omg! what's happening to my PS3!?

Archive: 47 posts

Ok i think i got a major problem with my PS3... well i don't know actually but i'm sure that it's not a good thing @_@

Day 1:
I was playing LBP in the evening, and after about 20 mins. of playing my ps3 suddenly shut off, without freezing or any other sign that could've indicated that it was going to shut off >_>. After that I saw a red blinking light. So yah after that i just hit the switch on the back of the PS3 leaving it for about 4 hours.

Hit the switch again, but i couldn't activate the ps3 with mah controller so i just pressed the button on ps3!
so far so good! I played i few hours and turned it off... no problem.

Day 2:
This time i could fire up my ps3 with the controller (yay!, i thought i was save >_> ) played for 2 hours... booom!!! off again <__>

I did the exactly the same what i did on DAY 1.. This time it couldn't stay on for long, because it shut off after only 10 minutes ...

So Currently my PS3 is off because... i need your help
Is my ps3 gonna die?

I could seriously get some advice now :/

UPDATE:

My ps3 is dead now

Chances are your disk is failing. Same old thing that has happened to most other people around this forum. Have you tried pulling out the power cable at the back, then pulling out all others cables (HDMI, ethernet etc..) and letting the PS3 rest for a few hours?2009-05-09 11:06:00

Is it in a enclosed space, and does it get loud after a while?

Then it may be overheating.

Yeah this sounds to me like a overheating problem that happened to my XBOX360.

Yarbone dude, the things that you are saying are happening sound exactly the same that happened to me 360, with it playing less and less time each time I tried to play it. Obviously the 360 used to switch off and 2 flashing red lights would show.
It was due to overheating and I had to get it repaired (well I just went and got a new one )
I understand that the 360 is different, but it just sounds too similar to me

I started having this sort of problem a few months ago. only happened 2 or 3 times though but after the 3rd it stopped switching off on it's own, but then strugled to read ps3 games and eventualy currupted my hard drive and then wouldn't even let me insert a disc. with all this it was out of warrenty so i had to buy a new 1... thanks alot SONY... so it sounds like you've got the start of a similar problem or it could be somethng different but what ever it is it needs looking at. and 1 more thing, if the problem/s carry on or gets worse don't keep trying to use it becouse you might loose whats on the harddrive( and that meens starting again 2009-05-09 11:32:00

You can back up like that, but I don't think you'll be able to get trophies on them if you copy them back across. I hope it fixes itself 2009-05-09 11:47:00

Trophies are not linked to your gamesaves but rather your online profile, so you don't have to worry about them.

First thing I would do is backup anything that can be backed up to an external drive or if all you have is a flash drive start backing up individual items on it and transfer them to your PC for storage.

Once you get everything backed up you can try what you want but I would not replace the HDD yet since it may not be the problem and installing a new one might result in the faulty PS3 damaging the new HDD.

Blow out all vent holes.
Set PS3 vertical to see if it runs longer or stops cutting off.

From experience with PC's, the compound used to attach heatsinks to the components can and will dry up over time. It loses its heat transferring properties. So yes things can be overheating and you would not be able to tell from the sound of the PS3 or how much heat you think you feel coming out of it. Someone technically inclined would have no problem cracking open their PS3, especially if its out of warranty anyway, cleaning off old compound and putting some fresh high quality compound back on.

thanks man, i appreciate it. I wasn't planning to replace the HDD, it's just that i needed to know if it is possible for when my PS3 really is broken.

And maybe it's indeed overheating so i'll see what i can do about the dust (if there's even dust )
Anyway thanks.

You need the receipt.

See under EU law (http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:31999L0044:EN:HTML) you can get electronic goods replaced from the reseller for up to two years. Most resellers will obviously say that false or that it your fault the PS3 broke, but they usually give up as soon as you mention that law and will replace it for free.

(To get the Dutch version of the directive just replace the EN in the link with NL)

If you have everything backed up, see if you can get on the recovery menu. If you can, reformat.
If you can't...then I'm sorry.

Nope, two of my friends' PS3s have died in the last few weeks.

