Sonnet of the Gargoyle, made with Morgana25, PICS, TRAILER, and SPOTLIGHTED!!!

Archive: 47 posts

Introduction

Finally, the level you have all (hopefully) been waiting for, "Sonnet of the Gargoyle" by Dkjestrup and Morgana25. I made this level when I wanted a break from my "Legend of Maui" levels. I PMed Morgana25 and asked if she wanted to help on a little side project. She was interested, and that was that. Basically, most of you will be asking how we did it. I basically made the level (not to take credit) and asked Morgana25 whenever I needed a Gargoyle/Enemy to be made, as that is her specialty.

The level is set in an Ancient French Palace/Garden type setting, hence its production name "Le Grande Jardin". You play as a school teacher, James Watterson, who discovers this beautiful palace hidden in the countryside. The story is fairly loose, if at all, as I decided we'd focus on gameplay. The level basically involves small puzzles and platforming. The visual style is nice and simple. I could have made it more "grassy like" if the thermometer was twice as big, but cannot at the moment. I have NO thermometer left. As in, another gargoyle or rock and it explodes. I would've added another AND gate, so a certain speech bubble doesn't display when you've already done the puzzle, but I couldn't fit it in

There is also a Challenge level, if you find the key

Here is a teaser video:

I will do F4F ONLY on those that give extensive feedback, no "Played it, liked it, hearted. Now F4F me!!!" as that doesn't help me at all. IF I FORGET REMIND ME!! I have a tendancy to forget

EDIT: Seems I forgot something. Thankyou Randofu for your logic gates, Maraz_Matari for your talking tool, Mrsupercomputer, Jaedyen, Morgana25 and everyone else that playtested! And THANKYOU VANEMIERA FOR YOUR VIDEO

Thoughts as they happen:

- Looks good. That gargoyle is gorgeous.
- Your stereo is visible, is it meant to be? That goes for the many switches on show now that I get a better look at the level.
- If you run along the top of the arm that swings you up, you can see a spotlight.
- Just before you get on the lift (ascend to heaven) there`s a set of steps with a chair at the top. It`s not glued down and when I jumped upstairs and onto it, it fell down stairs, got stuck and forced me to pop.
- It`s not always too clear where to go. During the race part I was often wondering where I should be heading next. There are camera cuts for most big things but there were one or two times where I wasn`t sure if I was on the right trail. That may be intentional though.
- On the thing that tells you to have mercy on the eve of victory, theres a set of spikes on its nose, obscured by a sign. I felt that was a rather cheap death.
- I was 2 seconds away from saying it was an underwhelming ending. Well done, great pay off. Though I think I may have done something bad by killing the scorpion thingies.

Overall, a very good level. Never boring, pretty to look at, just challenging enough, excellent character design and inventive.

5 stars and hearted.

Just played (and rated it ;p) twice. Currently have 1st and 2nd place woohoo! XD

Very nice level, the visual is great. Props to Morgana on her mad gargoyle creating skills. (not that you didn't make a great level too, DK ;p)

The overall look of the level is great, and i liked how it was overall a race with some backtracking. Some interesting platforming (like the bouncing spike jumps hilighted in the video), but also some that wasn't so inspired (a few different versions of the same "pull the platform" puzzle are in there). None of it seemed terribly difficult to me though, but i guess it must have been to some as before i played it the average was 2 stars

I wasn't quite sure why you made the key switches visible. I thought that was a little odd. I could understand a bit for the rock you have to match up... but, i wasn't sure why the doors had to be visible (or the dissolve was still green for that matter).

It was funny, your level splits up in a few different places, but i always (randomly) was able to pick the path i was meant to go on first, making those puzzle speeches show up bummer theres no space... maybe it'll show up later.

I liked how there were two different endings... but i felt that the "good" ending was kind of meek in the reward. Personally, the "bad" ending was more fulfilling just for the cool effects

Noticed a little "bug"- the tree branch on the right of the lift in the temple place, it isn't glued down. Also, in your description, i think you forgot the word "As" at the very beginning (read the first sentance aloud, you'll get what i mean).

Is there only one key in the level? for some reason the one i found didn't work for me... i've had that happen before. guess i can't play your challenge, bummer =/

Overall, great visuals (not a surprise after seeing the detail you put into your Maui level ), but the gameplay was a little easy for my tastes (sorry, i can be a tough critic). 4* x2.

