Forced Movement Sidescroller
Archive: 14 posts
New concept I came up with. The level itself forces you to keep moving to the right, or you'll die. Kind of like a few of the old SNES Super Mario World levels where if you stop running, you'll fall behind the screen and die. The device takes up two layers, so it also makes it a one layer side scroller, which I've been attempting to make for a while now, so I killed 2 birds with 1 stone! If you'd like to see it in action, check out my level "Forced Movement Sidescroller" (PSN DJLols). If you ace the level, you win the device that makes it work! Good luck! (It's possible, I've done every obstacle without dying individually) So here's some screenshots, although you can't see the level's full power in them, because for some reason you can't take pictures of poison gas... >> I had to take them in create mode, so there's a bit of a rod in some of the pictures, it's invisible on the actual device. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/LordToan/APhoto_17-1.jpgThere is actually black poison gas at the far left and right of this picture. Just to give you an idea of how much room you have. http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/LordToan/APhoto_16-1.jpg I make scenery!? O_O http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/LordToan/APhoto_15-1.jpgBadger badger badger MUSHROOM MUSHROOM http://i41.photobucket.com/albums/e288/LordToan/APhoto_14-1.jpg The level itself is slightly challenging, but not very long. It's timed perfectly with the song, it ends right before "Get It Together" breaks down into the "GO!" part. That'll be playing while you're at the scoreboard. So anyways, if you like the concept of this device, let me know, check out the level, and feel free to make your own levels with the device if you get it! | 2009-05-14 13:09:00 Author: DJLols Posts: 217 |
I thought about making something like this myself. But I didn't. Good job though, might check it out later. | 2009-05-14 14:55:00 Author: Chin Fish Posts: 32 |
WOAH AWESOME! got to try this now, *goes to ps3 and loads lbp* | 2009-05-14 15:14:00 Author: johnrulz77 Posts: 835 |
Sounds very interesting. I'm just trying to think how you did it. Will play this as soon as possible | 2009-05-14 17:21:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
I'll have a look when I get home. How are you handling deaths and respawns. In terms of the device, could it not be done with just a side on piston with some gas attached and a camera? | 2009-05-14 17:36:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
Sounds cool, but the music will mess up if you pause or press PS. | 2009-05-14 17:39:00 Author: ARD Posts: 4291 |
In terms of the device, could it not be done with just a side on piston with some gas attached and a camera? Yeah, someone on these forums did it that way. In my similar level I used a box of gas on wheels. Since I made a similar level I'm very curious to see yours but I'm in Hong Kong for a few more weeks Check out mine if you want though, it's the second one in my sig. | 2009-05-14 18:06:00 Author: Walter-Kovacs Posts: 542 |
I checked it out and it's pretty interesting. It's annoying that you can see the gas at the front and the back though. You may want to make the space in the middle a bit bigger so you can't see it | 2009-05-14 19:10:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
its a good concept, have you ever played the "Jumper Red Zone" and "Jumper Blue Zone" levels? they use the same concept and might help if you need an example | 2009-05-14 19:14:00 Author: redmagus Posts: 667 |
Just thinking about it, could you not use a camera that is set to not follow the player at all, and have that scroll along the bottom? That would kill you if you were off the screen for too long - and be a lot prettier aswell..... | 2009-05-14 19:24:00 Author: Coxy224 Posts: 2645 |
If the camera gets too far away to see you, regardless of the angle you've set it to, it moves to put you on the screen. As for the gas, I can space it out, yeah. The device is a glass box on wheels with pistons attached to it. There's a checkpoint floating over you so that if you die, you drop down wherever the level is at. | 2009-05-15 13:17:00 Author: DJLols Posts: 217 |
you can always detect when the player gets to the back of the screen and do a 1-shot emmit gas for 0.1s. you could even have it as little strips of gas so it's completely invisible. | 2009-05-15 13:25:00 Author: rtm223 Posts: 6497 |
for the camera have you adjusted the tracking bar all the way down? if not this should stop it from following the player as much | 2009-05-15 13:26:00 Author: redmagus Posts: 667 |
I did change tracking to 0. It still stays with you if you wander off screen. Can't kill yourself off camera on 1 player I guess. I love the emitter idea, thank you! Setting that up now! Re-published with your suggestions! Thank you all for your ideas, please let me know how you think I did implementing them! Does anyone have anything they want me to check out? ^_^ -finally has some free time- | 2009-05-15 13:37:00 Author: DJLols Posts: 217 |
