Portal

I never saw a topic for this (but correct me if I am wrong). Portal is probably the greatest game ever. I bought it months ago and just got around to playing and beating it. How can they sell it for a mere $10.00?!? It confounds me truly. This was truly my best gaming experience and have even committed my sack boy (or girl I suppose) to Chell's likeness. Ah... I LOVE this game.2009-05-06 22:16:00

I love portal! I got it with the Orange Box for ps3. It's really fun, but it's pretty short. I wish it were longer. I CAN'T WAIT TILL PORTAL 2 COMES OUT!!!!2009-05-06 23:02:00

Yeah, Portal is probably one of my favorite games this generation. It's short, but oh so sweet! The puzzles with the portals are fantastic and the way that the narrative is told is pure genius. The writing on the walls, GlaDos and her strange (but humorous) remarks, and the ending, all elevate Portal from a simply puzzle game into something very special.2009-05-06 23:13:00

Ya I love portal. I wish they would've made a much bigger game out of it. But It's deff one of my favorites, very unique and clever with great game play and a good mental work out too.2009-05-07 00:23:00

Yup, I'll also agree with this. Portal has to me one of the most enjoyable games i've played, and it's a great show piece to people who haven't seen it.2009-05-07 00:57:00

You are not a gamer if you haven't played portal.

It's just THAT GOOD. Sadly, once you play it all and know how to do the puzzles, it loses it's charm but you know, still amazing. GlaDos is just fantastic.

I highly recommend people to play the game with developers commentary on. It's truly fascinating on how they thought through every detail of a chamber and how they used the 1. Tutorial 2. Consolidate approach to chambers. The woman who voiced GLaDOS is a wonder to listen to. She hasn't actually played videogames before (YEs, not even Portal) but she wants to she says.

This game is just a must play!

And to quote GLaDOS:
"Please note that we have added a consequence for failure. Any contact with the chamber floor will result in an "unsatisfactory" mark on your official testing record, followed by death. Good luck!"
"That thing is probably a raw sewage container. Go ahead and rub your face ALL OVER it."
"Momentum, a function of mass and velocity, is conserved between portals. In layman's terms, speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out."
"Maybe you should marry that thing since you love it so much. Do you want to marry it? Well I won't let you! How does that feel?"
"Have I lied to you? [pause] I mean, in this room?"

Portal is great fun, even if it is short. I suggest playing it, but if its cheaper rent the orange box for it as it isn't long enough to warrant owning it, imo.2009-05-07 18:31:00

I have to disagree with echonian. The Orange Box is only 20 dollars* and it comes with Half Life 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. Plenty of replay value for 20 dollars*

Word on the street is their going to cross portal and half life. Like a gravity gun that also shoots portals.

That would be sweet. I lub portal.

You will be baked, and there will be cake.

Eh? 0.o The orange box is one of the best deals going. Half Life 2, Ep 1, Ep2 is worth the purchase on it's own. Having Portal their is just awesome beyond. TF2... well... fun to try out xD

I didn't like the half like games much, honestly. But then again, I never got into the modding community for the games if there was one (I believe there was).

Portal was awesome, though. TF2 was...good, not the best.

This has got to be one of the best games ever. I am just at the part after you
Get almost burned up by GLaDOS
and am in the machinery. This game is so awesome! Too bad I saw the entire plot. Spoilers are so hard to miss these days.
My mother watched me play it and actually helped me a little.
I'm playing this on the PS3, as i just got the orange box.
EDIT: Just finished it. I was surprised how short it was, but is up on my personal top ten. The boss fight wasn't that good, but i died twice, before I realized
You had to put the cores in a portal ABOVE THE INCINERATOR.

Yes, I am bumping this thread, there's no need to make a new one if there already is.

Awesome game! One of my favorites, but how do you make your own maps? I must know!

You can make your own maps with the 'Hammer SDK' editor, which you can get for just owning a game that uses the Source engine. You should be able to find it by searching within Steam. Just a word of caution, it is quite a step up from trying to make levels/maps in LBP. It's much more technical, and you will need to familiarize yourself with the some coding.

And do you know where to get levels made by others?

Source SDK isn't in the tools section where people say it is. It must be the free portal thing that is messing it up.

I have no idea how to check if the free portal gives you the SDK or not since I also bought Half-Life 2 when it first came out so I get to use the editor.

I just beat all the advanced maps and challenges... wheW

Uhhhhh... Anyone do the challenge maps?

I just tried to do the first one, tried "least portals" ... it keeps telling me I cheated and won't give me a medal!!! Is it because those dev commentary things are floating around? Help?

EDIT - Ok, got it. Yeah, if you started commentary mode, you have to start a fresh game to turn it off before you can do the challenges.
