A Gert Big Green 'Un

Archive: 23 posts

Hello all, i've just re-published my latest effort and would love some serious feedback.
The first time I published this level it got an average of 3 stars, but since re-publishing it's got 5 stars (from the few people who have tried it)

What's going on?

Is it average or not? Got me a bit confused so I'd love a few pointers. If you'd be willing to give it a go, I'd be as happy as a pig in plop!

Its called "A Gert Big Green 'Un" (don't forget the apostrophe!) and my PSN is frogmeister.

Sorry I've no photos or vids. No idea how to put them up.

Trrrra.

Haven't played the level yet, but heres how you put up photos:

Step 1: Take pictures in game using popit
Step 2: Select these pictures, and tell them to "upload to HDD"
Step 3: go to your PS3 photos section, and you'll see the pictures you uploaded- get these to your computer via a flash drive, or something similar.
Step 4: Upload your pictures to a photo sharing site, like www.photobucket.com
Step 5: use (before your URL) and (after your URL) tags to put your pictures in your post. Viola! Pictures

Hope that helps

Thanks burnvictim, but I've got no way of getting the pictures from my ps3 to my computer. No flash drives or card readers.
Thanks for the info anyway.

well, i havent done it personally, but i think you might be able to upload off the ps3 directly to a photo site... worst case, you can have someone else do it for you 2009-05-13 10:26:00

Just played this.... wow, this level's very cool! Great design, complex.... it's kind of funny, many times we get a lot of new creators and based on the name of the level, the PSN name (cute), and the lack of photos here I initially thought this level might me a simple little game.

Man, I was wrong - the design here is fantastic, complex, and looks great! I played through it twice and couldn't find anything really wrong.... the only thing at all that stood out as awkward were those jumping characters that look like MM objects, but that was really a minor point.

Anyway, I gave you another 5 star and a heart. I'm thoroughly impressed.

Love ya.

Well, I thought I'd give it ago, and I too was impressed by it... I thought the exact same thing judging by your post, but was wrong to judge, as the level was quite good... The last bit when you go up the mountains and behind the waterfall, made everything look really spaced out then, specially after going through all those little confined areas in the first half of the level... I thought it was quite random too, in a way... Just like my last level, Bubble Hunter - The Waterfall...

I think you and me have something in common, in one way or another, random thoughts = random levels... Correct me if I'm wrong though... LOL!

My levels are a bit random, I agree. Thanks for playing my level. As soon as I turn on my PS3 I'll give your levels a go.

I really enjoyed this level. Yes, it is a bit random, but in my opinion that fits the LBP style quite well sometimes! I enjoyed the visuals (the mountain scene at the end is awesome) and the gameplay was solid throughout. I don't recall getting frustrated or stuck at any point in the level and I don't recall any bugs or problems with the level either.

It was a simple, fun level. Nice job!

Thanks very much for the nice comments.
I was getting a little dispondant, as my levels only seemed to be getting 2 or 3 stars at best. Not that stars should matter so much, but I spend weeks or months making each level and it's good to know it's time well spent.
I want to replace the MM baddies, just before the cart ride, as ccubbage suggested, but I don't seem capable of producing anything other than a squarish thing that moves.
Any idaes you may have would be great to hear.

Played this earlier today. Great level! You might want to make it uncopyable though- i searched for the title, and found one disreputable moocher had already republished it as their own, and i hate to see glory squandered like that =/

It looks and plays well... it may be a little random, but so am i ;p Liked your treasure chests there- original (as they're not the copypastad one everyone else uses lol), and they work great . I did notice that there were some visible sound speakers on your mountains- you might want to change that.

Sorry that my memory is kinda vague... if you'd like more feedback (as this is minimal at best lol) tell me, and i'll be sure to leave my full commentary.

Thanks for that Burnvictim. I'll sort out the visible speakers - don't know how I missed those.
As for someone already copying the level and re-publishing it, not sure how I feel about that. I did want every level I publish to be copyable so people could play around with it. But if they're just copying and re-publishing under their own name, then surely my name will still be attached to it somewhere? If not then I suppose I had better start locking them.
Thanks for the feedback.

