion.

I'm not against sharing my creations, I just don't see why it is necessary to enforce sharing to take part in something "fun". Companys and employers and big, nasty, horrible corporations force individuals to give up their IP, it just feels a little authoritarian saying "you can take part in our competition, but we now own your creation and will let the world have a free-for-all on it".

I'm clearly being over-dramatic here, and I'd generally be happy to share stuff. But it could be that it's part of a level in progress and I want to wait until the level is complete before sharing, or have it as a giveaway in my level, etc, or I just want it for myself. I'd probably resent the fact I'm being told I have to, rather than the actual sharing.

Just my opinion though Gravel, I take your point on the sharing and if it was made compulsory then so be it.

i see both of your points.... how about this- objects don't need to be given out in the level, (though its appreciated ) but creators at least keep an open mind if someone asks through the forums?
I certainly understand not wanting to give items away willy-nilly (especially with piracy issues and whatnot >.>) but... as long as its not an entirely closed issue of getting the item, its okay. This way, if someone wants the item, 1) they have to be a member here (so no random ppls ) 2) they have to ask you personally for it 3) you're gonna figure out for yourself how much you trust them, and release your item accordingly.

I just thought of a few more rules of sorts, you should really limit the level packs allowed in use. That way people can enter and have a fair standing, whether or not they puchased a pack. I understand that some contests will require it (MGS paint switches are DANGED handy health bars) but i think the more the merrier would be nice .

And Play Create Share...
heres my cynical opinion of a large proportion of the outside community's (non LBPC) view on those terms...
Play: PLA_MY_LVL_PLZ!!!!1!
Create: OMG I maded a rocket cheetah, and he's blue! lulz
Share:H4H!

All i can say is... they're doing it wrong >.>

Yeah i think encourage sharing and encourage forum members to ask for stuff, but not enforce.

Can all competition entries be named "omg i maded a <insert object> and its <insert feature>!1!!".

Idea for round 1: Make the best coloured rocket cheetah. Seriously though, a custom textures competition one week would be pretty cool (paint this NPC or something). That would open up to different breeds of creators.

Yea, stickering would be a good one. I also thought of something like "make an object using only these items" where the items are premade.2009-05-21 21:45:00

Okay there seems to be some interest and there have been some good suggestions.

I will post the Round 1 of the first object creation competition in the community contest forum.

This will be a pilot for further rounds and as such will be structured slightly differently and will be improved on based on results.

it will be largely run on the honor system where some of the rules are concerned.

and there will be two weeks for the construction time this will allow 2 weekends plus anytime you can get in durring the week.

Burn v I no longer have this counter, when I was having profile problems I dumped and lost so much... anyway since Cornish Yarg I can't get the blue walls in Shriwaryi's(sp) device levels to fall to proceed to the end and collect this important treasure. I tried contacting her thru here (lbpc) and psn but to know avail. Can you friend me and send this item to me? I really could build from scratch but dont see the point *sticks point in eye* Owww!

I really dont have many psn friends so if your so inclined...

Isn't 2 weeks a tad too much for just one object?
I'm just saying since people can build entire levels (and good ones) in 2 weeks...
these should be able to be built in a day or two, but a week would give time for more participants to enter.
Well, at least that's my opinion.

I think one week is enough as well but thought id make it 2 weeks as not to scare anyone off..... but it doesn't matter now as CreateNPlay jumped in and has set things up. so i will enter there as soon as he/she has it going.2009-05-22 06:37:00
