I am 43 years old and have been playing video games since before pong was pong. I grew up in the pine barrens of New Jersey where we had a lot of dirt roads. 'Paved' roads consisted of jagged chunks of stone and 'gravel' embedded into the tarmac. In the early 80's I had a paper route that stretched over 12 miles long (houses were not real close together). I used to ride my bike 14 miles into town to stare at intellivision cartridge boxes to glean insight into which ones were good. In lieu of actual divine inspiration... I simply bought them all ($29.99 a shot). One summer day while I was finishing my route, I was confronted with a small but troubling problem. My second to last paper customer was across the road of a freshly resurfaced intersection. Hot black tar on a hot black day. I had to cross to deliver my rounds... there was no alternative way around... either I crossed the fresh steaming slick tar and made it across... (which then would enable this 15 year old to purchase a new game) OR, I waited for the township workers to come back from their lunch and lay the dirt covering over the tar...(dont ask me why, thats how they did it back then) and trek to the store another day.

It was hardly a question of would I cross, but more of ...how to cross? Fast and quick traversing danger and reaching safety safely, or, slow and methodical?

When I layed the bike down, she slid right out from under me, It really wasn't the hot tar rushing up my shorts that I remember from that humbling day, or the gravel that tore up my hips and thighs. It was the concern and kindness a beautiful young woman showed me as she poured her husbands' lawnmower gasoline over my body in an attempt to remove said tar... Now that was a bundle of experience points! Incidentally, I generally try now to be much less *ahem* rash in my decision making.		2009-05-14 05:16:00
