PC Editor

Archive: 20 posts

Well, now that plenty of time has passed since the release, I can bring out some of my gripes about LBP. One thing I really think LBP needed was a PC-based level editor. It could be as limited as the editor we have in the game, but if I were able to create the level in a photoshop-esque environment, I would've already made way more than a single level. I'm pretty sure I'm not alone in my opinion about this.

I gave it a try, I really wanted to like it, but I don't. Using an editor with a gamepad is not fun. Nor is it anywhere near as productive as a proper environment.

Granted it is difficult to use the gamepad at first, you quickly learn your way around things. I feel being able to do it on a PC editor would be a good addition though
I like it, but I'd still be quicker with a controller

Yes... well... I suggest you stick to PC based games then. Did you seriously think SONY would cater to YOUR needs as a PC based gamer!?

Get real!

I'm a MAC guy (which is far above and beyond PC where graphics or any entertainment media is concerned) and I certainly would NEVER expect ANY gaming console to CATER to my needs.

Wow. You don't have to be rude about it. e_e

In my opinion, there's a good reason there's no PC Editor for Little Big Planet. Because it's a PS3 exclusive. We can't have just everybody going on their computer and making LBP levels if they're not a PS3 owner (Or LBP Owner) who's actually part of the LBP community. They would have no idea what they were doing. The editor's in game for a reason. >>

I've often wondered why they didn't include mouse support with the PS3 version tbh. 2009-05-14 14:45:00

Mm has mentioned that they have a mouse/keyboard version of the LBP editor and preparing it as DLC shouldn't be too much work for them, but it's not high on their priority list. Still, I think the furthest they should go (if they do this at all) is mouse/keyboard support. Migrating the whole editor to the PC serves to alienate Creators more than assist them.2009-05-14 15:25:00

Thanks for that CC, I never realised how easy it would be for Mm to release as DLC.
Think of the creating you could get done at work though

Totally, that's great news! I have a Wacom tablet and pen that would be amazing to use it with LBP. 2009-05-14 16:36:00

I think that there should be maybe not a level editor for pc, but more of a level planner, in case there's people who cannot get to their ps3 for a while, but have a lot of ideas that they want to plan out before they forget or something...

But this would be a very specific group...

a level editor on pc would be great, but i don't think there isn't one because it's ps3 exclusive

the problems that i can see with a pc editor is that it'd probably be easy to hack your creations and do stuff that isn't supposed to be possible

You are absolutely right. Now that I've re-read my response, I realise that I posted at a bad time (was in a bit of a mood), and this came off sounding much more harsh than I had intended it to. I should have certainly used the italics instead of caps, which really pushed my response over the edge into "I sound like such a jerk right now" land.

This is certainly not representative of my usual responses or demeanor, and I would like to take this opportunity to apologize to Linque for coming off as a total jerk... as well as to the other members of the community.

My bad.

I didn't know this, that's great news that they're at least thinking about doing something like this! It's pretty obvious that MM themselves don't make their levels with the gamepad, so I'd wish I would have some options as well. Thanks for letting me know.

As for Rustbukkit, no problem. I don't really mind. You could try becoming a bit more neutral about platforms, though.

Thanks for understanding. Platforms... yes, perhaps I'm a little biased. I certainly can see the validity in creating with a tablet in the sense of speeding up and making the process more efficient. I guess I just view this platform as one dedicated to hardcore gamers, who don't necessarily possess the skills or knowledge of PC/Mac applications designed to build or create. I would have never thought Mm or SONY would even consider opening up this avenue to the average gamer. Then again, LBP really isn't your average game either... so the more I think of it, the more I can see why they might even entertain the thought of doing so.

I think a PC based editor would be cool, especially for those who are at work. But I'd prefer just to use a controller, as I'm used to playing console games much more then PC games.2009-05-16 17:04:00

Would mouse support really make editing on the PS3 much easier though? Maybe i'm wierd, but somehow i think the different perspectives (aside from front mode) would make it kinda hard to make shapes and things.2009-05-16 21:22:00

I doubt the mouse-based editor works exactly the same as the gamepad version. With a mouse and a keyboard, you would definitely want to do the shaping from a frontal perspective, then possibly attach objects with different view angles.

The benefits with a mouse & keyboard would mainly be quicker access to tools and objects, quicker shaping of objects and quicker movement around the level (a mouse pointer is faster and way more precise than using a sixaxis stick).

Writing these comments, I've mostly come to realize that the only big problem I have with the editor is that it's so slow to do things with it. The features themselves are just fine.

But this is the case with a gamepad as well. For me at least... All you are doing is moving a cursor around a 2 dimensional view anyway. This won't change based on your input device, the mouse just has far better speed and granularity.

I don't know about everyone else but i continuously play test things in both creator mode and game mode while creating and if i had to keep going from keyboard/mouse to game pad every few minutes, i would probably ditch the keyboard/mouse eventually.

That is a very narrow and stuck up view and pretty much what i would expect from a Mac advocate.

I'd expect to use both control methods during different phases. When I want to tweak a few settings and playtest, I'd keep to the gamepad, but when I draw layouts, decorate, create the basic architecture of the level, I'd definitely use mouse/keyboard.
