INSPIRATION: and where you find it (A visual stimulus thread)

Archive: 24 posts

I've been spending too much time here on the forums 'reading' and not enough in game... was starting to think I was going through a weird form of burnout/withdrawl... ideas never really stopped coming but... I wasn't building either... One morning I woke up and looked at the same garbage can I see every morning... except on this day, it was alive and filled with inspiration... It got me thinking.

I would like this thread to be anything but words. A real change of pace for my/our brain. Be it; photo; lyric; color; art; family; etc., post it!

So now well all have a place to go and be inspired!

Ya i'd agree this is a great thread! When I started my new level the other day, I just started with a general theme I thought would be fun. Like a scary house and ran with it. It's going pretty well so far

I've seen this thread before but never clicked on it. Anyway, that is a very interesting inspiration Gravel.

The only inspiration I had last was from looking at a Killzone 2 video and deciding to make my latest level project (The Escape) with modern textures. It was only a short part of the video I watched so I could see if I wanted to borrow it from someone.

If I didn't watch that video then I would not have even started making The Escape.

Link to the thread here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=11654) (has pictures of first part of level)

So, instead of borrowing Killzone 2 I borrowed Assassin's Creed anyway. Even though Killzone 2 looks good, it plays pretty bad from what I've played in the demo of it. When I finish making The Escape I want to make a level that has textures similar to those in Assassin's Creed or a level based on Assassin's Creed all together (easily done with MGS pack middle eastern textures).

I also hope more people post in this thread.

A little confused... Is this thread only for Lbp level design inspiration? Or for inspiration in general?

And..... are we posting images/video/music that inspired us in making something, or TO inspire others?

I guess anything goes... so for now I'll post this linky here

Wow, Thanks guys I had given up to be honest on this thread... Pitcard, YES EXACTLY, that video is so good... I had to get another glass of wine to properly make it impossible to wipe this smile off my face.

SASGUNR, it is looking very good, I think you made the right choice when you dropped what you were doing and followed your inspiration!

I'm glad you guys liked it, that dude who does the animations has lots more on his profile. He did a video for swedish electropop artist Familjen, and lots of nice adverts.

Vimeo is a place for people make their own videos, and isn't full of spam like youtube. Lots of really beautiful stuff on it, just dig around.

The track is Slow Bicycle by M?m.
Really nice 3D rendering that reacts to the music. Maybe not as impressive as the video for Autechre's Gantz Graf... but that might blow peoples minds >_>

I remember seeing a bunch of those in some art book. They're like freezeframes from movies. Each has such a descriptive scene set up, you can almost imagine the rest of the film forming around it.2009-05-31 19:36:00

Maybe I should kick-start this ol' thing again.

Does anyone here use Deviantart??? Its an absolutely brilliant place for any visual artist, for sharing your own art, AND for appreciating others.

I'm also finding it pretty much the best place for stock images and reference shots. Theres a whole category of art on there only for stock images, but I often find its better to go into the photography section, you get much more natural looking images.

Anywho, I dunno if much people draw on here, I know Gravel has some skillz though

Here's my favourites so far, and feel free to check out some of my old stuff I uploaded. I only really joined recently. And I'll only have time to upload more recent stuff when my exams are done.

I used to look at deviantart - good site but a little abused now I feel.

As for inspiration, I can honestly say that I rarely need any. I'm not blowing my own trumpet - far from it, but I just think that any work of art based on something else then becomes a part clone of the original and is therefore not truly creative.

I find a good way to get the artistic juices flowing is to deliberately make your mind think in a strange and wonderful way.

For instance, if you want to create a new level, why not base it on something really, really wacky but simple - like a drain-pipe or plant pot, or cushion or needle and thread, or a manicure set...

... no they're no good, but it might make you think of something related that would be better...

... and it would be COMPLETELY original.

I find that often I have a very connected set of thoughts.... I may think of something and that might me remind me of something else, and that can go on for some time... usually ending in me remembering, too late, I had to do something important.....

But it brings artistic inspiration too, but more often when listening to music..... I like to see how it fits into things artistically, and in fact the other day I wanted to do an LBP music video on 'I am the Walrus'.... but alas, no Capture Device. Video games too, although I have to disagree with what Rhy said.... Often inspiration turns not into just a clone, but a different artistical interpretation of that source.....

Inspiration is completely based on your own experiences and memories. So different things will inspire different people. But this thread is really about posting things that opened your mind to a whole new world of possibility. Things like that can really be inspiring to almost anybody.

Here's something beautiful a friend directed me to.

Best image so far (for self-inspiration purposes, some of the others are really cool)!!! I've never thought of doing that before! Very useful! Thanks man... it's like a not-so-blank canvas .

Gonna invert the colours and print that out, already see a few pictures in there .

Sorry I keep spamming this place with music videos... but these days visual design and graphics are just too sick. And music videos are really a very handy format for outputting artists' ideas, in terms of length, and in terms of concept freedom.

And by these days, I actually mean back in early 2000's
I'm really surprised no one's overtaken this stuff yet, or not that I've seen commercially.

Alex Rutterford (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Rutterford) who worked with Chris Cunningham (who's videos are probably a bit graphic for this place) has some seriously immaculate CG design. He's done a good few adverts too. You'll probably remember that PSP ad he did, where the pink PSP logo's form into crack-addict morphing bots O_o

Gantz Graf - music by Autechre
YouTube - Autechre - Gantz Graf - HD 720p version

You'll probably have more of a seizure if you click the link and watch in HD

Verbal - music by Amon Tobin

Only discovered this one recently.

YouTube - "Go to Sleep" Radiohead (directed by Alex Rutterford) - music by Radiohead

Embedding's disabled on this one :S

Every single musical idea mapped into his visuals, for all three of these videos. I think Gantz Graf is the most intricate piece though, you can see every sound wave as a visual representation, but I don't think people will regard it as music ^^
