To the Creators

Dear Creators,

Please stop the madness. You're driving me crazy. I refuse to play any level on Cool Levels because all of their titles are spelled horribly noobishly. Here's how you make a title of a level:

"The Adventures of Barnacle Boy"

The first letter is always capitalized. Then, all important and long words are capitalized, while short letters like "of" and "and" are usually left lower case, but capitalizing them is still acceptable. Please, it's not difficult. If you don't know how to spell, go back to the 4th grade. Come back, and give your level the love and spelling it deserves. All you have to do is press R2. It's really not that hard. All it does to you is make your level look like it was made by a second grader.

Thanks!

~Cap'n 'Rog.

feelin' a little frustrated?

I know what you mean though. Silverleon's right - some of it is younger creators, some of it is spillover from a text happy culture that doesn't have a problem using shorthand or acronyms for just about everything. I'm waiting to see acronyms start showing up on resumes and job applications - that aught to be just great *sarcasm*

I just heard/saw a funny thing about a guy who used acronmys (ROFL, LOL, OMG, etc...) too much on a forum. A guy made a little pic that said AAAAA "American Association Against Acronym Abuse" - thought it was REALLY funny!

Ugh... Chatspeak. One of the many banes of my existence...

Anyway, here are my answers to your quiz.

1. "bowzers lair" = "Bowser's Lair"

2. "the Clocks Of Zor" = "The Clocks of Zor"

3. "teh ghostz are in your fingernails" = "The Ghosts are in your Fingernails" or "The Ghosts Are In Your Fingernails" (couldn't decide which looked better.)

4. "Prize Level!!!!! 435 items plus Paintinator!" = "Prize Level! 435 Items Plus Paintinator!" or "Prize Level - 435 Items Plus Paintinator"

Correction, SFC, "Prize Level!!!!! 435 items plus Paintinator!" should be "Don't Play This Level, Whatever You do!"

I'm afeared I have to agree with you, AM. It is a game for kids, though, after all.

It's a game for kids, sure, but I'm sure that kids take grammar and spelling classes in school.

Erm.. I really don't know what to say to this post.
The old phrase "don't judge a book by its cover comes to mind"... xD
Sure it might be annoying, but how is it the creator's fault, and what is your suggestion to improve it?

I feel the same way. If you can afford a PS3, I'm pretty sure you can afford basic education.

l33t sp34k has absolutely nothing to do with not having a basic education, it is a choice.

Poor grammar / spelling etc. on the other hand is a rather different issue. A basic education, at least in the UK, will teach you very little formal grammar and punctuation, it's mostly just implicated through general reading and writing skills. A lot of people I went to high school with will be stumped by the question "what's a preposition?", to the point that they may not even recognise the word. Couple this with the fact that many adults end up in jobs where their spelling is never an issue, due to no writing / or software spellchecks, and what they did know gradually gets lost. Hence the ubiquitous misuse of apostrophes ("banana's ?3", "theres a dog with it's ball", etc.), homophones (there vs their vs they're) etc. That's without taking apathy into consideration.

Have you played my 7-year-olds level "volcaNo journey"?

You know... when you actually HAVE a child and see how challenging it is for them to work the controller AND keep in mind the whole upper/lower case thing.... you tend to get a little more forgiving of the spelling.

They censor "computer"?

That explains what happened on my "Game of Life" level... Why would they do that?

they would have censored that statement too... Happened is a cuss word as well. ^_^ So is "opened"

and Ccubbage, have your son make that fingernail ghost level for me. I'm sure it will be fantastic! ^_^

is it just me or is everyone blaming young people for everything?

It's getting seriously annoying. There was a topic a few days ago and people were complaining that young people made H4H and trophy levels. You have no proof of this. You don't know their ages so stop generalizing and making assumptions.

I'm 14. I don't spell like an idiot, i don't go begging people for hearts and i don't go making stupid trophy levels. [/rant]

and yeah i agree people should know/learn how to spell.

I have to agree with you there. It's annoying to see so many levels where the title and description is in poor grammar. I'm actually more likely to play a level if the title and description is spelt correctly/has good grammar.2009-05-18 17:08:00

I tend to gravitate to levels with bad spelling, actually. I know that sounds silly, but chances are that it's a child that has made the level, and I tend to have a very good time playing levels made by 7 year olds. I love seeing the creativity of children sometimes! (i know I've mentioned "the death punch" many many times, but that level is just HILARIOUS!)

Remember, please, that people of all ages can play this game, and if a three year old names his level "teh ghosteez wearz my underpantz and DanCE with Chyckens wearing 1337 bikiniS", then so be it. Frankly, I'd be more impressed that a 3 year old made a level, than to pick apart grammatical problems.

I do understand the frustration with people who are "serious creators" who make tons of spelling errors and stuff... but remember... not everyone has the same educational upbringing, and not everyone had an english teacher for a mother (I did, and she was a tyrant about that sort of thing). Also, there are people out there that don't speak english as perfectly as someone else, yet they try to make a level in english, (which is impressive, btw) and perhaps don't understand all the rules of the language.

anyway, that's my two cents ,and I'm nobody.

I'm not saying it's all younger creators doing this - don't misunderstand. There are plenty of adults out there (myself included) who have trouble spelling. I'm just saying that statistically speaking a 9 year old is going to have many more issues with spelling and grammar than a 19 year old. I'm sure there are plenty of young creators out there who could school me in spelling but I try to use spell check or reference something if I can't spell it correctly on my own.

LOL should probably be all in capitals, what with it being an acronym Is anyone else double-checking their posts before submitting here now?

Also, @Don Vhalt, I think when people are saying "younger players" when referring to this game, they mean a fair bit younger than you. For both the H4H and the 1337. Whilst I'm sure no-one has done a statistical analysis, both of these can be classed as immature behaviour and I tihnk it's reasonable to assume that the sub-10 year olds playing the game are more likely to be acting this way than the adults and teenagers. It's not an attempt to tar everyone under the age of 18 with the same brush and we are all aware of how many intelligent teenagers there are frequenting this forum and playing the game.
