HALP! Creators Block

Archive: 10 posts

I saw some older threads concerning this, but nothing close to recent. My apologies if I missed one.

I desperatly want to create my own level. Yet I cannot gather any ideas! Ham tells me "just start with something, and the ideas will flow" I got nowhere to start!

I want to join the ranks of the LBPC creators, but IDK where to start... I was thinking of making an exclusive 2p-4p co-op level. But ham agian, tells me "you want to make a level thats good to play with any number of players, and have special sections for multiples like story". Ack! back to the drawing board...

I think I may attempt to make a level inspired by the mall im working at. IDK its not a great idea... but its somethin.

The only real starting advice is to slaughter mank- uh.. i mean, do something that interests you...

There's no point making a level if you don't like the idea you are making. So, what? Do you like World War II (yes, yes I suggested you like the deadliest war ever >_<). Well, you could make a level where Sackboy has a paintinator and... eh, that may be too "historic", if you know what I mean :/.

Anyway, what DO you like? Throw a few themes out there you like- Wild West, Future, Fantastical Fun? I can't help you until you give us an idea of what interests you.

try making a complex level, where you control nemo in 2D (jetpack behind layer with you in a circle) and nemo on the foreground, so you basically control him.
then at the end have a shark chase you.

source: your sig.

my point is, look at things close to you.

Fallout
WoW
LBP (duh lol)
Halo
Rock Band
MGS

Non game interests

Politics (war, economy)
Physcidelic movies (the wall, the doors)
Physcidelic music (tool, pink floyd, rush)
Airsoft/Paintball

Maybe a good fantasy D&D type level ala WoW. I haven't seen near enough of these in LBP.2009-05-17 00:27:00

I'm thinking of making a Secrets of Ulduar themed level (Ulduar interior/decorations) with some of the bosses featured (possible, at LEAST yogg saron or vezax). I think if done well it could be a beautiful fun level. You guys can be sure i'll keep you posted and will be looking for testers. 2009-05-17 00:41:00

I'd say (If you stil can't think of what to do) think of themes (Game, sereis, An element, realistic, fantasy, etc.) Next think the difficulty you want, if you want o make it eye cando or pure challenge design.
Also helps if you start creating some weird objects and give them form little by little, then think of ways of "extending' it.
Does that help?

ok - I love Nemo but I can't deal with sharks so there - I've said it.

I saw in your post you like The Wall from Pink Floyd. That would make an awesome level! I'm picturing the marching hammers - tons of platforming challenges you could do as a variation on that. Plus for the background you can make it super easy with blocks of "the wall." The trick would be to get them the right proportions to sackboy without being too massive. Check out Coxy224's Pyramid Puzzle level for a really good size comparison for blocks.

You could also do the meat grinder from The Wall too but be careful not to get yourself moderated. Nothing too graphic or you'll get grief'd in no time flat.

For other ways to express the music in the level play that Gothic Reverie level we spotlighted in Spotlight 12. It's visual representations of music by The Cure. Really great level.

If The Wall isn't something you really want to do - find something else you are passionate about or have an interest in building in LBP, like vehicles or puzzles or landscapes and just base a level around that.

Good Luck - keep us posted what you decide!

I started cracking on my WoW Yoggsaron/Ulduar themed level last night... turns out its gonna be ALOT more compliacted than I think I have the skills to tackle.

Such as making a tank, making the lil nemo contraption, a working challenging yogg saron... i've got alot of ideas but they seem pretty complicated, hopefully i can twist hams arm into schoolin me!

I love your wall idea morgana, and i think i will start working on that, as i can see it being a little easier to create.

I love the ideas guys! You've got my creative juices flowing and I've got enough ideas now to create a few levels and keep me occupied for a while! I am still open to new ideas!

I totally ran into this problem myself recently and it's really difficult to break out. Looks like you have some ideas, and it's good to be passionate about a level you're creating.
I just constantly spend time in create mode creating anything that comes to mind. Look around you, see what's there and what you can improve on.
Good Luck
