[Guide] How to maximize plays and possibly get on Cool Levels.

Archive: 10 posts

It's really hard to get your level out there with all the crap getting on Cool Levels these days (yeah, there's also a lot of good levels on there but there's a lot that definitely shouldn't be there). Some of us are not going to stoop down to what some people are doing these days to get there (Level spamming, H4H, etc.) so here's a list with some tips of what I did to get my level on Cool Levels (a lot of the links are to threads on LBW, if there are any posts here of the same thing please post them):

0) Make a good level!
I made this 0 because its pretty obvious (or is it O.o).
Here are some links to tips for how to make a good level:
Jackofcourse's guide to creating (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=210043)
Tips posted on LBW:

1) Pay attention to the day you're publishing the level!
With the Cornish Yarg update out, you can now see how many people are online. To do this, you just go on your controller and hover over where it says community. To the left you should see how many people are online. *You can skip this part and go straight down till you see the stars again* I've been studying this a lot and from what I've seen, on the weekdays (M-T) there's usually somewhere from 7,000-9,000 people online (from 3pm-6pm US Eastern Time). On Fridays, I've seen it at like 12,000. I don't know if this is a glitch or something but on Saturdays it shoots up to about 98,000! Sundays sometimes the same thing. ** So my advice is publish on Saturdays when you see 98,000+ people playing.
2) Get a video for your level somewhere!
There's a bunch of people recording levels nowadays so if you really care about your level its not that hard to get one.
Here are links to some on this site:
Get your levels recorded in HD by Cog (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=10926)
Vanemiera's video capturing service (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=9552)
3) Promote promote promote!
How will people know about your level if you don't talk about it? The best way to promote your level is to take some pictures of your level and posting them in a thread in the Level Showcase.
Here (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=10692) are some guidelines to getting the most out of your level showcase.

Also, this isn't the only site out there so here are some links to some of the best sites I've posted on and got some great feedback:
LittleBigWorkshop.com (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com)
LittleBigLand.com (http://www.littlebigland.com/forum/)
LBP EU Forums (http://community.eu.playstation.com/playstationeu/?category.id=c_EN_LBP)
LBP board on gamefaqs.com (http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/gentopic.php?board=938583)
4) Ask for a bunch of reviews!
Obviously you need to hear what the community thinks of your level. If there's something that needs to be addressed, sometimes its hard to notice some things that are wrong with your level as the author since you've worked on it so much. That's where the reviewers come in. There aren't much active review groups on this site anymore but if you go to the sites in step 3, there are many of them. Here's one from this site:
Bridget reviews stuff! (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=11482)

Hopefully we see review groups back on this site some day.
5) Use the new republishing trick!
Ok, its not ideal but I've managed to get a lot of plays from it. Before, you could just move the level to a new spot and it counts as a republish. After the change to Cool Levels, we have to go through more steps. Now you have to copy your level to your moon (if you don't already have it there), go to edit mode, make any change to your level (I really mean any, you can just put a little bit of dark matter somewhere you can't see it), and republish it right over the level.
Note: If its been 7 days after you first published your level, it won't make it to Cool Levels for long (it will show up there for a few minutes but it'll disappear after those few minutes) but you still get plays. If you do it before the 7 days end, you should have a better chance of getting on Cool Levels since your getting more plays/hearts.
If these tips actually help you get on Cool Levels (if you see your level on Cool Levels with a red glow around it, it doesn't mean your on it) then it might be good to know I've noticed when your icon appears small it means your level just got on that page of Cool Levels and if its big that means its close to getting on the next page.

Hope someone finds this guide helpful . Again, if there are any threads similar to the ones I've linked to on LBW here, post them.

Thanks! I just published my Crazy Train WIP (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=205523#post205523) a few days ago and it's on page 6 and has 600 plays so far.
EDIT: page 3 and 1,100 plays. XD

Just a note on this.... I've done quite a bit of experimenting, and yes.... saturdays and sundays have a ton of people playing, but there are also a TON of spam h4h, trophy, and bomb levels being mass published on these days, so I've actually had an easier time getting plays by publishing on weekdays, and if you get your level up to the top of cool pages by the weekend you seem to get a ton more.

There may be differing circumstances, but that's what I've found personally.

The republishing trick doesn't really work for me, but that's okay all my other levels got played without much trickery, too.

Edit: Or maybe it does. ^.^

Added Jackofcourse's guide to creating (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=p=210043) to Step 0. It's a GREAT guide that even the most experienced creators should read.2009-05-24 08:12:00

Oh no, my 7 days are already over with my level (see signature)...

I really want it on the first page of Cool Levels... That's just too bad.
