Bridget reviews stuff! (Give me requests!)

So, I'd been pondering this for some time.... the idea of starting up a "review corner" of my own.

Finally decided to do it, for a few very specific reasons:

1, I love the idea of level reviews, but let's face it.... For many people, it's hard to find the time, or maybe their PS3 explodes, or all sorts of things can happen. Thus, we have a rather slow-updating forum section here.

2, Im a huge LBP fan, and well experienced with the game. I play it alot.

3, I have absolutely stupid amounts of free time. Seriously.

4, This would be a GREAT way for me to find new levels to play. Usually I just hit "quick play" in game and see what pops out, but actually SEARCHING for new levels is really annoying. Having people just throw levels at me would be a whole lot easier


Also, being that I just love this place, I figured, if I can do something to help out the community in some way, that'd be great.

So here I am.


Now, anything I review is going to be done in great detail. No super short reviews here. I'll be reviewing levels, and scoring based on numerous aspects. These aspects may change, depending on the "genre" of the level being reviewed (if that applies) but for the most part, the aspects are as such:

Gameplay: The most important bit! How well the level plays overall, how well it's designed, how well all of the various bits form up to make a whole, and so on. Just like with video games as a whole, it's not the graphics or awesome sound that make a true, classic game.... it's the gameplay, and everything that goes along with it.

Graphics/sound: How good does the level look, and is the music and sound appropriate? This sort of thing can be important in attracting players to the level in question, but dont be fooled: This one isnt THAT important when it comes to formulating an overall score. I clump sound in here, because it's not enough to make an entire "aspect" by itself, since there's only so much customizing of sound in this game.

Challenge: Exactly how hard does this level try to kill you? Is it made for more casual players, or is it expert-only? Anyone on here that knows me, or has tried any of my creations (Particularly Danmaku Rave) knows that Im no stranger to challenge, and my own stuff is technically fair, but horribly brutal. I love a good challenge, and am not about to be turned away by one. The more difficult the level is, the higher this total will be. Wont affect the overall score TOO much, but I'll be keeping in mind the skill level of the "average" player when I come up with this value, and will comment as such.

Length/Pacing: Two important things that I think dont get brought up enough when it comes to game design in general. Many games suffer from bad pacing.... not a problem that's easily dealt with. A well paced level is one that easily holds your attention from start to finish, keeping everything fairly uniform throughout the level. Wheras one with bad pacing, might be, say, a level where you'll have one section with a ton of crap flying at you, and then one long boring walk to the next huge wad of flying doom, and so on. It doesnt help to keep the player interested. Level length also goes here, as that can affect this as well. Sometimes being too short or too long can be a bad thing.


Overall: The final point value, based on everything I've gone over in the review as a whole. What more need I even say here?


All score values are based on an "out of 10" system.




Now, I intend on playing these in a totally unbiased fashion.... you can send me anything you like..... but with one exception. NO MUSIC LEVELS, please. I dont know a blasted thing about music in general, and the music levels are the one thing in LBP that I just never touch. Anything else though, is fine.


I'll definitely accept requests. In fact, that'd be the main way I'd want to do this, as opposed to wandering through the levels section of this place, choosing at random. If you'd like your level reviewed, just say so here, or send me a PM, even. I'll produce a queue list if needed, which would be posted here.

One thing I wanna add: I dont mind if one person suggests multiple levels at a time for me to try.... Having enough time to do this at a decent pace, that shouldnt take away from anything..... but dont go crazy with it. No more than 3-4 at a time from one author, please. Dont come on here and just give me a list of like, 15 of your levels at once! Not entirely fair to others that may also want some feedback.

I'll probably create seperate topics for the actual reviews, like SA and some others usually do, as opposed to trying to mash them into this topic. Less headaches that way.

Looks like I may indeed have to put up a queue list.


One thing though to all: Dont get all angry at me if there's something I dont like in your level! I intend on being completely honest about these, after all.

Ok, now Im not sure this is happening tonight just yet.

Being that LBP is refusing to go online for some reason. Odd, PSN itself is just fine....

The game did just patch though (?), so their servers may be acting a bit wonky.


This is also annoying since I have a level completed that needs publishing, which now it looks like I cant do tonight like I'd wanted to...... argh.


EDIT: First review is up. I'd MEANT to do two of them tonight, but it took so long to get the blasted thing to get online properly, that I dont feel I have enough time left in the night to do a second PROPER review. Im not about to rush these things, so..... that one will have to wait.

Oh bridget. First of all i have made a very huge update with my level. Fixing alot of stuff.

The original level had 4 bosses actually but it looks like you missed the bonus boss. Well whatever this new version has 2 new bosses plus the 1 you missed the last time ( I have replaced 2 of the previus bosses) AND if you thought my previus level was to difficult...... Then you will regrett that this time:

BELOW THE ROOT - Prequel : Sewing Seeds (sampling of the first 2 but with some new things as well)

Very Soon - BELOW THE ROOT - Chapter 3 : Temple Grund (a good mix so far and about 50% complete! It is a darker more disturbing level though )

It's a semi-survival challenge, there is an end, but no one has made it so far, and if you die you get teleported to the score screen.
It's pretty challenging, you need to look further than a couple of seconds later, you need to think about what you will be doing later. I suggest multiple plays before you review, because it's a (sorta) fresh experience, and normal "LBP thinking" doesn't make you live.

