"It's been 5 days since your plane crashed in the arctic and you've now run out of food
- it's time to get off this mountain! An exciting romp through an arctic setting with plenty
of atmosphere, fun, and surprises. Watch out for those polar bears.

Hi all, I'm new here to LBPCentral and would like to introduce myself by introducing my first level, Stranded in the Snow. Having only had Little Big Planet for a couple of days I decided to launch myself into making the ideas in my head come to life, and this is the first result. I've been testing it extensively for the past week or so and making a bunch of changes every time I play and now, finally, I feel it's ready for your expert criticism. I'm really looking to grow as a creator but I need your help, so I'd appreciate it if you have a little play through, maybe bring a couple of friends along for the ride, and let me know what I can do it make the experience a better one, and obviously if you find any nasty bugs I've love to know about those too. Anyone who gives me feedback will obviously receive it in return, though don't worry if I don't manage to do it right away, it's exam period at the moment and I'll be a little busy for a few days.

Just for clarification:
Level name: Stranded in the Snow
PSN Name: MrOrangeOh (Both are the letter O, not zeroes)

Phew, that was a bit lengthy

I thought this was a very enjoyable level. It seemed a tad short, but not bad at all for a first level. I enjoyed the visuals, the creatures, and the environment you created. The geyser sequence was very creative, but my favorite had to be the landslide at the end! I thought that was really cool.

I did notice a sensor switch right after you fall into the cave. I didn't see any other switches, so I assume you'll want to hide that one as well. My only other criticism would be the use of the Global Lighting Tool. Some of the transitions seemed a bit jarring to me, even though I understand you were trying to emulate the feeling of emerging from a cave. It wasn't that big of a deal though.

Anyway, nice level. I look forward to seeing more stuff from you in the future!

I played your level and I really enjoyed it

Pros:
+Some nice character design
+Polar Bear fight!
+Riding down the hill on a tree
+The adorable design on the trees
+Good use of the Global Lighting Tool

Cons:
-A tad too short
-Perhaps an overuse of the GLT?

Overall I rated your level 4 Stars and tagged it cute.

Thank you both for your feedback. I've just had a quick edit of the GLTs and hopefully made the transitions less jarring, as well as hiding the sensor switch (thanks for that)

I've a quick question about the geyser for you two if you happen to look this way again - did you realise to grab the skull on your own, or did you need the hint from the NPC, or did you see the diagram at the base of the geyser on the right? I ask because when I've played the level with people, a lot seem to get stuck at this point, so I added the diagram and made the hint a little more explicit. I really wanted to avoid adding a switch and having anything 'artificial' in the environment, I hated putting the button in the polar bear's cave (if you found that) but saw no other solution.

Regarding the length issue... I still have a quarter of the thermometer left and when my exams are over I could change the level to have the geyser rise you up and to the left, and from there have the player transition travel left, up, back to the right and then to the polar bear area as usual. I think I'll do this before moving onto my next project - thank you

I found out relatively easily, had no problem. Could just be me accidentally grabbing the skull, but it seemed slightly out of place so I grabbed it 2009-05-07 20:17:00

I played your level twice and the first time I grabbed the skull right away. Like Coxy, I thought it seemed out of place, so I grabbed it. After shooting up into the air though, I wondered if I missed anything, so I played again and this time, I saw the NPC standing on the other side. I felt that the clues you left were sufficient.2009-05-07 20:34:00

Just had a play, I thought it was quite fun:

Pros:
+Some very nice visuals
+Very good use of sounds
+The tree slide ending was way cool

Cons:
-The cave/forest lighting transition made the sky dark. You only need to adjust the darkness setting of the lighting tool
-You should really hide the bolts on the polar bear

Great first level, I look forward to seeing your future levels. 5 stars

I've taken onboard the further advice about my use of the GLT and changed it so that only the darkness setting is effected - you're right, this looks much better

I've also hidden the bolts on the polar bear (one of those little silly things you see every time you test it but just don't actually take in) so thank you for that.

I've also changed the font on the cloud that tells you to hold on in the geyser sequence to one of the custom ones in the Font Cache level and it looks much cleaner and is easier to see at the speed in which you pass it.

just played this level

+ I like the theme and the atmosphere. you've used the global lightning tools (gets darker when you go into a cave) and the music tools (building up tention before the boss) very wisely.
+ Nice look & creatures, love the style!

- The rock lands a bit clumsy...
- found the skull a bit out of place. maybe you could use a big snowflake or something similar which fits the snow theme better.
- The last mountain before the tree-slide part is a bit.... white
(although I slighty have an idea why you did this :-) )

Overall, very good level and i'm very impressed that this is your first creation!
Looking forward to more.

Thanks for the feedback everyone, I promise I'll get round to giving you some back as soon as possible, I'm sure I could find time to do a couple this weekend.

Has anyone got any suggestion for what I can do with the giant rock? At the moment it's pulled by two balloons that are tethered to dissolve, at the right height they hit a ramp which moves the rock to the right where a magnetic key switch connected to more dissolve disconnects the rock from the balloons. The rock is also attached to the geyser by elastic to stop it rising too fast.

I feel I've got the rising effect done well - I wanted it to wobble and be a bit unsteady, but Mother-Misty is quite right about the landing, it's sort of clumsy.

The skull is supposed to be fitting with the fact that the geysers are a dangerous area, and a sort of forewarning of the upcoming boss, but I'll have a think about possible alternatives

I think you're probably right about that mountain, and I'll see if I can't texture it to look more like the rest of the terrain. Am I right in thinking that taking a picture of the snow material used throughout the level when in 'front view mode' and using it as a sticker will look better?
