Mountain Marathon (With pics!!:SPOTLIGHTED!!!!)

Archive: 40 posts

A race through mountainous terrain. Traverse a volcano, waterfall, and an ice cavern. Try to make it through with the best time. I concentrated mostly on aesthetics and platforming this time around. Give it a try, and let me know what you think.2009-05-16 18:16:00

K, i played through your level, and i think its a beautiful level that uses the lighting pretty good. i really liked the way you made your lava and your lighting effects inside the crystal cave.

There was only 1 thing that was quite a downfall for your level. I think the way you kill off your players are a bit too much in it. those red flames that sweep you are quite surprising and it doesnt give off any type of warning.

with that said your level really looks good i think you just need to tweak your settings up a bit and attach a text, warning people of the danger their up against.

4 stars and hectic.

good point about the dripping lava. I think that's what you were talking about. I'll put up some warning text. Those do blend in quite a bit. I did put in infinite checkpoints because there are some difficult parts. I don't want this to be a pushover, but I'll keep an open ear and see what the feedback brings in, so I can make appropriate changes. Thanks for the feedback.

The Dripping lava are fine the way they are. Its The Red Wind of Ultimate Gas Destruction. Its like ive been shot down by Gundam hiding somewhere.

I wasn't sure what your talking about, but now I think I may understand. I went in to do some fixes and I found what you are talking about. Now I fully understand your frustration.
There was a three layer thick gas cloud running around on my waterfall disc. I must have put it there on mistake. I'm sorry. all I can say is I screwed up. I'm fixing now.

Played this level an hour ago (got in a few games of Fifa before heading on here) and I was very impressed with the level.

Pros:
+Lovely design
+The fact it was a race added to competitivness
+Nicely placed checkpoints
+Clever ideas
+The lava was good
+Mini boss was (mainly) very good and well designed

Cons:
-I felt that a little longer was needed on the clock (I'm not sure whether you've got it at maximum, but a few more seconds would go a long way).
-When the boss jumps on top of you, I felt it was difficult to move out of the way so I died a lot there.

Overall though I liked the challenge it posed and rated it 4 stars and hearted it

Thanks for the feedback. I can add more to the clock. I don't want people to totally run out of time. The mini boss Is difficult to dodge, but it can be done. If you move to the front layer when you see it start to move, and run at it you'll probably miss it. Although you still have to be quick. When I play it I die a lot on that part too. I struggle on making any kind of boss, because I always tend to make everything too hard. If I get enough complaints I can make the boss fight optional. Thanks again.

I think you should keep the boss fight, it's pretty original and fun - just a little difficult. That's countered though by the fact you have unlimited lives. It just takes some getting used to.
Also, I'd say about 10-20 extra seconds to finish it, that's how far behind I usually was

I really liked this level! I rated it 4 stars and hearted it as well. I really liked the lighting and atmosphere with the fire and the waterfall. I also like the strict platforming, I need to focus on that in my levels.

Here's a question though, during the fire area after you jumped over the lava, then you had to jump onto a platform that was attached to a wobble bolt. How did you get the platform to stay level all the time? I've tried to do that but I can't figure it out.

Overall, great level! I'd appreciate it if you could try my levels. It's a series of 5 levels: Chocobo's Dungeon - Dungeon of Fire v2, there's a post for it. You don't have to though.

Nice lighting on this one! ..a bit tricky, but a nice challenge. ...though I should try it again when I am not half asleep and ready for bed! I thought the mini boss was pretty cool, but for some reason never thought to step forward and died every time it attacked. ...though I was giggling the entire time as that thing just goes right at you! I wouldn't make it optional. If anything maybe just a tad slower on it swooping in on you. ..though again, I am half asleep and probably shouldn't even comment.

I did have a bit of trouble on the first part of the waterfall as for some reason the last block before the grab switch pulley, I kept thinking that was just a thin layer blocking the view to my feet and kept having to repeat that. ..again, my eyes are quite gone at this point!!

