Commentary from this month's creators:

Commentary from Joe Vaux:
I had been working with my friends Ken and Tonny over at Von Dutch and Planet Illogica for about a year. These two are looking for ways to use their skills and connections to help artists market themselves to a broader audience. Early this year I got the call from Ken to come down and meet the folks of PlayStation and design a LittleBigPlanet level. A day or two later I was sitting at the Von Dutch office in front of flat screen TV with Leo, the guy who produced LittleBigPlanet, gawking at this amazing game.

Leo led me through a basic tour of the game?s potential. I could tell it was just the tip of the iceberg. While other artists around me worked away on their levels with a PS representative, I felt like I needed some time to let what I had seen sink into my thick skull. That night I sat down with pen and paper and sketched out a schematic for what would become the Joe Vaux level. The next day I cruised over at lunch to present my drawing to Leo. He seemed inspired. Knowing I needed to get back to work, Leo took the drawing and began the construction.

A couple of weeks went by and I get and email from KG. ?Have you seen your level?? he asks. Then he iChats some stills from the world I designed. My jaw hit the floor. Now I have to admit, I?m not much of a gamer. I just don't have time between being a father, an assistant director on Family Guy and a painter. But, if I did have time I would eat this game for breakfast, lunch and dinner. What a blast to design and build your own game. Kudos to PS!

To the fans of PS and LittleBigPlanet: Don?t judge me, enjoy and bask in the ability to create and share with the magic of this fantastic game. Thanks to all the the great people at PlayStation (Katie, Ginger, Leo and Jeff) and to Ken Goldstein and Tonny S. for presenting this great opportunity. You guys Rock!!!

Commentary from Sarah Burke:
Hi there, I?m Sarah Burke and I?m a professional skier. When I was at the X Games this year, I met up with some of the folks from Sony to work on creating my very own level for LittleBigPlanet. I had played plenty of video games before, but never had a hand in design which made me super nervous. Lucky for me the Sony peeps made it super easy. They first showed me a few of the levels of LittleBigPlanet that were already made, so I got a good idea of the feel of the game. Then we just started talking and brainstorming to flush out an overall concept for the level.

What I thought was most appropriate ? and most fun, since the kids playing it would actually be at X Games ? was a level about my trip to X Games, what I hoped to achieve while in Aspen, and the reward I would give myself if/when I won Gold!

We fiddled around with the different looks of the character, the car and the surfing. I told Mark lots of details of what I liked about X Games, how slopestyle was an event this year and how I loved to surf almost as much as I love to ski. Then I left to go practice on the mountain while the Sony guys spent some extra time putting some spit and shine to create my super-cool level.

Everything about making the game was super easy and very fun. I loved working with all the people at PlayStation and they helped to make my LittleBigPlanet level exactly what I had imagined.

The only bummer to the whole experience is that I was scheduled to play the level with tons of kids in the sponsor village on the Sunday of X Games. I had already won the Gold Medal in Superpipe, just like in my level. Unfortunately, in the slopestyle event on Saturday, I took one of the worst falls of my life and hurt my back really badly. I wish that I could have hung out with all the kids on Sunday and played, but the doctors told me not to leave my bed. Hopefully we can make it up next year!

More info on 'The Patch' here:
As most of you know, we?ve been spending the past few months touring and showing LittleBigPlanet at various promotional events. We?ve had the pleasure to meet a wide variety of great personalities from artists, to athletes, to musicians and allowed them to get their hands on LBP Create tools. Some provided great inspiration, some were extremely hands on, and in the end we came up with some great creations together, levels that in one way or another say something about what they are about. This Friday, you?ll be able to go online in LittleBigPlanet and check out a new hot spot destination on called ?the patch?.

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3663/3541372064_4bc1194f13.jpg

On ?the patch? you?ll find LBP Original levels created by inspiring individuals and interesting personalities. For our first showcase, we are spotlighting Joe Vaux, Sarah Burke, and Nathan Cabrera. Throughout the week, you?ll hear from several of them and their own experiences creating their LBP Original, so stay tuned the rest of the week and find out what other personalities you?ll find on ?the patch?.

Sounds very interesting, I wonder what they'll come up with! I also wonder how much input Mm had with the design and creation...2009-05-18 21:42:00

i just hope it becomes just as fair as us,
meaning they use the same stuff as us, not mm's sphere items,
and special items that dont follow the boundaries, items with curves

I love how they are always trying to keep this game fresh

I'll be checking out the patch Friday then

I thought the patch might of been to make the Play,Create,Share things work on your profile, as they talked about them in the recent Life In LittleBigPlant: EP4 video

As long as they're made by MM-trusted people, I'll be glad to play them. Also, if they use MM tools, maybe we can catch something new! (Like the early global lighting? perhaps?)

