*Special thanks to Sackboy223 for recording his play through of the following videos*

YouTube - Little Big Duty: Naptime (Part 1)

(The rest of the level is on Sackboy223's channel, but I rather have you play the level instead of watching it so get out there and search it up!)

I was a huge contra fan growing up and then metal slug came out and it took my breathe away. It was these games that taught me how to play videogames in general simply because these games rely on recognizing patterns, memorization, and timing.

http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k323/fusionboxer/APhoto_3-1.jpg

With this level I decided to give a nod to games like Metal Slug and Contra, which focused on run and gun action with a bit of platforming thrown in for good measure. Consider this a kind of stand alone from the rest of the series as I'm going in a new direction.

http://i324.photobucket.com/albums/k323/fusionboxer/APhoto_2-1.jpg

Those are some pics so you know what your about to play. I didn't post the latter part of the level (like the boss) because I dont really want to spoil much, but hope you enjoy it! This one allows play for more then just 2 people unlike Return to Arms and really delivers on that run and gun feel. I haven't started work on the next level yet, but the idea is in my head and I look forward to delivering it to you guys.

Hope you enjoy it and I look forward to reading your comments either in little big planet or on here.

I'll be definitely giving this ago... I'll be back with some feedback in the next hour...

Edit...

13hrs later...

Hey man, just played your level... Truly awesome... Your definitely on the right track with these levels, I remember playing some of your early ones before... And from what I can remember this one was alot better... Enjoyed the helicopter bosses and the main boss at the end, very nice...

The overall theme of the level was great and really liked how everything was put together... Nice work man, look forward to more from you...

Oh and one little negative I didn't like... Which is in some areas I could see your switches and even with the first building you exit, I can see your little mag key setup above the building... I'm guessing you might wanna hide that... But yeah other than that, nice level man... Great work...

OK, so the final boss was great, loved that. The helicopters you can actually take out from a distance if you angle the paintinator right, so maybe hide the tail a bit better so it cant be shot like this? Also, the main enemies were great too, loved that you could either kill them with the gun or by "hand to hand".
Thought in some places it was a touch repetitive, though this is minor. Also, at the beginning where you have to shoot the debris to cross the water, this should be a bit clearer, because I had to think for a second before i realized what to do.
Good level, 5 stars.

Hey dude it's YOU! I thought u gave up on LBP when u made ur 4th CoD level.
I'm the guy that's holding 1# on the scoreboard.

Well anyways:
This level doesn't have such a serious atmosphere as your previous levels. It's more of a toy box shooter. I liked it.

Things that bugged me:
The soldiers this time were better looking then those in your 4th Cod level but I liked the older model better. Headshot=kill...
You still have a little multi-path in your level but not so much like in your past. In the past you could go on the roofs or on the floor.
At some point, at the first car ride (not the truck at the beginning) the camera zooms out so you can see a little empty space. Just try to fix that.

Don't get this wrong, I really loved your new level (5 stars & heart) but this are some things that bugged me.

I`m not normally into these kinds of shooter levels but that video looked so good! Anyway I`ll go through any problems I had during the level.

- Just after the truck ride, you fall down a hole into a checkpoint. My momentum kept me going here and a cutscene started so I was killed by the big flaming block during the cutscene.
- Just after you jump up the pillars (the first one has the 'X' on it). I jumped up only to die as I landed on fire as I`d jumped up and left. Maybe a camera angle when you get to the last one, or even an invisible wall? I saw the arrow but didn`t realise I was to take it so literally.
- Just after the armour guy, the dude on the roof under the chopper was lying upside down when I got up to him.

Those things apart, I loved it. Great design, never boring and an amazing boss. I`m going to check out all your other levels just shortly. 5 stars and hearted from me.

Thanks guys for all your feedback (i'd love some more!). So far I went into the level and did what I could without breaking it due to the thermometer being completely gone. Basically I addressed most if not all of your issues save for the comment about a shooter having a bit too much shooting, which I tried hard to eliminate by providing the player new enemies, mini bosses here and there along with vehicle sections and platforming to break things up a bit. I'll take that feedback though for work on the next level.

Anyway I hid some of the switches and made larger ground areas so that you can't see anything below the city. I also made an invisible wall to the left when you jump up so you don't accidentally hop into the fire. Other then that I can't really fix the guy on top of the roof.

Reason is because he's some sort of ghost character. I went into create mode and he wasn't there, but when I play through the level he appears there. When I start at a certain point and look for him he's not there and I even tried to play two player in create mode to have a friend fly over there and wait and he never came.

The ghost soldier is on to us...

That`s a bit bizarre! Do you emit soldiers at any point? Maybe you copied a shape with an emitter on it and he comes out?2009-05-08 22:04:00

OK here we go...

1st impression: Cool opener! Like the war feel going on. Love the movement.

Love the vehicles.
Really like your use of story to make the obstacles relevant.
Very cool light pattern that is being projected on the wall after the guy tells you you can 'jump in' an enemy to kill them.

