Little things/tricks some don't know.

Archive: 36 posts

Delete stickers with the Sticker Edit Tool:
When someone wants to delete a sticker, they usually select the sticker with X and then press O to delete it. After taking off many stickers I got annoyed and thought it would be easier if you could just press triangle to delete them and turns out you can :|.
When there's a sticker you want to delete, just take out your Sticker Edit Tool, and press triangle on the sticker and it will delete.

Optimize display settings:
Pause when your in the game, press settings, display settings and where it says screen size you press and hold left until its all the way left.
With an HDTV and HDMI cable plugged in, you should see a black box around the screen (if you don't then you don't have to do anything else) now press right until the box is completely gone.
The game looks way better when the screen size is correct.

"Try again" trick:
When you press and hold Try Again your SackBoy begins to explode, just before he is about to explode press start and he will stay in that position until you press O or until you keep holding X. While your SackBoy is in this state, someone else can move you around and if you get slapped nothing happens to you.
Note: You can only do this as first player because you need to pause to be able to do it. If you're online with someone they can also do it if they are first player on their console.

How to upload pictures onto levels:
I know most of you know this but there has been many times that I have had to answer this question before so...
Step 1. Take a picture in the level you want it in.
Step 2. Open your pop-it and select stickers and decorations.
Step 3. Find the picture you took, press square, and then upload.
Note: Make sure your in the level you want the picture in when you press upload.

How to download an attachment if it is sent when your offline:
Pause the game and scroll down until you see LBP messages.
Click on it and it should show all the messages you have received with LBP attachments (unless you deleted them).
Click on the message, click on the attachment, and it should start downloading.

Glowing stickers when under lights (Submitted by Buff_Hamster):
Take a small LED Light, change it to whatever color you want, increase the LED light in size and take a picture of only the light portion of the LED light. This yields a color sticker so vibrant, that when placed on sackboy, he'll glow under most lights.

Post Cornish Yarg tricks:
How to use "SackBoy Edit Mode"- When you're in a level or in your create moon (not in your pod), just choose the sticker/decoration you want and press L1 to rotate him left or R1 to rotate right. When doing this, SackBoy stands still making it much easier to customize him.
How to use the music player-Pause the game, go to settings, and choose music player.

Delete many things at once (Submitted by jackofcourse):
If you are wanting to delete many things that are attached to each other, instead of pressing triangle to detach an item and then triangle again to delete it and having to do that for separately for every one, if you just hold triangle they all get deleted in one go.

Added on 6.7-More deleting tips (Submitted by RickRock_777):
Place your cursor at a point just above and to the left, or right, of a group of unattached objects that you want to delete. Press and hold down the "X" and draw a select box around all of the objects. This will select every object that is fully encompassed within the box. Now press "Triangle" and all the objects will be deleted. You can also press L3 to copy all of the objects, rather than delete them.

Notes: This technique works best with Grid On. And start the draw by holding "X" and moving the cursor straight down before moving the cursor to the left or right. This prevents the select box from shifting to the right or left when the view begins to Pan.

Trick to make stickers/colors/materials darker:
Just place a Shadow Circle sticker on anything you want to make darker. This can be found in the Realistic section in the Stickers/Decorations part of the pop-it.
I think you can do this same thing with the black gradient sticker but I find it easier to do with the Shadow Circle.
You can use this trick on your costumes but be careful as your costume can only take so much stickers on each piece of clothing (I think 4-5 on each piece, I'm not sure.)

Added on 5.17-Glue things that are in different layers (Submitted by Killian):
One useful thing that many don't know is that you can glue objects that are on different layers. If you have an object behind a layer that you want to glue to a layer in front of it, hold L1 and then hold X to glue it. If you have an object in front of a layer that you want to glue to a layer in back, hold R1 and then hold X to glue it.

Added on 6.7-More gluing tips (Submitted by Pitcard):
You can press an object in the direction of another to glue it to that object. Its very handy to know if an object is surrounded by a couple of others, but you only want to glue it to the object to the right of it (for example), you'll know what objects will be glued because they will be highlighted.

Use the grid in Create Mode (Submitted by dawesbr):
You can use a grid to make all your creations/levels neater. Just pause the game and you should see an option to choose Small, Medium, or Large grid. This can be used to rotate things 90 degrees too.

Added on 5.18-Glueing trick (Submitted by Miglioshin):
When you want to cover something with a thin (or also a thick) layer glued to it, but there are part that have still to be moving, it is enough to glue a little square (I usually do 2x2) to it (where there's safe space to glue it) and THEN expand the shape 'overwriting' it (and not with the corner edit tool, that becomes unavailble, you can still select it but it doesn't work with glued shapes), the new shape will be glued only in the original spot, but will behave like if it's glued to the entire structure also letting the moving parts still move!

More info:

To explain better; let's think to a whel inside a square; we want to cover the square with a thin (or thick) layer glueing them togheter but we need the wheel still to rotate.
Let's glue a smaller square to the border of the big square and then overwrite the shape to match the one we want to cover.
They are glued togheter but the internal wheel will rotate (opposite than if we had glued the entire shape).

This trick works also in an interesting way.
If you expand the square in (i.e.) a long horizontal line and then you split it vertically (or again horizontally), each of the two lines will stay glued in spite of the cutted parts!!!