Pro's - Great lighting
- Cool effects with the lava and the waterfall.
- Really challenging level that is addicting and makes you determined to finish.

Cons - Maybe a bit slower boss on attack phase, though it really might be fine as it is since I see you posted there is a way to avoid it.
Possibly a bit longer on the clock unless you already added time.
Might be a bit frustrating to an average player.

Challenging, fun, and great lighting effects.

4 starts and hearted. Really nice work! Congrats!

I say, time how fast you can do it, getting all the secrets, and x by 1.5 at least. You want most people to finish, but the best to be rewarded by a good time.2009-05-18 06:20:00

I have added an extra minute since I made this, but I can always add more. Just need more opinions.

Your level was fun! Classic platforming.

A lot of your lighting looks very nice. The lava looks great at the beginning. I also like the blue crystal cave at the end. Your boss is very similar to something I was considering doing, haha! You beat me to it!

I do have a couple suggestions. 1st, the boss bounce attack doesn't really give you enough time to react to it. An easy fix (which would also add to level, I think) would be to add a warning sound of some kind before he does that particular attack. Have him make a noise, wait 10 seconds?, and then bounce at you. That would give players a chance to prepare (if they're paying attention.. ).

Also, the 1st time I played the level, I got stuck. I killed the boss, and grabbed the rope. But the rope got stuck on something and broke... leaving me stuck.

Those are minor fixes though. I have no big complaints at all. Good job!

Just played the level Smasher.

+ I liked the lava effect, it looked really authentic and the lighting was spot on.
+ The platforming here was taxing, but never fustrating, perfectly balanced.
+ Liked the skull section, and how the floor opened, it was well hidden and I was'nt expecting it.
+ Waterfall looked amazing and was huge, it felt very epic
+ Some of the platforming sections are hard, but very well thoughtout
+ Loved how the level went through different sections

- Infinite life checkpoints sort of ruin the challenge, maybe you should have a seperate hard mode level? Getting to the end would sort the good players out from the bad
- The boss's dive attack was very hard to avoid.

A good, but hard level, I was a second off hitting the end race gate

**** and perilous.

You know. At first I didn't have infinite check points. I agree with you about having them ruins the challenge. So. I think I will put in a difficulty selection. Shouldn't be too hard. Might take me a bit though. AS for the boss I think I'm going to try ( I think it was drunkenfists) idea about the warning sound. Thanks for the feedback.

Updated today. Put in your choice of checkpoints Infinite, or double life, or Just the three permanent ones. The boss still has infinite. Also added a growl about three seconds before the boss strike. Still a bit dodgy though as the boss takes a couple of swipes before he gets into his pattern. He attacks more frequently at the start, so the sound doesn't work real good till he gets into his pattern. I think I found the hangup where the hook can break, and I fixed.2009-05-19 02:45:00

Pretty good, very challenging. I like all the effects, nice job on those. The aurora-crystal cavern was my favorite.

If you stand just to the right of the boss when it's on the left side, it can't hit you. But getting there is next to impossible with the instant-kill attack it has

AAAAAAAAAAaaah, okay, after entering (and forgetting) your PSN six times I finally found you, and your level.

I'm really pleased with the replay value it has to offer. It's a great idea allowing the player to set the difficulty with the number/type of checkpoints in the level, so for the first attempt I tried the double-life checkpoint.

...And it was bloody hard.

Really, it was. I started off at a good and steady pace, but then the boss arrived and I swear I died a grand total of 17 times trying to kill it. Ow! It was still fun though (did you use a P.T.D?), it's just impossible to avoid its lightning-fast plunge attack...Thing.

Swiftly moving on...I loved the transition from the fire stage to the aqua stage, brilliantly done and so was the waterfall. It was a little trickier this time around, especially on the "Bad" mode where it eventually got tedious starting again from the checkpoint all the way back from the previous stage. Even so, it was a bigger challenge, so off I went jumping around and hopping from platform to platform.

The white clouds were really annoying...

...Sorry, had to be said, but the next part was awesome.

