"How to make a good boss battle"

Archive: 5 posts

Have you ever had a perfect level, but you need a BIG ending? Do you have enough space on the themomiter that you could make the map 5 times over? Well if you do...or at least the first thing...then you might want to consider a boss battle. Making a boss battle may be very challenging because of all the complex items you need to make before you can finish.

Part 1: The idea
When making a boss battle, consider the ideas.
-What should the boss be like?
-What should happen?
-Is it possible to make this?
-Is it related to the map?
-Can I make it?
-Will it work?

With all these ideas, you will be on your way to making a perfect boss battle :arg:
-Note- Try drawing it down...or making a smaller version first.

Part 2: The intro
In a boss battle, don't make the player just walk in and get blasted by a swarm of plasma! Go out of the way to make a decent introduction to the boss and what his weaknesses are. Don't flat out SHOW them to you, he needs to hint them here and there. For example, at the end of the MGS pack, you end up fighting a metel gear rex. Liquid tells you "good thing I don't have and BRIGHT COLORED WEAK SPOTS". He just hinted you that the MGR has weakspots. Now if the enemy is smaller and needs to go into a larger machine, give him an exit, and re-enter him into the boss.

Part 3: The boss
Use disolvable materials to be the ammount of hits the boss can take, and make it so he can take a couple, before he finally dies. And if maby, make multiple waves before he finally goes down. But when you destroy part 1, make the boss activate a new power or power up. Then, give him more power to increase his difficulty. After he dies, make a giant explosion that kills him, and not you.

Part 4: The ending
After your boss dies, it's not the ending yet! Make people congragulate you. Make the boss angry at you. Make him sad, and make him feel bad that he ever crossed with you. Then add the scoreboard, and maby make him a prize for acing the map, I mean come on! How hard was it to DESTROY that guy!

I hope these tips help you think twice before inserting that scoreboard.

Great idea and I would love to do that but never have because I simply don't know how!!

I haven't got a clue how to use logic switches to make something like that work. I'd never even heard of them before playing LBP. I've tried loads of tutorials but I'm still completely baffled by them.

If you need help with logic, i suggest you check out Feloniuscat's wonderful blogs on logic on this site.

As to the original post (on topic lol) Agreed that boss battles are cool, and definitely a great way to end the level... but thats about where my opinion and yours part ways.

You mention asking whether its possible in the brainstorming phase... yea, you obviously can't make EVERYTHING imaginable, but you can get pretty darn close. Just because it seems impossible to you doesn't mean taht its impossible to someone else. Asking others for help can improve your work 10fold, and often yields solutions you wouldnt normally have imagined

Making a smaller version is a bad idea (IMO) for the most part. Mechanics that work in miniature don't work the same when made larger. Larger pieces=more weight= more stress on parts and pieces. Besides, if you're working with a large shape, theres more room to maneuver- small things can require some VERY precise measurements to get them to work right.

An intro isn't always necessary. If you notice, MM didn't do an intro for the construction site boss- but its still a good boss. When a player figures out how to kill your monstrosity on their own, its very fulfilling on their part

Boss construction doesn't need to be all dissolve and explosives. Sure, they give very dramatic exits, but not everything needs to go up in a puff of smoke like that. A simple one shotted monster brain will destroy your monster as easily as dissolve, and more dramatically, as the thing falls apart.

There doesn't necessarily need to be an exit thing either- if you're fighting a random giant space alien, its still a boss, but it probably won't be sad for fighting you, it will be dead.

but like i said, this is all my personal opinion (mainly BC of how i build bosses, the fact that i hate working with explosives, and how i've implemented them in my various levels) and your point about adding a boss battle is well taken.

Taking the time to make a boss is definitely a plus in my book

My best boss tips:

You can make the phases of a boss fight REALLY easily, not much logic involved. The best way to do this is mag switches.

Place a mag switch on the boss itself, close to either a brain or part of the boss that disappears when you hit it enough with a paintanator (if you're having a paintanator fight). You can have protective layers around the brains made of dissolve, stick a paintanator switch on them, and set them to dissolve the protective layers. This way you have to fight your way to the heart of the beast. Back to the boss itself being a bunch of switches... with the mag switch close to the brain or dissolve material, turn it to inverted, and one time. Then place a mag key ON the brain itself (or ON the dissolve) so when the brain is hit or the dissolve goes away from the paint switch, the mag switch on the boss will turn ON since it's set to inverted.

Now what to do with these switches? Below the fight out of sight just stack blocks of dissolve on top of each other. As many as you have brains for each phase of the fight... or pieces of dissolve. Put a mag switch on a block of wood and put that on top of the blocks of dissolve. Then put a mag key on a block of wood UNDER the blocks of dissolve. So if you have 3 brains to hit in the first phase of the fight, you should have this under your level out of sight

[wood]<mag switch
[disolv]
[disolv]
[disolv]
[wood]<mag key

Set the radius so the blocks of wood would have to be on top of each other to trigger the mag switch. Now attach the one time switches from next to each of the 3 brains to the dissolve blocks, one each. So when you hit the brains, one block will dissolve, until all 3 are hit - and then all 3 dissolve blocks will be gone, and the wood blocks will be on top of each other. The output of the mag switches on the blocks can do anything you want, turn on more guns, turn on mouths and have the boss talk trash, set them to direction and you can even have the boss change size and shape with pistons and motor bolts to open it up or extend it out. The best part is - you can put 3 or 4 mag switches on the top wood block, and DO ALL OF THE ABOVE, have the boss say "So you think you're good? Watch this!! hahaha" and have his arms swing out (motor bolts with direction switch), legs extend (pistons with direction switch) Red eyes light up (any light turned to red with on/off switch), and more guns start firing (emitters with on/off switch)

So basically, in summary have a mag switch set to inverted, and a mag key within its radius on a part of the boss that dissolves or goes away like a brain bubble to turn the boss itself into a bunch of switches to get your desired results!

You can even put a mag switch with another color on the ground of the fight with its radius taking up the WHOLE screen, and set it inverted, put the mag key with coordinating color on the boss itself so when you kill the boss, the mag key goes away with it, turning on the inverted switch on the ground to trigger the final sequence - all that happy fun cool ending stuff you would want to see for killing the boss. or at least opening a door to let the player get to the scoreboard.

I really really, want to make a level with a boss in it. I have yet to try to create one. I'm setting up a goal wherein I try to at least make the most out of Create Mode (and thats by making abuncha stuff.) These tips are really handy, so thanks for sharing it with us! 2009-05-18 04:37:00