Oooohh.. A 4 star? I hate you!! [/sarcasm]

Thanks guys, feedback has been good so far, and the level has a 1:3 h2p ratio and a 4 star rating, my personal best. Now to keep republishing.

I will glue stuff down when I get the chance.

Glad you liked the ending, I prefer the evil one my self. I may see what I can do for the good one, fire works or something . You can thank Vanemiera for the ending, I had a sub-par ending, but He/She told me it was boring

Always end on a high note!

Lol! :hero:

We were planning on having two or more boss battles, but couldn't fit them in. Originally I wanted a boss between each area, but I ran out of ideas. Who knows, if we ever (not saying ) made a sequel, we'd make lots of bosses

I can imagine a sequel having more indoors-like areas, like at the end, but grander

Played it, liked it, hearted. Now F4F me!!!
Still waiting......
Fine ten I'll give you extensive feeback

This level astounded me when I first saw the video (ok, I only saw it yesterday but still....) I couldn't wait to play this and then I find out it's ready. And I was not disappointed at all. Brilliant puzzles, thousands of secrets and some lovely artwork.

Pros:
+The gargoyles are lovely
+All the enemies are great
+The puzzles are good
+Just the right length
+So many secrets
+A bonus level! (If you find the key, which I did)
+Just everything really

Cons:
-The final "boss" doesn't do much
-In the palace there is a tree root that isn't stuck down (on the first floor on the right hand side.

I understand the thermo is why the last gargoyle couldn't do much and really I was just looking as hard as I could for a con - this level really is beautiful. Creator hearts for you and Morgana25 along with a heart fo both this level and the challenge level. Just superb!

What do you want feedback for? Because I believe I've already left feedback on "Coasting in the Jungle".

Lol, I realise the boss doesn't do much. The problem with my thermo is "unlgued parts", and bosses use loads. I decided I could either make a rubbish, rushed boss, or make cute guardians that don't really put up a fight lol.

Thank you for the heart!

I can now get back to "The Legend of Maui", which you asked about :hero:

Awesome job dkjestrup and morganna25! I had only seen about 2/3 rds of this level until tonight because of that key bug. Fantastic job finishing it up.

Well, most of my cons have been noted already by people above me. I don't think you need any visible switches besides the one on the rock, and that goes for the challenge level too. Burnvictim42 couldn't have said it any better about the level splitting up but always finding the right path. My first few plays, I felt lost sometimes...but always seemed to find my way after a while. I wonder if subtle changes with the GLT in different areas of the race map might make it feel like things aren't so familiar or even considering some different decorations in different areas as visual cues? The hidden areas are great, and I don't know how easy..or hard it would be to add some prize bubbles in those spots behind the walls, but I kind of felt like there was no pay off to finding those areas.

Overall it's a great level. It feels really big. It's built solid. It has some great challenges but it should be accessible to all levels of players. Tons of platforming mixed with a race, a story and some puzzles keeps the flow going all the way through. The art and look of the level is really cool and it was progressively more fun as I got better with each play through. Congratulations, and a job well done. I loved the finish and now that I know there's another one, I'm off to see it.

Awesome Level!!

Ok I'll start on the only thing I disliked about this level... The race... Ok, it wasn't that bad, it's not like I have to race against the time or anything, but it sort of distracts me from enjoying the great visuals and layout of the level... I don't know if it's just me, but that's just how I feel, if you were to get rid of that, then at least people can enjoy the level without feeling like they aren't allowed to stand there and look around, they gotta run, and miss out on all the greatness this has to offer...

If you can understand that, then I guess that's it really...

Now for the good...

Great visuals, great layout, and loved the look of the temple and gargoyles themselfs... Nice ending too, was freaking out, thinking I gotta prepare my self for some fighting to do... But oh well, all good...

Overall great level, and loved the work you 2 have done...!

I played this over the weekend,.. I loved the level... And thought I gave feedback on it... But don't see my comments here... Is there another thread? (or am I just a retard?)

My only big issue was the hoping columns you need to jump on with the spikes overhead... I had a really hard time with this section.

Look wise, I thought was amazing. You have a really good level here, you need to push for cool levels with this one.

The puzzles were cool as heck.
And the gargoyles were AWESOME!

Now I know who to bug to help me with bosses and stylish items.

