Rayman - Bongo Hills v1.5

Archive: 24 posts

It's a remake of Bongo Hills from the original Rayman game! (as the title suggests)

I've put a ton of effort into making this feel as close as possible to the real thing -
using detailed and accurate visuals, and separate materials to keep the depth
(not very thermometer friendly)

It's as close as possible to the original level up until the half way point -
from then on it's a mash up of features from later on in the original

Here are a few things you can expect to see

Here's a video of the original Bongo Hills
It's a speedrun, so you might not see everything i included
YouTube - Rayman (PS1) Level 5 - Bongo Hills Speed Run (Any %)

Oh and if you can find all 3 secret cages, you get access to a copyable version of the level so
you can steal whatever you want from it

I might give F4F to constructive comments - but there's no guarantee because i'm lazy ^^

Lookin' good, I think I remember you putting a thread about this on the projects section. Don't forget to send this to djlols@sackcast.com and it might get featured on SackCast Episode 1! http://www.sackcast.com/2009/05/level-review-submissions/2009-05-18 21:19:00

Nice job Dexiro. Loved all the custom artwork and use of colors and materials. You did a fantastic job weaving those patterns together to make your platforms. I loved the way it played and looked from beginning to end. Although there were a couple of platforms that less experienced players will find tricky, I personally liked the level of challenge you presented.

I saw a bunch of visible emitters near the beginning, one after the lightning area, and one at the end. You may also want to hide the motor bolts on the rotating platforms. Also...there is a checkpoint near the beginning that is being emitted? Not sure what that was for..

Overall a great homage to Rayman. Fans will love it. Congratz on a job well done!

thanks for the comment ^^

i'll take a look at that emitted checkpoint you mentioned - i can't remember seeing anything like that before

thanks for telling me about the bolts and emitters too, i'll get them sorted out

edit:

could you tell me more about the checkpoint being emitted?
i still can't find anything like that

O.K. second time through. Even more challenging. Got all three secrets! I loved the platforming above the bongo drums..and coming back was even funner. The first and last hidden areas were great. The second one seemed like it needed some more pay-off...more bubbles I think. What do you think about adding bubbles to the rotating platforms too?

P.S. didn't notice the check point..this time. Maybe I was seeing things..lol.

updated:
- hidden emitters and bolts
- added point bubbles to the 2nd challenge
- extended a platform to make exiting the rocket thing a bit less awkward

thanks for the feedback jaeyden

checked this out, and I think you did a wonderful job in the translation. Rayman is one of my favorite old platformers, and it's nice to see you did it justice. There is one part that was rather tricky. Might turn lesser players off, But I managed. Like jaeyden said It's a good challenge that holds up to the original, as that one was also challenging. Excellent work!!!!2009-05-18 23:43:00

i've started doing some optimizing to free up some thermo space

anyone think of anything i could add with the extra space?
(i only have about 1 block free so far)

i was thinking of adding some lights but i have no idea how to use them effectively xD

Ok, played this yesterday.
Straight away I was stunned by the visual style. the musical notes in particular were particularly spectacular. the musical instruments were great to.
The only fault i found it that the clouds that moved about were difficult to stand on. Perhaps using a thin layer for the detail and making the actual platform flat?
I also think the level would have been even better with musical notes and such in the front layer. Maybe thats just because I love the musical notes, but they were fantistic imho.

Checked it out the other day and thought it looked good. I vaguely remember the original game but I don't think I ever played it. Kept having that nagging sense of deja vu when checking out your characters. lol

It's a fun level with some good platforming challenge but I kept getting frustrated on the clouds. I don't recommend changing it - it's just my opinion on them.

I rated it 5 stars even though I had some trouble with your clouds because it looks good and I think is accurate to the original game. Thanks for sharing it!

There's a reason why the clouds aren't made with a thin layer
Throughout the level i wanted to keep the depth of all the materials -
as in i wanted my clouds to look like a 3d cloud instead of a rectangle with a 2d cloud in front

I was going to make the top edge of all of the clouds flat as well, but i seems it doesn't make them any easier to stand on

I think the musical notes are already on the front layer most of the time
Find all the cages and you can take your own copy

Added a video of the original Bongo Hills

You should be able to pick out which features i used in my own version

You finished it!!!
Judging from the pictures, you really nailed the characters.

Looking forward to play this.

Pretty much echo the thoughts of everyone else here, it looks and plays fantastic, with the exception of the clouds. I think I spent as long on the section where you bounce twice then onto a sideways moving cloud as the rest of the level. I found it unbelievably frustrating and it kind of tarred my experience of an otherwise fun level.

I agree with keeping them the same material ect, cause they do look good how they are, have you experimented with making them slightly wider and flat on top? it should be easier to guage jumps and landings etc like that.

Other than that the only fault I found was there is still a visible emitter towards the end.