Ok, my reviews got put on hold for a couple days there while I was out of state, up at the lake house.... which has no hi-def screen, so I cant take screenshots while up there. So, didnt do any reviews during that time. Gotta have screenshots. Just gotta. Part of the formula, you see.


Anyway, I'll have probably more than just one or two up tomorrow to make up for it.

The list I put up on my main post in this topic is actually just an altered copy of a list I'm keeping on my PC here (which also contains all the PSNs associated with the levels).

Due to it's bizarre formatting, it's easy to make a mistake (like accidentally deleting or not fully copying bits), so this might happen every now and then, where the queue list isnt updated properly.

Chances are though, that my main list always has everything on it. Laharlsama, your levels were already on there, but I musta done something wrong when I went to copy the list over to here last night.


If you should see this one happen again, feel free to PM me on it! It definitely helps, particularly since Im rather absentminded, and I might not notice right away unless someone points it out to me.

Ok.

So, Im back now......

......I admit I sorta got distracted from LBP due to a shiny new Xbox, and assorted shmups that I bought with it. Many shmups. Anyone that knows me, knows I cant resist that genre at all.


So, two zombified weeks later (I think), I've returned.


As it is, Im currently trying to deal with a couple of..... computer problems.... which will need to be fixed before I put up another review (not to mention I cant play any PC games till I fix it!). This is because of the screenshots; I always put screens in with the reviews, and right now I cant transfer them from the camera to the machine because it's being a snot.


I've gone and at least had a look at the next few levels on the list though.


One way or another I should have the **** problem here fixed within the next few days. Im just hoping it doesnt require a reformat (which it may).

This level is sort of a foundation level. I made it very easy so that players could get use to the unique checkpoints and enemies. The level that I just published, Klonoa: Vision 5-2, is much harder. However, I'd like this level to be reviewed for now.

So, Im back AGAIN.....

Though this last disappearance wasnt entirely my doing.

If anyone noticed, I'd been complaining about the computer I was on in my last post up there....

.....well, yeah, that machine went insane and imploded. Totally dead.

And then I was up at the lake house for a week, stuck with the Laptop of Sorrows. Agh, my sanity! It hurts!

FINALLY Im back on my MAIN computer. Which A: isnt stupid, and B: isnt insane.


I have, at least, spent a buncha time on LBP itself in the last two weeks; working on a level of my own, trying random levels online, and also, playing some of the upcoming ones on this list here to see what neat things are ahead.


Now I'd meant to put a couple of reviews up tonight, but got home so very late that there wasnt really time for any gaming at all.

Barring any wacky problems, I should have a couple up tomorrow night.

THIS computer can actually, you know, DO things, so that should work out nicely.


Bloody stupid laptops..... I dunno how my sanity actually survived using that accursed thing for that long.

Nah, havent so much been "busy", as much as just dealing with insane computers and such.

To make reviews the way I do, I need to be able to do two things: 1, get some screenshots.... which requires the PC not be a worthless hunk of fail, so it can accept the card from the digital camera I use....

....and 2, it *really* helps if the computer in question doesnt FREEZE or decide "it's time to install updates now!!!" WHILE IM TYPING IT OUT.


As it is, tonight, Im putting up multiple reviews. I'm just about to start on it right now; FINALLY, I can get this going again.


They'll probably be up in about 2 hours. I'm gonna write them up, and post them all at the same time, however many I end up doing.

Hey there! Now I know your queue is practically full but I was just wondering if you could review this level of mine.

Now I actually have two versions of this level. There is the regular LBP style version and then there is the 3D version where I implemented the 3D Layer Glitch into the level. So instead of asking for you to review two of the same levels I will just leave the option up to you. If you wish to review the regular version just play "Jurassic Park" but if you wish to review the 3D version look up "Jurassic Park IN 3D!" I don't mind the long wait for the review because all I really want is to know if there is anything else people would like to see in the level whether I can add it or not.

Ok, so, I went and fully updated the queue list.

If you've posted a review request in here, please go back to the first post and make sure that I didnt miss yours somehow. If there's any problems, please PM me and let me know.

And yes, Im aware of how sloppy the list is. Im lazy, so sue me. Making it look nicer requires effort. Effort is the enemy.


One other thing.

The next review on this list was actually "The Cave Descent", however, I was not able to find this level on the author's level list in-game.

As such, I have skipped that one, for now..... I'll happily jump right on it as soon as it can be found and played..... and moved onto the next, which is the Siren review.


Also, there's actually a 2nd review written up and about ready to be posted, buuuuuut..... my camera decided it would be HILARIOUS to run out of batteries AS I was taking a picture.

It wouldnt be fair to stick up a review without screenshots.... even temporarily.... after doing full screenshots for each and every previous one. As such, look for the next review tomorrow after I've replaced the stupid batteries.		2010-01-03 12:39:00