Went into the house with the broken front wall without a paint-gun had to kill myself to get out of it

Went back in got to the top floor shot the burning stuff to reveal an exit. Went out the red X is on the balcony (there is an exposed emitter here...dont know if you meant that)

(The bombs the Heli drops look great (so does the Heli!) but the red thats on them ends in the middle exposing dissolve on the back half)

So second Heli much harder...but...with infinite lives guess I don't really have to worry. Which bothers me because you just took all of the challenge out of it.
Second Big tank thing...again...I don't have to worry. Shoot dissolve on front and the tracks came off it.

So the modified jeep looks cool and I think it great you give direction for extra players.

Love the Plane! Your vehicles are great!

Hummm well now I'm fighting the secret weapon...couldnt figure out what to do...got in just the right spot and took out the bottom paint switch section of it and it has stopped firing at me and my paint-gun wont fire...

OK that was strange...as soon as I deleted some of the stickers it started working...no I get off a couple shoots and it stops...

Restarting...ok everything worked fine this time.

Well that was a fun adventure. I am really not a fan of war/shoot em ups but I really enjoyed this!

Matt: Ok i figured it out after being a bit creeped out about it. I mean how is this soldier appearing up here and in some cases standing perfectly upright, buts till burnt to a crisp? What burnt him and why is he still alive and shooting?

The answer soon came.

After some messing around I discovered that after you blow up the car next to the soldier there is some crazy glitch that teleports him from ALLLL the way down on the street level to the top of this roof. It's pretty crazy. I had no idea until I noticed that he was burnt. The only way for me to fix this is to leave him be, but I don't really mind it because I think its a little funny. If anything i'll add a speech bubble on him connected to a magnetic switch that makes him say "ouch" or something if he happens to make it to the roof like what you and I saw multiple times.

Thanks AJ for your feedback as well.

I understand that you may not feel challenged because of the infinite checkpoints, but I felt they were needed because ultimately I didn't want to punish inexperienced players for trying out my level. I wanted them to go on an adventure and come to a satisfying conclusion. Like Matt's said before I feel like the challenge is still there without having the player completely restart the level.

Also since my level is a bit long I think it'd be terrible to make someone restart halfway through.

As for the treads coming off. I wanted it to look like you've damaged it before the final two blows. I was going to do more, but unfortunately it would have caused problems or eliminated any of the hazards coming from it.

And for your experience with the boss. Did you ever finish the level? I'm curious because I was hoping people would have issues at first, but eventually figure things out. I mean i did prop up those gigantic grab switches to give off a hint and make all the vital points for victory red.

Other then that I'm sorry about the glitch. That's never happened to me before and I wonder if there is anything I can do to fix it.

Your direction for the Tank with grab switches was fine I just didn't push the explosives up to him. I was standing back shooting and got right in a crack and was able to shoot the bottom section. When i went back I figured it out and everything worked like it should (I guess)

Yes I did finish.

Don't think I had a negative experience because I didn't.

Your Helli's were pretty bad ***. I doubt I would have gotten them with a double checkpoint. It was just that during those fights I just kind went crazy and ran around and didn't worry to much...which really wasn't all that bad!

So it is all good!

I share his pain. Being woken from a nap makes me go on a killing spree too.

Pros:
+Nice enemies
+Tricky boss
+Great level setup.

Cons:
-Too many infinite lives checkpoints.

It's really well done, I give it 4 stars and tagged it "Mechanical"

Keep up the good work.

It's great to hear that blizzard! I'm pretty sure he's just looking at it so that he can learn from things and make an even better level. I usually play levels I like while I'm creating for a tiny bit of inspiration as well.

Except in most cases i'll just play the games I love outside of Little Big Planet and let those level influence me.

But yea I'd love more feedback for whoever pops into this thread. Like I said I F4F and since i'm working on my next level already it wouldn't be bad to take feedback from here and put that towards the next one.

I liked this... I'm also a huge Metal Slug fan, and love old school sidescrolling platformer shooters in general. You managed to incorporate alot of nostalgic stuff into it, that reminded me of some of the best levels and bosses in the original game (Metal Slug 2: Mission 5), but also merged it with alot of what makes LBP interesting from the MGS pack. Great work, a nice long level, with lots of explosives and fun - lots of minibosses and enemies, and some good level design with the multiple pathways, and the paint switched rubble. The final boss had a cool strategy behind it too.

If you get a chance, check out my old Metal Slug Solid level or Contra if you never played any of those. I know you'll dig them being an old school shooter fan.

Thank you guys so much for the feedback. I'm trying my best to incorporate what you guys liked about this one into my next level, but I'm almost certain it won't be out for a while. I've been away from my ps3 for a bit, but I can't wait to hop on and try your guy's levels. I'll post my feedback in your respective threads asap!

PS. I watched videos of your level morgana and it looks absolutely beautiful. Very excited. Also Ninja I remember playing one of your levels during my initial research. Basically i wanted to play some of the other metal slug shooters out already and your level popped up. I'll go play the other ones though. I can't wait!

I love old shooters like contra, and metal slug. I even have a neo geo arcade machine, with a couple of metal slug games. When I saw your level in the spotlight I had to give it a go. I was very pleased with the job you've done on this. So far to date this is my favorite "shooting" level. Keep it up. GREAT WORK!!!!

could you give me feedback on (mountain marathon) thanks.