Also be careful on how you merge shapes (if you will do it for some reason), anything attached on the shape that is absorbed will vanish (cameras, switches or anything else including decorations and stickers)
Create mode tips (Submitted by Entity):
Want to move an object somewhere else, but there's another object blocking where you want to move it to? Clone the object you want to move by pressing L3. The cloned object at the end of your popit should be able to pass through anything.

Also, I'm sure not many people know you can clone objects with L3, and mirror them with R3.

Added on 6.7-Trick to make testing levels easier:
Want to test a part of your level but don't want to play through the whole thing to get there? Well all you have to do is place an entrance where the part is that you want to test and delete your entrance in the beginning. If you have decorations and things on it just make sure to capture it first.

Added on 6.17-Another testing level tip (Submitted by Deftmute):
Pause then unpause time, then go to the area you want to test and play it right in Edit Mode. When you hit undo, it takes you back to when you paused time.

Added on 6.7-Invite friends without having to go to their levels:
When people invite me into their pods, I see that a lot of them do it by going to where it shows my levels. Well there's an quicker way to do it, all you have to do is press start, friends and it shows all your friends that are online and an option to invite or join them.

Added on 6.8-Sort things in the Pop-it:
It seems like a lot of people don't know that this is possible. To sort items in the pop-it just go to the area that you want to sort (costumes, stickers/decorations, materials etc.) and press R1. There you will see the options you can sort by. The options you can sort by are newest (In the order you got the item in, not always correct), Category (which is the default way it is sorted), and by Theme (Monster Kit, Buzz, Heavenly Sword etc.).

Added on 6.12-Simple counting mechanism:
Why waste time with all this complex logic to make counting mechanisms? All you have to do is get a paintball (If you have the MGS pack, just go to create mode, put a paintanator in the level, pause the game, shoot a paintball in the air, and capture it. If you don't have MGS, find a level that gives out a paintball, try searching for "paintball" or something like that) then you make a box with a hole in the middle, set an emitter at the top of the box so that it shoots the paintball into the box, connect whatever switch (whether it be sticker switches for sticker enemies or grab switches for lock combinations) you want to the emitter (set to one-shot), put a paintinator switch on the box somewhere and tweak it to how many times you want it to count.

Added on 6.17-Make creature brains & other objects smaller (Submitted by Gilgamesh):
When you shrink creature brains, two-way switches, spikes and the like, the game doesn't allow you to make them very small. If you tilt the object at a 45 degree angle, you are suddenly allowed to shrink the object much further than if the object was placed vertical or horizontal.
Also, to make creature brains and rocket smaller they have to be in the air. The game doesn't allow you to shrink them if you hover them over things.

Added on 6.25-Stickering tip for Create Mode:
One of the annoying things about Create Mode is that when you try to make a sticker too big it zooms out the camera and then you can't place it. To stop this from happening, turn on the grid and when you make the sticker big it makes the camera zoom out but not far enough that it doesn't let you place the sticker.
-------------------------------------------------------------
A lot of you know all of these things but I added most of them because I was asked how to do them by some people so I'm thinking there's some that aren't so well-known. That's all I got for now but I will keep this list updated. Feel free to post anything you think I should add.

Killian's thing also applies to objects in front, in case anyone didn't realise.

You should probably mention the grid too - a lot of creators don't know about this!

Oh yeah, forgot about that. Adding it to the list!

Dawes what do you mean about the grid? Like some don't know how to get to it?

And i'm surprised that many people didn't know a lot of stuff in the list actually,

This trick was ALWAYS there - way before CY patch. I was doing this back in January.

But I didn't know about the sticker deletion shortcut - that's awesome to know. Great post brnx.

Maybe you could add the fact that you can press an object in the direction of another to glue it to that object. I think most people know this, but it'd be a good tip for beginners. Its pretty much the same principle as pressing L1/L2 when gluing.

brnxblze, here is another delete trick for deleting multiple objects at the same time that are not attached to each other.

Nice man. There was a couple in there I didn't know. I'm always surprised when people don't know about/use the grid. I learned the hard way. But it does make life alot easier. I'm almost finished my first full level and there's no way I could have done it without it.2009-06-08 01:19:00

A trick i use to test sections of my levels.
Pause then unpause time, then run through in edit mode.
then hit undo and it takes you back to when you paused time.
I dont know if that counts as a trick actually.

Here's one I use which is a pretty peculiar trick.

Make creature brains & other objects smaller
When you shrink creature brains, two-way switches, spikes and the like, the game doesn't allow you to make them very small. If you tilt the object at a 45 degree angle, you are suddenly allowed to shrink the object much further than if the object was placed vertical or horizontal.

I know this trick works with Creature brains, Two-Way and Three-Way switches, Button switches and Spikes.

Heres one some people might not know, if you glue two thicklayers together the thin layer between them can still be used. Basically anything on the thin layer will slide right through.2009-06-26 01:41:00

also if you have a connector attached to an object like a rod, you can grab the end object connected to the end of the connector with your popit, change to grid, and move that part out of the way, and when your done you let go of it, unpause, and it snaps back to its original length.2011-01-14 03:16:00