Cool blue skies, jagged rocky platforms and deadly crystals? Epic! I loved the gameplay in this one, you just had to keep your pace and make your timings perfect, and I liked that. This one was my favourite of all the stages, as you can possibly tell.

Overall, really enjoyed it. You have made yet another fun level, with great replay value and a large challenge to follow it. Five stars and a heart, and by the way, ignore the "Rubbish" tag. Kids can't tolerate anything which may involve a bit of effort, nor can they tolerate anything which has had a lot of effort put into it.

I'm sorry about the boss everybody, but when I was building it I was laughing the whole time, because I just knew it was gonna take a lot of poor little innocent sackboy lives. If it's any consolation to anyone I die just as much as everyone else on that part, and frankly I laugh the whole time. I guess it's just my weird sense of humor. sorry.2009-05-20 01:28:00

Welp.. I found it pretty funny also.. sorta like "ok.. there he is there he is WHAM!!" After awhile, I was giggling so hard I couldn't even get a shot off. Took me forever to beat that thing...

Of course you could just add the Task Fail music to it every time he squishes you.

Ok, I just played this one... man, I REALLY like this level.

I think the lava effects are the best I've seen. There are several creators that have done lava... I think they need to take a look at what you've done here. I actually BELIEVED it was flowing.

Fantastic lighting effects everywhere.

One of the things I really appreciated about this level, and I think it's another thing that in general creators of difficult levels should take a cue from, is that I NEVER felt the jumping or platforming was cheap. That's something I'm always concerned about... does the author know how to create challenging platforming without making you balance on the tip of a pin, so to say. But you pulled it off brilliantly.

With the "bubble" boss at FIRST I thought it was cheap until I payed attention to exactly what he was doing and figured it out. Then, I thought "wow... that's VERY cool". Nice job.

Once suggestion on the bubble boss... I thought the end of the battle and dropping the rope was way to abrupt. I wanted to see him blow up, or dissolve, or SOMETHING. Maybe there's enought thermo to do a tiny bit more with this....

Great job, 5 stars and a heart!

I played your level tonight and I loved it. You have some real nice effects in there, some i've never seen before. I love how you made your lava and i'm not even sure how you did the background. All I know is that it's awesome.

The environnement change is a good idea. It keep the level fresh, especially when it's not making history in matter of gameplay/platforming.

You waterfall look really and I like the general lighting of the level. You have also this little spiky style to your platforms that just compliment your overall look and help your level feeling unique.

Lastly I think it's really nice to have a difficulty choice at the beginning. This is something not many people are thinking about yet it's so convenient. I was wondering is something else than the checkpoint changed according to the difficulty? Anyways I'll go back to it and check for myself, i'm always replaying the level I'm hearting!

One thing I wasn't a big fan of is the cloud part. There's nothing particularily interesting about it and I thought some cheap deaths were easy to come by. It doesn't destroy the level at all or distract too much don't worry.

5 stars buddy!

Thanks for the feedback. Glad you liked the level. About the cloud part. It's a necessary section. I could change the platforming a bit, But I think it's kind of fun. If you take it slow it's not too hard. Also I've taken ccubbages suggestion, and made the boss death slightly more dramatic. Now you see it dissolve, and it cries a final fading death growl. Thanks for the suggestion ccubbage.

I played this one through another couple of times and finally got a half decent score.
I really do not like the bosses "stamp on your head" type move - you just don't get enough time to move. You hear it coming, so you move, but then he goes to the position you're standing in. As he is also quite large - he generally killed me everytime he did it.
It didn't matter too much with the unlimited lives and all, but it can be frustrating

??? I use the paintinator for the boss and you only change layers to dodge him. I thought it was really nice. OR did I miss something? another boss? or it's different in higher difficulties?

You got it right. Just switch to the front layer, and move towards it. It's front part is smaller than the back part, so if you switch to the front it's a lot easier to dodge.

This level is absolutely absurdly excellent. I love the visuals every step of the way, some effects I really didn't know were possible. Just when I thought it was over the waterfall swept me off my feet. Some great challenges too.

