J.W's ~ Modern Times (Major updates)

Archive: 40 posts

A whole new area added - You can now enter the Blue Angel
This makes the side quest a lot more easier
Many things to do in the new area
New music added
Tweaks to certain sections

THIS WAS A PREVIOUS LEVEL I DID FOR MY "TIME" PROJECT AND MAY BE FAMILIAR TO PEOPLE WHO PLAYED IT BACK THEN SO, DONT BE CONFUSED BY THE COMMENTS BY OTHER PEOPLE. THE LEVEL HAS HAD CHANGES TO MAKE IT A SINGLE LEVEL EXPERIENCE

Hey all!

My new level!

Basically, the synopsis is this...

You wake to another day in your run down neighborhood...Only this time, something seems strange about the place.
Mother gives you an errand which involves crossing the neighborhood...

*Investigate the neighborhood
*Beware of muggers

This level involves many side activities and allows you to misbehave and achieve a bad rating on the unique "Good or Bad 'o' Metre" at the end of the level.
There are secrets and much to learn and decode.

I go for structure over randomly put down obstacles and i go for stories too. If your one for mindless fun, i may not please you but, i feel i'm doing something ambitious so, please try!

Screen shots below

I'll be looking forward to your results!

P.S: I can't wait to see what you have all created and LBP RULES!

Well, I just got done playing this and I think you did a great job creating a level that felt really big. I'm very interested to see what comes next. The ending was really cool and very cliff-hanger-ish. I wasn't able to break into the bank vault..are all three parts to the key in this level out of curiosity? There is a magic mouth that's visible near the pile of cars that you may want to adjust.
Overall its a very interesting concept and I think you did a good job keeping track of the player, use of logic, dialogue and moving the story along. And once again, nice job on the end.

I just finished playing your level and (aside from the previously mentioned visible mouth) had a great time. The title screen was interesting and the two instances of the shadow person caught my attention. I can't wait for part two. 2009-05-07 23:29:00

Thank you for the feedback! you always miss something don't you and it's right there on my screenshot! lol i will adjust the mouth asap.

Yes all parts to the key are on the level.

I was worried about the flow as almost every level i play is very uptempo and i like to have things build up.

quick question, if i delete a level from my moon, will it still be online?

Oh and one more thing...
as a homage to my fave platformer, Kid Chameleon, i have added secrets obtainable by putting sackboy in certain area fields. Upon doing so, you will receive a 'P' box containing a 7x multiplyer (2100 points) or a prize when jumped on...

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=489&stc=1&d=1241742489

Those who are familiar with Kid Chameleon should recognise this. There are 3 on this level!

I am really enjoying this level. I think it has a great story, nice pacing, and a ton of good mechanics.

Couple things:

"Present" day instead of "Presant" day on the first sign.

When you grab the ladder at the apartments and go up in the air to get over the wall, there was no checkpoint right after you get over the wall so if you die, you have to do the ENTIRE climb again. This happened to me twice, so I had to quit (I had to move on to the rest of my play list for the night). I don't know whether there's a technical reason for not having a checkpoint here, but it was kind of a bummer having to do this whole area several times.

I'm going to try to come back to this level later and finish it when I have time.

i see.
this shouldn't be the case, there should be a checkpoint just a tad to the left of the drop down after the wall.

i will sort it for you and thank you for trying! feedback is what it's all about!

I'll check it out again... it may have been there but I may have missed it and wandered to the right. Of course, if I missed it, that's good feedback in itsself .2009-05-08 13:20:00

exactly.
spelling mistake is corrected and checkpoint has been moved to the front of the apartment block owners place.

I also added a plug for lbpcentral

Okay.... feedback, part 2:

I have now finished the level, and here are my thoughts/findings:

First of all, before I start the wall of text let me say I love this level. I think you've done a great job, and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the series as they come.

2nd playthrough:

The drop at the beginning (when you jump into the "start" hole") - somehow I jumped and fell to the left instead of straight down and missed all the text bubbles. Not sure exactly how I did it.

Text - "Due to criminal activity, I cannot get passed" - should be "past".

Muggers in sewer when you drop down to the left of the cars.... I died from the gas on a mugger, but it was right under the checkpoint so I kept spawning and dying quickly until I completely died and had to restart.

3rd playthrough:

This time I found all 3 keys. On the third one, it took me several tries to make the very last jump to get the key. You may want to make the jump SLIGHTLY shorter, because its pretty precision for someone who has never done it before and players could get irritated having to to it over and over again. However, this is a subjective opinion and you can take it with a grain of salt.