5/5/heart on this one.

i hated it.
Kidding!

graphically, even though simple looking, it was amazing and i loved the lighting effects.
it was quite easy platforming, but i thought it was more of an experience than a challenge. i like the backtracking and puzzles were well executed.
i also liked how everyhting was near perfecly squared-off or symmetrical looking (did you use a grid for the entire level?)
music was cool and suited the relaxed way of the level.
i cant really think of anything i didnt like.... a bit more story would be nice.
also i must applaud your use of mechanics and such ( i too learned from logic gates. did you make your own gates from scratch or copy them?)
i got the bad ending (its kinda obvious to me why i got it) and liked the flashing and the rumbling and the evilness. twas cool.
a lengthy level which keeps a fun pace throughout, i would recomend it to loads of people.
(i also liked the challenge level, i think it fills the difficulty gap for the main level, it was kind of easy)

is this good enough feedback?
if so do please give honest feedback on my level Hunt for lord dread: dread mansion (part1) its my newest so i want more Feedback on it than my other two

Just played through this final version and was pleasantly surprised to find a lot of great additions to the beta level that I tested!

Highlights:
- Great gargoyle statues and visuals. It would have been nice to have a grassier look, but I really think it's fine how it is. Nice and clean.
- Fun puzzles and platforming. With the exception of the secret area at the beginning, I never had any frustrating jumps. All the puzzles were fun, simple, and flowed nicely. They never caused me to become stuck in one area too long.
- Lots of hidden prize and point bubbles!
- The energy flowing down the wall in one of the puzzles was very cool!

Suggestions:
- Other posters have pointed it out, but I would also advise you to hide your switches. They really stand out in such a beautiful, natural setting. The only one that I see as necessary, is the one on the rock at the beginning, but if you could find a way to hide it and still give the player a clue, it'd be great.

Other than that I really enjoyed it. Well done you two!

So yeah, I posted a little comment on the level itself, but I'll post a little here.

It's an amazingly attractive looking level, all platforms and decorations smoothed out perfectly to create a perfect effect. But this level definitely isn't just a pretty face, it is incredibly fun and incredibly challenging when attempting to reach a high score. This is an all-rounder, and I knew even after watching the video that it was top score worthy.

I so suck at giving level reviews but I'll try to help and give some suggestions

I'll type as I play, here goes...

-- Attempt 1 --

1. The Gargoyles are real cool, but I'd fix the cut-scene camera on the first one to show the the whole gargoyle and not just its feet. It would make for a more dramatic cut-scene IMO.

2. I'm loving the visuals

3. There is a key showing on the grab-rock, maybe though that is to make the level fool-proof?

4. when you take the rock to the left and the ramp falls into place, nicely done. You carved a hole into it as a means to return, but you don't need to use that hole. Where the ramp is bolted to the structure, you can jump down there. Maybe that was intentional

5. I died I backtracked and took the tree-sticker route and couldn't get past the spike room. Note: I have a 3 year old son who is CONSTANTLY interrupting me, so bare with me. Also he has removed 1/4 of the keys from my laptop so typing this really sucks. I need a new keyboard bad
-- what I would suggest could help the frustration of this spike are would be to replace the ceiling spikes with point bubbles and/or speed-lights. There is still pleanty of danger here with the floor spikes and missed-jumps; getting thrown up really made this part frustrating for me.

-- Attempt 2 --

1. Avoiding the spike area this time, I like that you added the level close-gate further into the first areas. Liked the switch up above the hanging platforms, though I was thinking I needed to get the brown rock-object from earlier for the door that the switch above opens.

2. Like the hanging platforms, they're neat!

3. Ok... I've been playing for a while since #2 because I'm in the race. I got a time-score of 0 (I suck, lol). It is a doable race easily, I just got confused and lost ad all looped up. I think the race would be more fun if it were more fool proofed by adding arrows. It gets frustrating when you do an LBP race and get lost in the middle. My Mazed and Confused levels clearly demonstrate this (though I designed those with the sole pupose of frustrating the player).

I did like the race though, especially the moving islands. Maybe some more sound effects could be used troughout the race too.

4. Right where it says, "Ascend to the heavens..." there was a chair at the top of the stairs that killed me when I grabbed it and moved it. That's just my dumb-luck though.

5. the root down below this area eeds glue, and the checkpoint at the top needs glue as well, I dragged a chair form the large table setting and it bumped the checkpoint sending it rolling down the hall.

6. That was a cool animated cut-scene with the key.

7. The ending with the earthquake was the best part of the level IMO. I am soooo going to steal this idea

+ gargoyles
+ smooth gameplay
+ lots of places to explore
+ some inovative concepts
+ earthquake scene was excellent
+ some secret area that are really hard to find so increased replayablitiy

- needs more sound effects
- needs a couple more materials used (for the finer details)
- led lights can look good even in daytime contitions, but I felt you guys could have done more with the lighting. But you DID do more with the lighting than alot of people would so it's not a big complaint
- a little repetitive at times, but this also helps to make it a larger level.

