Monster Brain Tech Demo

Archive: 13 posts

IDK if anyone else has created anything similar... if they have, whoops, i spent a bit of time doing stuff i didn't need to!

Pardon the lack of pictures... i figured you all knew what monster brains looked like, and my setup is kinda small to get a good picture.

I built this as i was working on my Boss Rush 3 entries, and decided that maybe others could benefit.

Basically, what i made was a monster brain system that works with logic (as it is key switch dependant). In other words, you can make it so that a monster or (probably more acurately) a boss has a certain amount of hit points via a number of monster brains, not paintinator shots.

I set up a little tech demo titled- you guessed it! "Monster brain tech demo" by Burnvictim42. its on the western bulge of africa, and has a picture of a monster brain on it.

With the brain setup, you can make it so...
-killing one brain spawns another in a different location.
-monsters have a number of "lives" and will revive themselves after a given period of time which you can set (could make interesting challenges to kill all the brains before they revive in order to kill the monster)
-monsters attack patterns can change (change the first brain so it doesn't trigger a key switch, and when teh second brain comes out, it triggers the key switch, and a new set of killer moves)
-killing a brain causes something else to happen (ie: you blow up the brain, and some explosives go off)
and probably a lot more... but thats all ive thought of now.

Personally, i made this setup for the ability to revive creatures (and bosses BWUAHAHAHA). I tried making it as small as possible, so hopefully it will fit in most creatures. It will require a thin coverplate to cover the ugly insides though

I also made (and demonstrated) how monsters can be killed via a health bar system- where the monster loses health when they don't have a brain. This is also available in the level.

The password to the items is these four stickers: Monkey Head, Mr. Beaver say's No, Cow Head, and Donkey Head. Tell me if you have any problems with the item setup.

Again, don't know if anyones done it before, (or even if anyone wants to use it lol) but thought i'd share it with the community. Happy gadding everyone

Wow, this seems really complex - but useful
I'll check it out tonight

actually, its really not all that complex What it boils down to is an emitter, a key switch, and some finely crafted holding pieces ;p

But since the brain system works on an emitter basis, rather than a one shot type mechanism, theres a lot more creativity you can implement. and like i said, it can work with logic, so you can hook up gates to it and do things like " if brain A AND brain B are gone, emit brain C" and you can still destroy the monster with a protected brain when the others are dead and gone (though i just decided to make my demo monsters out of dissolve to make it easier lol)

This sounds promising! I really want to take a look at this cause I think I've got an idea with that hungrysaur, you have to defeat him with dat finnal battel OF DOOM!!!! and when da brains of dat bodie r broken u have to get in dat tummy and destroi dat last brains!!2009-05-08 20:04:00

ILL PROBABLY NEED BRIEFING ON THIS, as my spider boss mech is also walker, so to balance it it uses different materials, but a paintinator battle & paintinator switch only destroy dissolve, meaning BRAAAAAAAAAAINNSSSSS for other body parts.2009-05-09 02:34:00

I tried making brains respawn and I also tried that healthbar, but I have no idea how it works. I just made a block of wood, placed the brain with the dissolve material directly on it (I didn't glue it or something I just placed it IN it so it was stuck anyway) and I connected the magnetic switch to the emmiter, and the piston of the healthbar but it didn't do squat because the block of wood disappeared. Then I figured out I had needed the first block of dissolve material (where the brain is placed on) had to be loose from the other block of dissolve material where the emitter is on. I did that, but the brain didn't respawn. Could you upload a quick video of how it should be installed?2009-05-09 09:58:00

I don't really have a video source... hmm... i'll have to put an installation guide in somewhere lol. sorry, i didn't think about that >.> My horrible mistake.

Basically, to "install" it in your monster, just put the box in your monster, and delete the brain and the little piece of dissolve its attatched to. If you don't do this, the brain ends up glued to your monster(along with the box part) and won't be able to respawn (and if thats the only brain, it'll cause your monster to die).

^^attatched brain, won't respawn. Easily indicated by the fact that the brain casing remains.

The way the mechanics are set up currently are this: the emitter emits teh brains (no duh ) and the mag key switch tells it when to emit the brains (when the brain isn't there).

If you want to change when the brains emit, you can just change what activates it.If you want to make it so the brains "move", you just hook up the mag switch to a different emitting box. If you want to make the monster change the attack pattern, or trigger something (based on key switches) you change the first brains key switch and set up a magswitch to pick up the new emitted brain's key, so it starts the attack (or sets something off). If you want to change respawn time, or number of lives, just mess with the emitter settings (frequency, and number emitted total).

Since the brain isn't a glued part of the body, the monster won't be destroyed automatically. You'll need to create your own mechanism to do that (simplest way is a mag switch set to one shot a protected brain when all the other brains (red key switches) are gone)
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff297/Burnvictim42/LBP/APhoto_2-1.jpg^^respawn brains with a protected brain
http://i240.photobucket.com/albums/ff297/Burnvictim42/LBP/APhoto_1-2.jpg
^^both brains are popped, this triggers protected brain, and monster dies.

I always get so confused as to what can be edited via captured objects, so if any of this isn't possible, i'll edit the prize in a way (ie: capturing the object before the brain is emitted).

Now, the reason the health bar is wonky, is for the exact same reason above (my defugalties with how editing captured items work).

Basically, all you do to make the health bar work is hook up a key switch to read when the brain isn't there (ie: its inverted for red) then connect it to the piston. I didn't attatch a key automatically, because i wasn't sure if you could move the key or not. You can set the time it takes to kill it by the time the bar takes to reach the bottom. When the key reaches the switch at the bottom, you set it to kill your monster in some way. You have to attatch this one a little funky (cut out a hole, and insert it) so the parts dont glue together. personally, i'd just make my own, as all it is is a piston with a green block, and a red background lol.

...eventually, i'll have to find a way to video this. or if someone has a camera and can figure out my instructions, that would be great lol.

Hopefully that wasn't too unclear. Like i said, i need to figure out a good way to get this across... pictures don't quite do justice on such a small scale =/

Thanks for putting the pictures up (and your guide), it's a lot clearer now
I'll try to make it once more when I have the chance (if my little brother isn't on the ps3 or I'll have to whine him off )

I HAVE a camera, but sadly I have to record it off a tube-screen (if that's what it called), so the quality isn't that great. And I don't know how to install it so it'd be rather useless if I filmed how to set it up

Also I lol'd at your sackboy. Great design!

Thanks for all the comments guys. I've updated my demo level a few times, including a brief "how to" (put the brain in your monster, remove the original brain and dissolve part its attatched to)

Should i find it depressing that this demo gets better ratings and heart to play ratios than my real levels? >.> I guess i should just invent things instead