After getting all 3 keys, I decided to go back to the bank to get my well-earned points in the bank.... now, here is an interesting judgement call you can make. Just pointing out something that can happen with the Yarg update.... I didn't know the key to the bank was going to be a sticker... I picked up the sticker prize bubble and THEN realized I had the "collect community prizes" turned off... I would personally not suggest suddenly using a sticker to open the door this late in the level since it takes so long to get to this point to suddenly not be able to get the point bubbles. I wanted the bubbles.

4th playthrough:

Ok, I'm getting pretty darned good at the level at this point. I can just about get through it with my eyes closed.

After getting the pieces of the key to the bank, I go to the left and grab the sponge to pull me back up on top of the apartments. The sponge is attached to a piston. I reach the top and swing to the left and jump..... this was interesting - Since the sponge is attached to a piston it got stuck at the top and started following me to the left. The grab sponge ended up on the left side of the wall instead of the right.... then I accidentally touched one of the pieces of toxic waste while heading back to the bank and died.... thus putting me on the RIGHT SIDE OF THE WALL WITH NO WAY TO GET BACK TO THE BANK. I still wanted my point bubbles.

5th playthrough:

Went without a hitch. Actually, by this time I can successfully pet my cat while playing. Got all the way through the level - great ending, by the way. I'm glad I kept at it.

One small thing I noticed - when in the sewer and I grab the sponge on the bottom left to activate the jump on the right, I could clearly see a visible magnetic key and switch to the left.

Thank you for the excellent feedback, those kind of things go unoticed to creators all the time.

1st off, thanks for playing through that many times, much appreciated.

All points have been fixed.

The bank door just opens when you have all keys.
The drop to the intro sequence has been fixed.
Visible switches now not
Spelling corrected again lol
Sewage checkpoint should now be high enough so that you land on top of the sewage container instead of dropping back on the Muggers.
The ride back up to the Blue Angel has now been fixed also.

Again, thanks for feedback! I like your writing style lol.

Cool. Just before I get started you should know that when the level loads it goes straight to a cutscene with a mugger. That happens when you save the game as you trigger it in create mode.2009-05-08 23:12:00

Right I`ve played through it, or at least most of it. If I'm missing out on a huge deal by not getting the bubbles I`'ll give it another go.

First, and I'm sure you`re away of this, is that when you make the main quest optional, and have things like keys quite craftily hidden, you are creating the very real possibility that players will miss just about everything. Had I just played through this after finding it by chance rather than through this website, I probably would`ve just marked it 2 stars, given it a boring tag and forgotten all about it.
I know that the optional stuff is what you`re going for but I`m trying to make you aware that you`re going to get an awful lot of negative tags.

The other thing would be that there`s a lot of backtracking. Between powering up the jumper and having to go back to the bank. I really don`t want those bubbles that much tbh.

Lastly, from a technical standpoint I too had troubles with the ride back up to the Blue Angel. It`s on a loose piston so when I got to the top and swung to the left it went left too rather than back down. When I ran into one of those things the sewer guy drops I was stuck forever more. I'd stick either a platform that lifts you up from the bottom or put the sponge on a winch and let it roll back down.

On the whole I`d say the level didn`t really click with me. I prefer levels that have non stop action. That`s obviously personal preference of course though i`m not suggesting there`s anything wrong with your level having a slower pace, just that it`s not for me.

perfection thank you!

i have to disagree somewhat here, some of your points are intentional on my part.

1st, you learn of three keys by the Blue Angel owner after he tells you, this can't be ignored and therefore this tells you different options are available.

Your backtracking claim is again intentional on my part. I want levels that feel non~linear...think when you arrive at a town in an RPG game.

As for the fact that you think its just for bubbles, you are right but, ive added some prize bubbles too now.

As for the ride back, sorry, you caught the level at a disastrous time, things had randomly disappeared from create mode and made a few things go a bit mental...hence the random cutscene at the start! This was probably due to overheating. All has been fixed now.

Lastly, yes, i did say my level may not please those seeking the type you prefer in my 1st post. This is my preferred type, i go for atmosphere, non~ linear, story filled levels with a bit of depth in them. I strive for originality. This may cost me hearts, stars or what not but, i want a body of work im proud of, so far so good though, i hope others agree with me. My friend says its one of his faves so hopefully i will have a hit on my hands after all the work lol!

Thanks for the feedback, it's exactly what i wanted to hear from an action fan!

Thanks for playing,

Just want to throw in, I personally really dig this kind of level, even though I also love other more action-filled levels. This level, to me, was definately more of an RPG experience than an arcade one. If you like these kind of more open-ended types, you should check out RangerZero's "Sack's in the City". Very similar feel to it (but both are definately totally original concepts).2009-05-09 00:19:00

i'm glad you didn't take offence to what i said. i wasn't saying your levels was poor or anything, just not for me. as much as i prefer more action orientated levels, i do think it's a good premise and will definitely play the rest in the series wheh they're done.2009-05-09 01:12:00

Thanks for the kind words, i'm going to try Rangers level.