On the positive side, I love the style of it. I haven't actually played the original but watched the video and it looks like you've captured the feel well, which a lot of tribute levels seem to fail on IMO. And there was some really good unintrusive use of cameras, something else I rarely see in LBP

4* and funky!

Fixed a load of problems that you probably never knew existed xD

Oh and i've made the top of the clouds a bit flatter - but i don't think it's made a difference

But more importantly, i've added LEDs!
It looks a lot more polished now and colourful

I think some of them might be a bit too bright, but i'm gonna leave it for now

edit:

clouds now have an invisible flat edge

i think they're a lot easier to use now

another edit:

- added a lot more point bubbles

- rocket thing shouldn't get stuck anymore

I found this level great too, I found it a colourful, fun, challenging level that wasn't too hard, in fact, I didn't have much trouble with beating it. Now onto the pros and cons:

Pros:
+ Great visual style, from the youtube video in your original post, you nailed the visual style of the actual game
+ Great character design
+ Nice challenging platforming elements
+ Having secret cages is a nice idea
+ It's a pretty accurate remake, something I rarely see in LBP
+ I found the clouds really good, and fun to hop from one to another

Cons:
- I know it's a remake, but I found it quite easy. Maybe you could make it just a bit harder?
- I didn't know what to do with the clouds at first. You could add a hint telling you to keep jumping on them to get higher
- It could do with a bit more detail in the background

Overall, I gave your level 5 stars and a heart. It was a great remake!

If i had any thermo left i would of made the level a LOT longer with some much harder obstacles towards the end.
I really wanted to recreate the background from the original too, but there was no way i'd have enough space for it xD

I really wanted to include the dark stage with all the eyes firing lightning at you that you can see in that vid.

And there was another music level in rayman that i really wanted to include called Gong Heights where you have to walk across a load of huge clouds -
i wanted to have a few sections of that as a bonus area in Bongo Hills

Excellent level there Dexiro! Needless to say, you improved alot of Fort Husky. I always had a particular love at the first Rayman and you pretty much nailed it here. It DOES look and feel like Rayman LBP-ised.

The lenght of your level is just right and I like there's secrets. It really did entice me to play another time to get everything. I wish more creator would actually do that. I also like that there's no time wasted reading anything, not story, just straight to the point level and a nice one at that.

On the darker side of things I had a little bit of problems with your clouds sometimes. At one place it was the proxi switch making things hard (maybe the range was too small) and at another I fell on some invisible ground right beside a cloud. If you care to know where those 2 places are, I could go back and take a picture if you will. Also, you have a purple circle constantly respawning in your golden crest right beside the leaderboard.

Anyhow, 4 stars + heart from me.

thanks

I've fixed the respawning circle, and done my best to make the clouds work a bit better

There isn't really much i can do about the clouds though, proxi switches are a pain sometimes. This is why i want Mm to give us an impact switch

Hey, Just played your level.

Evan though i have never played Rayman before, i was still impressed with the cartoony visuals, they looked good.Gameplay had a consistent difficulty throughout.I loved the replayability as you will see in my comment on your level, made things more interesting. My main gripe i dont think anyone has said is that some checkpoint are spread far apart.I got through a annoying cloud part and them a obstacle with flutes. I died somehow and the screen zoomed a long way back, causing. This doesnt matter but another thing that would be nice is if you would make your glass parts flow better. As in dont have an uphill that slows me down causing me to have to jump up. I also have to mention that im 2nd on the scoreboard Nice level, 4 star, and hearted.

If you do ever get around to F4F on my level, in sig

Took my time in getting round to this - so sorry for that
But it is a very good level, even though I have not played the original I could tell this was very similar. I very much liked the fact that you gave away a copyable version and I had to play it through again because I wanted to win it

Pros:
+Lovely design
+Lots of good characters
+Fun
+Cute visuals
+Lots of unlockables
+Copyable version
+Secret Areas

Cons:
-The clouds got frustrating for me - I would suggest making them either larger, or having a larger "flat" area as opposed to it looking like a cloud
-When you got the P Prize bubbles, a couple of the times the P just fell on the floor. I suggest making it dissolve if possible.

Overall though this was a fun well designed level so I rated it five stars
Good work

Alrighty then... playing this now, so "just played this level" by the time you read this

The music is visible at the start- do you want that?

Small chunks of visible dark matter in your flutes.

Noticed some emitters on visible dark mater- on the section where you're going down a slant on the bongo drums that are (duh) emitted and dissapearing. You have to fall down and die to see them... but they're there, and i saw them several times ;p. I'd spruce up the dark matter if you could too.

For the P bubbles, it would be nice if you made the P dissapear too- all you have to do is make the P's out of dissolve, and put a key on the bubble and a key switch hooked up to the P. When the bubbles popped, the key leaves, and causes the P to dissolve via the switch. easy peasy .

As mentioned before, very nice design, reminiscent of the old Rayman game (yes i played it )... i think some of my points need adressing though
4* from me.