It seems that Sony was wrong about it being a 10-year system.

it's more like a 1 year system >_> ....

i think i need to prepair for ultimate boredom.

Although, the place where i bought the ps3 is owned by the father of a very good friend of mine. Maybe that'll work when i'm trying to get a new one (for free)

More like a 4 month system for me...
My fifth replacement is sort of ruining the average though. 7 month without a failure. ^.^

Sorry to hear that. It sounds like it has YLOD. I'm not sure what you can exactly do. You might be able to ring up some sort of Sony customer service if they have one in your country but you might just have to buy a new one.2009-05-09 18:51:00

Hold down the power button of your ps3 for ages, until it beeps a lot. THat's the first step.

I think your priority should be to keep the data on that drive from being damaged, assuming its not already. Something is not right with the system. If it is in fact a heat issue, getting it to come on again without having fixed the problem could very well cause more damage or corrupt the drive.2009-05-09 20:49:00

Guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

UPDATE:

i'm able to send mah PS3 to SONY O_O @_@

the only things i needed where:
- serial-number
- date of buying PS3...

Now the date was like a major problem, because i had no receipt or whatever.
So.... i was kinda thinking of ANY possible place where i could find the date, and i suddenly had major awesome idea :3

I haz a confirmation e-mail in mah inbox about registering PSN.... You know, that e-mail you receive to confirm you registration. It was the same date as i bought it so... Just look at the date when you received that e-mail and voila!!!!! Yay!

So now the only thing i have to do is send it.... and wait >_> to long

aaww... meanwhile i can watch a major bunch of movies xD

Well now we're in the same boat...only mine's been broken for 5 months...

Do you need the exact date, because I didn't register for PSN the day I got it, I didn't have internet at my house.

hmm... i unno :/.... What i did was check the date of the e-mail, i went to the store where i bought it and then they checked it, searching for: PS3 60G+2 games+1 controller. after that they printed out the receipt for me....

so my advice, go back to the place where you bought it ...

with a date... like i dunno you can be wrong about the date. It doesn't have to be exactly for them to find it.

If i had a broken PS3 and nobody would replace/fix it for me, I would hang on to the piece of garbage until a class action lawsuit is filed. Or perhaps looking into starting one myself. If enough ps3s break sony might go microsoft and extend the warranty.

But thats counting on Sony to pull their heads outta their butts and actually pay attention... i've given up on that this generation...

I suppose it wouldn't fly. It worked against Microsoft because the Xbox360 break tremendously more than the PS3. The PS3 currently is still in the "industry standard" like under 10% supposedly.

The machines ARE **** this gen though. But it's also a result of the very very bad handling of this industry by big corporations and also the archaic mentality of many people just wanting the next hardware bomb instead of having the next great game design.

At least they will hopefully learn something this gen as the high cost console are completely pwned by Nintendo's Wii sales wise. I suppose next gen won't be as much as a technical leap, should cost less to produce and will probably be more durable. But then again it's extreme capitalism world so if they can manifacture on the cheap, they will.

The sad but true thing here is Nintendos the only company who seems like they know what their doing. I like this video for last generation.

YouTube - Morgan von Webb in "Web of Destruction" Skit

But the simple thing is here. Xboxs broke, ps2s broke, 360s extended their warranty, and now ps3s are dropping like flies. The only Wii problem I heard of was DOA lauch systems, and idiots killing their lcd/plasma tvs (their faults IMO l2 wriststrap).

I still got my Gamecube, I'll still got my SNES. I'd have my NES if it didnt get burgled when i was 8. I still have my slim ps2 i bought a few years ago (wont play ps1 games or dvds ) but still plays ps2 games!

I remember when my first ps2 died (disk read errors), my dad called sony. They told him it would be free of charge across the board. We shipped it out, and about 6 weeks later I received a completely different refurbished ps2, with a bill of 76 bucks. I swore off sony, but alas MGS keeps my coming back.

I just wish Sony wasn't in such a state of dissarray this generation. Failure at every turn... LBP for wii anybody?