The problem is, some of it is blisteringly difficult the first time through. It is a good thing you offer infinite lives, I think maybe it should be a recommendation. Maybe a little more in the description mentioning this, although I guess that could turn some off. It seems you've had a quite a bit of attention and hearts already though.

The first oddity is with the swinging elevator right at the beginning. If you jump using the momentum when it reaches the top, you die from gas. Not sure if intended.

The second is after the boss (which by the way is an awesome boss), with multiple players, goofing off is a no-no, as the rope will break and you will be stuck.

With the second grabbable lift in the waterfall (the round sponge), it was hard to figure out that it was where I needed to go for some reason. It seemed obvious when I got there, but I just kept falling before hand and thought for some reason that I wasn't supposed to jump up there.

Also, near then end, on the moving platforms dark and light blue, floating over and under gas, it was difficult to tell where the danger was, and that I needed to grab the sponge swings.

Really though, this level is excellent, I could understand you wanting to keep all of the things I mentioned as is if that is what you were intending.

5 stars.

Hi smasher1116789. I just got a chance to play your level tonight, and I can say your ID is fitting . I'm already thinking of a level to create that I will only allow you to play in my Pod--sweet revenge awaits you. Just kidding.

Now for some feedback.
What I liked: I thoroughly enjoyed Mountain Marathon. This level had some awesome platforming, and the race aspect made it even better, especially for those who enjoy the "difficult challenges", like me. I was immediately immersed into your level with the first series of platforms, and it just got better from there. Your technique for moving the player in all directions was executed very well. I loathe your glowing sun-like globe that crushed me a few times, but in the end it was no match for my superb paintinator skills (nice try). The rock platforms at the waterfall had enough jagged edges to be forgiving of some of my poor attempts at jumping, which made me feel like I was doing better than I actually was (thanks for the temporary ego fest ). Very nice touch with the crystals and the moving platform at the bottom of the cavern. Kinda reminded me of some Mm play, but with a bit more treachery. I got 13th place in single player, so I must...go...back...for...more...punishment. The replay value for this level is very good.

I hearted and rated this level a 4+, so I had no problems with giving you 5-Stars to help towards getting your rating where it should be, which is at least a 4.

The Darker Side: After eliminating the sun-like glowing globe, I grabbed the winch and got crushed on the way up. After a fight like that, and still beaming from a paintinator high, I really wanted to be rewarded with a fun ride to the bridge at the top. I would suggest making the area behind the thin layer rock in a funnel shape, for a safe ride out.

I recommend everyone play this level.

I'm glad you enjoyed it! Yeah, I love to punish people. Unfortunately most people playing lbp don't like being punished, hence my 3 star, and rubbish tag.
Your anomaly with the rope I've never experienced yet. I don't think I could ever get it any smoother, as I've already redone that part twice. I'll take another look at it though. Thanks for the feedback.

Hey Smasher,

Great level and good challenge level. Had me wanting to finish. I realy liked the waterfall effect. and the opening atmosphere in the volcanoish area. I got one place where i had a suggestion. The part where you got the white platforms, the second platform that starts moving across when you land on it. I was jumping ahead of it to grab some points and it pulled back becuase i left the censor zone so i couldnt land back on it. I thought you could make the censor zone cover a little more area in the front of that platform so it doesnt pull back right away if you get a little bit infront of it. Also there was an invisible wall when you first try to jump on that platform (if you jump right away when the first one descends) and i felt that wall was a little unnessicary, asi t was my second time going through soi knew the first one would descend. So i ended up dieing again there becuase the invisible wall, and didnt really see the purpose of blocking the player from jumping earlier there. Oh yeah one other place was when you descend do the descent in the water fall part you have the decorations blocking the contour of the platform so i slipped off when i landed as i couldnt tell that it was sloped on the ends (not big deal as it looks good just was a bit steamed as i didnt expect to fall as i thought i was going to make the jump)

over all really good level great job

Thanks for the feedback. The part where you got ahead of the cloud I can fix. No prob. The part with the invisible wall. I didn't want people to just skip that first platform. Even if you already died once on it, It's not too hard to adjust the second time through. I tried to make a challenging level that wasn't TOO frustrating. Which brings me too the third issue with the foliage on the rocks by the waterfall. I would love to change everything that people have issues with, but I have a hard time, because I don't want my level to lose it's integrity. I really appreciate your unvarnished opinion though. Thanks again.