Overall a 8/10 4 stars and a heart.

Hope some of this helps you to polish the level.

The spike part, you do realise you can grab the grass right? Lol. I may have to put an "r1" sticker there to make it obvious

Funny thing - first time I play tested it - I forgot too. I guess the concept "hang on" doesn't occur to some of us when we're on a flat surface heading up.

lol. I will see, but the sponge isn't very thick, so it may be hard to see.

In on topic news, I've republished the level, changing the Good ending.

Also, anyone think I should put snoring sound effects by the gargoyles?

Yeah I loved it and like everyone said you may want to hide the switches, although personally i didn't find it too bad. Considering that most people go on about it. I only got to play half the level due to the fact that with the part with the elevator in the palace place and the very dim lighting I couldn't get out! DARN! Overall it does look incredibly lush and detailed. And as some others said I always managed to get the right path from the start. YAAY! I'll give more feedback when (and if) I get past the freakin' elevator. GRRR2009-05-06 20:43:00

Thanks for the great feedback guys

EDIT: I've tried to fix the elevator, dunno wtf is happening. If you have any problems PLEASE tell me and don't rate it low cause of it. Sorry guys.

Now I'm at 77 hearts and 850 or so plays, page 4 cool levels.

I'm reasonably happy with that effort. I have until Tuesday on cool levels too!

Now I know how to launch levels

4 stars, 1:11 or so H2P, 850 plays.... good.

If you wanna know how I published, basically I PMed about 6-7 LBPC users, posted here and Gamefaqs WITH PICS AND A VIDEO and republished about 30 times for extra plays.

OK just writing as I play...

1st impression:
Like the material and of course love the gargoyles!

Don't like seeing the radio right at the beginning. Very out of place. (but thats just me) I have to agree with the others about the green dissolve with the mag keys or switches on them, It should be stickered...it just looks out of place.
Like the layout.

Don't like that we start racing and you tell me I need to look around for something to awaken the gargoyle...So I will ignore the race clock...but it's loud and distracting.

OK I'm feeling very confused...after the elevator ride up..I have the gargoyle on the resting spot...key moved into place...do I jump in the key or go somewhere else because it opened a door...if it did maybe a sound or camera cue would help.

OK just stumbled on the 'open door'

Earthquake is Awesome!

OK this is very mixed for me...

I love the look, materials, layout, platforming elements, and puzzles.

BUT

I wish once I had gotten the task done for the puzzle that I knew where to go. I think because your material was the same for walls and doors I didn't realize there was a door blocking my way...I just thought it was a wall. I also was kinda annoyed with the music. I really liked the mellower parts but when it would go crazy (i.e. getting louder and adding all the instruments) I found it also very distracting.

Don't think this is all bad as it isn't. I really liked alot of your stuff. And you have more hearts and plays than I do, so who am I to say...I was just telling you what I like...take it or leave it

I gave it 4 stars and a Puzzler Tag

Now THIS was an awesome level. I'll list the pros and cons:

Pros:
- The visuals are great. It gives you a great first impression.
- It has a simple yet nice storyline.
- It's very multipath, I like that.
- Having secret areas was a good idea.
- Has quite a lot of backtracking (that's a bonus for me).
- Solid platforming elements.
- The gargoyles have a very nice design.
- Simple yet nice puzzles that keep you moving.
- The earthquake at the end was an awesome effect.

Cons:
- The chairs, tables and even the checkpoint after the lift aren't connected to the floor.
- Some wobble bolts, motor bolts are visible and would best be invisible.

Overall 5 stars and heart! Looking forward to your next level!

I was just playing this again for extra score (got around the 3rd spot). ANyway, I really liked the way switches were visible and so were other things, it made it seem more Mm style. And it worked really well 2009-05-12 19:03:00

Visible switches make sense, if it serves a purpose IMO. People leave visible paint switches all the time. Mag switches can look cool on mechanical/electrical devices. It all depends on the context in which a visible switch is used. The only switch I thought looked out of place was the mag switch on the rock. The other ones were fine.2009-05-13 08:13:00

I think visible switches only work with the right art style. This level had that perfectly. It wasn't quite Mm style, but a sort of MmDK style........
The point is, visible switches worked here!