I played your Splat Invaders Saga level and loved it! I like action too sometimes and this was a fun minigame type. The boss surprised me! Going to play your others soon and comment in the threads if there are some.

Matt: no problem bud, you gave me your constructive opinion and there isn't anything wrong with that, i will be excited to hear what you have to say next...and to play your new levels.

EDIT: Sacks in the City is one of the best levels ever, one of my very few 5 star levels! I think it took me about an hour!

Now added a "Good or Bad 'O' Metre" at the end of the level to help you get a better idea for things. (took way to long to think through and make...all for something you will spend a minute looking at! lol)

you also get rewarded for the good now.

Ok, I've just finished playing through your level and it really is a step in a good direction for new gameplay ideas. The whole freeroaming idea is completely new, but you've implemented it in a very good and original way. Kudos.

Pros:
+The design of the muggers
+That little spark of humour
+Lots of replay value
+Excellent look to the city
+Lots of other things to do, besides the main quests
+The Good or Bad 'o' meter

Cons:
-Some people will ignore it because you don't have to do some things

Overall I rated it 4 stars and can't wait for Act 2

i love the Pros and Cons reviews, there short and to the point!

Thanks for the critique.
The Muggers were given suits because to me, the biggest Mugger of all is a man in a suit offering you a CONtract...there the ones ruining our world over greed...its just a personal touch lol.

The amount to do is only a taster of whats to come (if the thermometer lets it be!!)

The look (and actually everything to do with the level) is supposed to be neutral, in between. As if to say, its acceptable and it's not. Sister has an attitude, Mother is reckless but, still caring...the fact that it is only Mother, scruffy but livable neighborhood...that kind of thing. Just how we are today in life, the future is an uncertainty.

As for the con...well, it's a risk but, things wouldn't ever change or be exciting without risks would they? If i end up poorly rated, so be it! I can have my small fanbase! lol!

Thank you for playing coxy

I finally played your level tonight. It was pretty good!
You have some real nice effect at the end and I couldn't even figure out how you did it (I mean, from the top of my head).
It felt open but I didn't really know what I missed. I know that it wasn't all the lights that were lit at the end and it's like I was stuck because no door ever opened and I had to quit the level...

Anyhow, I hearted it and I will play it again as well as the second act. It's really cool. Keep it up!

Hey Ranger.

well, i think not telling you what you missed is what should be done? hmm...

You are told that there are 3 keys to collect and that is all there is to the side stuff so, you are told. whether you think there is anything more is probably due to the share size of the level.

*Act 2 is no more, TIME is scrapped.

Oh and to add to my before post, i will tell you all what inspired me so that you know a bit more about my work.

If any of you are familiar with Team Silent's work like Silent Hill and Shadow of Memories and appreciate them for the art ala atmosphere and symbolic storytelling, should know what i'm talking about.

Towards the end of a Silent Hill for example, it would give off this really emotional, climatic weird feel...slow ambient music would play over dramatic and bizarre scenes. It's not the feeling i want in a lbp level obviously lol but, thats the type of atmosphere i am talking about...its very prominent.

I like slow moving, plot filled, artistic things, loaded with atmosphere when it comes to games or movies. Obviously i'm not doing that with lbp haha but it can give you an idea of the author and why some things are how they are

Really liked this level. It's a great idea for a story and based on your intro screen with all the different time references I'm fully expecting more to follow.

I love the concept that what you do affects the future actions of the level. Really interesting.

I played it a few times but each time I couldn't get to the scoreboard. I know I'm missing something but I couldn't get behind the meters. lol

This level was pretty cool. You definitely created an rpg vibe and I enjoyed the ability to make moral decisions. The free roaming aspect was nice, but there were a few moments where I was unsure of what to do next. In particular, I completely missed the ladders dropping by the hotel somehow and spent the next few minutes trying to rob the bank before finally heading back toward the hotel and seeing the ladder. But the rest of the time, I found my way just fine. The portal effects at the end were super cool!

EDIT: Accidently hit the post button. Anyway, I enjoyed the level and my only recommendation would be to add a few more details to some of the longer hallways. Nice job, I look forward to the tweaks you add to this version and future versions.

As stated in "A step back in time" thread:

After months of trying to develop my unique idea for a game called 'TIME' (to those that remember), i have decided against it as each level would be wasted and may not get played (due to the progression rule) so, instead i am revamping some episodes as a single level experience but, with all the decision making and multiple activities still intact.

So, without further delay, i present 'Modern Times'

Description now on the edited very 1st post.