Hi smasher

Just played your Mountain Marathon, and here's my thoughts...

DISCLAIMER: I chose Infinite Lives because I didn't know how difficult it was going to be and I wanted to make sure I saw as much of the level as possible. Yeah, yeah, I'm a wuss!

This level is great. I mean really great fun. Whilst there are some bits that I found tricky, it was my timing rather than poor or evil design. There were clever bits too - the lava was a clever touch, and the lightning quick boss was a nasty so-and-so! The waterfall section and the crystal section were gorgeous to look at. My favourite bit of all (apart from seeing the finish line!) was the timed platform in the crystal section moving along the bottom, as I tried to swing and jump to keep up with it. Sublime timing! That must have taken some testing.

I ended up placed 16th on the scoreboard.

PROS
+ A tricky, but fair, challenge
+ Ingenuity coupled with urgency
+ Some great visuals
+ FUN

CONS
- Can't think of any, but I will try the level again by being 'big and hard and not grabbing anything' at the beginning!

OVERALL
I thoroughly enjoyed it, and I've recommended it to my friends.
Rated 4*, tagged with 'Brilliant' and hearted.

PS - Played your 'Fully Automated Machine' level too. Genius! (So I've hearted you too).

Cheers,
MrsSB

Really fun level. Totally the opposite of mine (yours is pure platformer while mine is almost pure puzzles).

The waterfall was amazing, and your overall use of lighting was really great. Arguably the best underwater effects I've seen yet. GREAT

Dunno why this took me so long to play, but hey ho.

It`s great. Really enjoyed it. One of the best levels I`ve played.

I chose the infinite lives. Personally I don`t think it ruins the challenge. Doesn`t make it easier to jump over the lava or anything. Just means you don`t have to start all over again, which is something I`m not keen on doing tbh. If I`d had normal checkpoints, or even double life, I think I would've run out at the cloud part. The feedback would`ve been up to that point too!

I had only 2 small complaints:

- On a few occasions the edge of the platform you`re standing on is obscured by the foreground. The very first jump you come to is an example of this. It happens a few times throughout the level. It can result in the odd rather unfair death.
- At the part just after the crystals where you`re on the platform that moves along and you have to swing on sponges and jump over some other stationary platforms, there is a patch of gas right in your path that`s practically invisible. Couldn`t help but feel that was a bit of a cheap death.

Overall, it`s a superb level. The cloud bit is a bit annoying, and the boss killing you may grate a little I suppose, but excellent level design, brilliant use of lighting and lava effects as well as a right good challenge more than make up for any flaws there may be.

5 stars, hearted and 'brilliant' tag.

Yeah, I love to punish people.
lol, that explain a lot!

just finished playing this one
+ good thing you warn people that this is a hard level and give them the choice between finite and infinite checkpoints (i would never have made the end without infinite checkpoints, you don't want to know how many times i've died)
+ level is really wel designed, good choice of materials and lightning, I especially like the lava/fire at the beginning.
+ waterfall, it's a nice and big one!
+ I was really happy to see the finish-line, gave a rewarding feeling that i've finally made it

- that boss is really hard man, can you actually dodge him?

gave it 1 star and an easy tag

just kidding

4 stars and difficult, I've enjoyed it although it was really hard

Yeah. You can dodge the boss. You just have to move to the front layer, and run at it. Sorry it's so difficult, I'm actually thinking of making an easier version, and republishing it, so more people can enjoy it. I'm taking a create break right now, so maybe I could redo this while I'm on my break. Thanks for the feedback.2009-06-19 23:18:00