No, your name isn't attatched anywhere >.> The reason i really mention it is BC there are a LOT of people who take credit for other peoples work. Want proof? Look up a music song- you will find HUNDREDS of versions of the same levels, because the original creator made their level copyable, or shared their item. If you want it to be copyable, thats fine... i just warn you that others may take credit for your hard work =/2009-05-15 12:33:00

Thanks for the warning. I don't mind if people copy it and change it a bit, but my level was copied and nothing was changed. As you can probably guess, I'm not too happy about that so have locked all of my levels.
I'll never make THAT mistake again.
Many thanks for bringing it to my attention. I owe you.

haha, you owe me nothing! like i said, i just hate to see creators getting ripped off like that. I think you'll find that most of the community here feels exactly the same way- i just mentioned it first If you really want to let people mess with it, you can always keep a locked copyable level, and send the key to those you trust with access.2009-05-15 12:55:00

Good idea. Although I've learnt my lesson and will NEVER publish a copyable level again.

Cool level! You've got some neat challenges in it and I especially like how you really worked the gameplay into all three planes. The ending seemed a little sudden for me but it's just a personal preference - I wouldn't recommend changing it at this point.

I gave it 5 stars! Looking forward to more levels from you. Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks Morgana. I know what you mean about the ending but as is usually the case I ran out of thermo. Originally there was a lift where the ending was buti I wouldn't have been able to add anything else.
It's those floatingpoint bubbles during the cart bit. Pushed the thermo to the top.
Thanks very much for your comments.

A suitably green beginning...
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/2/1403582/A%20suitably%20green%20beginning.jpg
5 stars from me as well... Very nice. When words like; random and eclectic are thrown about I generally worry that the level looks hap-hazzard or messy... not the case here.
Plane crazy
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/2/1403582/plane%20crazy.jpgGood fun gameplay moving from plane to plane. Plenty of chances to score and a great lift/cart design near the end! (I can see the 'SWINGY' tags now...)
Mm... points!
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/2/1403582/Mm...%20POINTS%21.jpg
Not really sure how Morgana got to 70,000 points but if its secrets and scoring oppurtunities you want... keep those eyes open.
Secret-secret, I got a secret!

Some really nice camera work only further enriches some really wonderful vistas.
http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/2/1403582/mountains.jpg And just when I swear I'd never go near electrified pikes and glass again... What's this!?! (File under Frogmeister's signature: secret chambers near the ...) In the dark???
If I didn't use glass myself to foul people up I'd be upset... and having fun.

[B]'Snake pit' is good as well (to a lesser extent), its only flaw is the boss battle doesn't really work... felt more like blind luck than any real skill... still, trademarks are all here; fun; humor; and style. I am thoroughly convinced "Green 'un" is clearly your level, and, if I have the displeasure of running across the copy, Aargh... brings out the 'irate' in this pirate.

[I would change those hopping combatants though in the garden... the rest of the level is so unique right down to the color coded green is clockwise- purple=counter clockwise... that they stick out. Its a garden, replace them with; beetles or butterflies or garden gnomes it'd be a snap! Hey if you really don't wanna do it yourself hold a contest... If that doesn't appeal to you-- I can do it--it just has to be creature that jumps right? Oh, I know! how about green kangaroos w/boxing gloves!]

NO! Not again.http://www.fileden.com/files/2007/9/2/1403582/No%21%20%20Not%20again.jpg

Nice one Gravel!

I really appreciate the feedback. And the photos.

I totally agree with your points about the hopping enemies. I used them because I'm really, terribly, awfully bad at making enemies. But they do seem to jar against the overall theme. I shall change them for something less cheesy ASAP.

And the ending's a bit lame too. I stuck with the green theme, but it's all over far too abruptly. And the styling looks a bit simple too. Not sure what to do with it. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

So one last thanks, Gravel. I owe you a Gert Big 'Un!

I've finally got round to changing the bouncing enemies, but not sure if the new addition is any good. There are now 2 spiders instead of the 3 bouncing MM enemies.
Any feedback appreciated.
Cheers guys.

Btw, to upload and post pics from the PS3 you have to first take the pic --> Upload to HDD --> Upload to one of your picture albums in here, if you don't have one just go to User CP --> Pictures & Albums, make an album and upload your level's pics --> Copy the 2nd link below the pic and paste it in your post.
And listo! Pics in your posts directly from PS3.