I dunno, just a speculation. Still nice though. Monster Kit also looks interesting.

I remember they had that winter games thing in CO, where there was a contest for people to show some snowboarders how to make a level. This seems like an extension of that.2009-05-19 02:40:00

That looks pretty good. I really like Mm's ideas for LBP, it's like they're always keeping it fresh. Hopefully I'll enjoy these levels just as much as Mm's masterpieces.2009-05-22 22:20:00

These folks aren't visual artists as far as I can tell, so I'm not surprised the quality isn't through the roof. Given this and the fact that they are new to LBP, I think they deserve to be cut some slack. Still, I'm a little surprised that Mm is actually "hyping" their work.2009-05-23 00:19:00

I think the problem with 3 of them is that they don't have music

The gallery and that snowboarding level might of been ok if they had some music and sound effects

And i actually thought that the one by Joe Vaux was brilliant
It was really fun and i had to play it 3 times before i'd seen everything

Edit:

- Tidied up the first post
- Added links to videos of each level
- Added more info, including upcoming levels

If the links don't work then tell me and i'll try to fix them

I have to say, I'm extremely disappointed with these levels. The only one that was KINDA ok was the one made by the skier. I really hope Mm helps with the rest of the levels, these really weren't good at all. Guess I shouldn't have had any expectations (didn't have high expectations in the first place) since they're not experienced with this game. I was just hoping they would have had some help with making them.2009-05-23 03:19:00

The 'celebrities' (emphasis on those comas, people) only design the levels, the ones that suck at making them are the SCE representatives who actually realize them. You'd think that with an advertisement like this you'd get top professionals. Some don;'t even have music?2009-05-23 07:17:00

SCE Reps make them? Wow...Those levels were crap, my baby cousin could make a better one just by using the analog stick as a pacifier and mashing X randomly. All that hype for nothing...2009-05-23 07:32:00

well that was 5 minutes of my life I'm never getting back...

What I don't get is that MM have great level designers, are recruiting new great level designers yet with all these full time level designers, no levels ever seem to come of it? This isn't even me moaning about it, I genuinely don't understand...

I'm sure the next batch of "Patch" levels will be better. Mm will definitely pay attention to the feedback they get. Regarding the quality though, think about it, the first time we all tried out create mode, our creations weren't uber fantastic. All I hope is that these "celebrities" try to improve and make more levels than just their 1st 2009-05-23 11:07:00

you have to remember that the point of this is to show the creator's personalities and ideas through what they create

we make levels so that other people can enjoy them, the creators of these levels made them because THEY thought it was fun

i just don't think Mm should advertise the levels in the way they did, it gives people high expectations and as a result they end up disappointed

and the least they could of done is put music in them xD

I agree with all of the other posts here. A bit of a waste of time really. And why no music? As we all know, it's as simple as placing one object.
The only useful things were a few of the stickers but even these I could have produced at home.
Lets hope things improve somewhat.
They should've asked one of us to make the levels!

that'd be a great idea!

Get all of the creators on LBPC to contribute towards a level and then have Mm hype it up for us xD

OK I'm going to lose it soon! My Below The Root levels only have about 100 plays each after more than a month yet these yahoos not only get free advertisement and endless plays of their levels but also probably got paid too

And the patch levels are "weak" IMO. Why doesn't MM check out some of our levels instead. Maybe to MM we're just a bunch of nobodies. More proof that things still don't fit together as they should in the life of an LBP level creator.

actually now i think about it, Mm probably had nothing to do with this

I think the creators only mentioned PS representatives, not Mm.
And everything about this was posted on the PS Blog - Mm haven't said anything about it on their site

Hmm... i wonder how thaat would go...

Mm #1: We should ask some of the players to make levels for "The patch."
Mm#2: So you're sayin Players would make levels for other players?
Mm#1: Yeah! After all, they already know how to build levels!
Mm#2: But isn't it what's been done from the begining? Players making levels for others? >_>
Mm#1: Oh yeah...

Never expected these celebrity levels to be any good. Instead I'd play whatever from the spotlight here. This is where you'll find the best levels. When they changed the cool pages refresh system I thought it was awesome at first. Now the stupid bombdrop levels are uploaded more and more. I'm finding levels either by checking good creators favourite list or this site.2009-05-23 20:12:00
