A better (i think) "Cool levels" setup

Archive: 10 posts

I find it rather annoying that if your level didn't make it to the front pages in 7 days then your level is lost forever never to be played again...
So what would i think increase the plays in more levels would be that the 7 days rule only applied IF your level made it to the 1st page or the first 5 pages, since they're the most viewed, and it could be floating around the cool pages for a month or more if it doesn't get to the first page(s), THEN after a month or more its removed from the cool pages.
So what do you think?

Would be kinda cool, but problematic =/ There are so many levels published every day, 7 days is rather a hard guarantee for MM to fulfill... if they stayed around for a month, theres no way there would be enough room for all the levels published in a month. Also, you said the first 5 were the most viewed... so is tehre a real reason to stay on the cool levels?2009-05-13 09:11:00

Well if I take a look at the number of plays you get from being on cool levels page, I think 7 days is enough even though - of course - it is short compared to the work put into it from people like in this forum. Mm has the difficult task to try to satisfy everyone if possible. I would suggest more categories then "Cool levels", "most played", "most hearted" and so on but something like "Most favourit" hand picked by Mm, or categories like "Boss fight" "Puzzle" "Platforming" "Story" etc.

In one interview Alex talked about trying to implement linking like on websites trying to better inter-connect the levels. Maybe if this would come the levels will work like websites.

However, I am very sure the last word on this is not spoken, yet.

Initially it was a scary setup, but IMHO time have proven that MM knew what they did with that.
After 7 days, if you are not satisfied with the visibility your level had, simply publish it again in a new slot and retry.
Just forget about the 500,000 plays and 400,000 hearts given to oldest cool levels; only if you are very well known as author you can match a similar score.
And I'll try to explain what I mean saying that:
Before publishing Legend of a hero in its first edition I was perfectly unknown as author, I gathered 2000 plays per level (ch.1 and 2).
Then came the 'new' settings of the cool pages and I decided to improve theese levels with all the feedback I didn't added yet.
So I published Legend of a hero EX (in a new slot) that was more polished and worked a lot better ('behind the stage&apos and filled with the most of the player-friendly hints I received in the board and (most of all) here; I gathered again 2000 plays (from different players I guess) with the difference that I reached the first page in the last 5 hours of life...
I missed the right moment or day of first publication or haven't pimped it enough or whatever you like...
So I have now a total of more or less 4000 people who has played a level of mine among theese 4; this assuming that who has played the 1st played the 2nd same way and viceversa; this is not completely true, so we can say I have... 5000?... people who knows me as author (nevermind the hearts, let's talk about the plays).
Then I published Platforms Madness in its first form with an ugly title (EASY MODE -- Miglioshin's Platforms Madness) locking the Extreme mode for 10 days avoiding bad random rating due to its very extreme difficulty (just know that what is meant to be the easy mode is actually rated extreme...).
Gathered 4,000 plays and a lot of very useful feedback.
(Now we are around 9,000 following my thoughts).
Since I was not satisfied enough I fixed the most part of the missed bugs (very annoying 'cause they are crashing events and not happens the most of the plays...), changed title and icon and published it again.
Platforms Madness reached the top page around the 4th day. gathered about 10,000 (still played though) and 1000 hearts.

It is better than Legend of a Hero?

My personal answer is that I was a little bit known after that, so some people check my personal page from time to time (same I do with my favourite authors) and played the newest level they spotted.
I add also a bit of 'following my level' in the very first day to avoid bad ratings it not deserves (like 1 or 2 stars from the well known griefers...).
It happened two times in the first 50 plays so I deleted and republished.
If you reach 200 plays with genuine ratings you're actually 'safe' from the griefers.

The second question is:
Why if Platforms have around 10,000, Legend have still 2,000?

My personal answer is that people are not very willing to play old levels, with some exceptions.

In conclusion:
Don't worry if your level do not reach the 1st page and gather tons of plays and hearts in 7 days, if you concentrate to create a good quality level (or what you think it is a good quality) the plays will consequently follow.
But don't forget to advertise and pimp it a bit.
My best level (public opinion, not mine) was built by joke and to pratice with the editor and I didn't advertise it at all...

Phew... I made it.

Yeah a month sounds a bit unrealistic. Just having MM picks as a front page option would be good. It's far from perfect but it would be a start.

As I've said on linking before, it's only going to work if its an outbound linking system, like websites; rather than inbound, like youtube responses. We will get an L4L phenomenon and all the H4Hers will create their own little (big) spammy link network, but that doesn't matter, based on the reasonable assumtion that quality creators will link to quality creations and the no-one can spam a good creation with links to their rocketbombcheetah level. I'm afraid I don't have the confidence in MM to implement it the right way round...

Yep, I agree, it sounds good to me.
THIS is an idea!

I know everybody feels their levels don't get enough plays.. but a week is a pretty long time considering they've taken account for everyone..2009-05-13 19:05:00

I think a month would be a bit too long. Sure, it would give more levels a chance but this would be too many levels moving up the cool pages. This would clog up the cool levels pages and even probably make the cool levels page remove levels from there even if their time hasn't expiered on the cool levels page to make space for the other levels. Also, remember that most levels people create are cheap, rocket cheetah, h4h or "race" levels that we do NOT want to see on page 1 of the cool levels page.2009-05-13 20:31:00

Actually it would be cool and pretty fair that the 7 days rule only start at the moment you stick on page 5 or better. It would help creators that aren't 14 years old and with a life you know. We can't be constantly republishing to hit the first cool pages fast like those freaking kids.

Seems many misunderstood what i meant (except Ranger 0), i didn't mean they stay the whole month in the front mage or anything, just meant that if they get to the first 5 or 10 pages THEN they have 7 days there, then are "dismissed". the other levels bellow the 5th/10th page or so are the only ones to be able to saty a month so they get a better chance at being seen.2009-05-13 23:00:00
