Spectator Mode

Archive: 18 posts

When you go to invite/join someone from your menu, there could be a button that says "Spectate." If you click it, it would ask the person "rhansen2 wants to spectate you." They could click yes or no and continue doing whatever.
This would be really useful for making machinimas and if someone was working on a highly anticipated level, a bunch of people could watch them build it.
I guess you could do Create Mode classes with it as well.

OnLive's only being supported by third party companies, though.
Not Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo.

Sadly, Onlive is only for PC games I think.

Also, great idea Sack-Jake.

I'm not sure about watching people create (or is it only people on your contacts list?), but other than that, it sounds awesome.2009-05-03 19:12:00

The demo I saw was on a PS3. They were playing Burnout and Prologue.

Nope, Onlive is only for PC games.

Anyways, back on topic. This is a REALLY neat idea, i wouldn't mind watching people create. I always get kinda bored sometimes.
Or maybe when online create comes out, there can be some kind of "Ghost Create Mode" where only the host can make actual changes to the level while everyone else does what they, not seen by anyone else.

On topic:
I think that would be a useful addition - you could potentially have 4 players and extra spectators, if the network can support it (not sure if it can).

Off topic:

Well, it would be stupid for Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo to support Onlive as it's a direct competitor - if it works the way it's supposed to, it removes the need for a console in the home. That's not something they'd want to support. However, Onlive has the support of lots of game developers and other game-related companies because it makes things easier on devs - the developers could develop for one architecture (which is also the most affordable one for the consumer), and the developer doesn't really have to worry about toning things down to keep the game running smoothly. It's a developer's dream - now, if Onlive works the way it's supposed to when it launches, then you'll see Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony getting worried and making changes to keep the console attractive.

Nope, Onlive is only for PC games.

Onlive isn't "for PC games", it's a completely different beast. It's one architecture - meaning, the developer doesn't have to consider the thousands of possible hardware configurations, they can develop for that specific architecture. Onlive is for any game that the developer feels like converting a game to - right now, PC games are coming first because it's easiest to convert a PC game to Onlive's architecture - however, if Onlive proves to be successful, you'll see console-only games being released on Onlive as well, as console-only developers favor developing for a single architecture.

The most useful application I can think of for this is to spectatate people playing your level. If you can watch someone playtest without being "in the way", that could be really useful.2009-05-03 20:29:00

Wow, I think that's a great idea! It would really help creators know what's wrong with their level if they watch other people play it (even though you could just turn off your controller, this would be easier). I really hope they implement this.2009-05-03 21:52:00

off-topic: I think OnLive is going to be a major flop, because if every console gamer would now need to stream games, (So even singleplayer will happen online) they can NOT guarantee decent connections.. no way..

on-topic: Yeah, spectator mode is something i've wanted for a long time it would be a great addition.

On topic: I think this is a really good idea. It would also be cool if you could spectate people playing your levels, to see if anything needs changing.

Off topic: Wouldn't Onlive hurt the gaming industry? Because if it worked as planned it could destroy it's competition meaning consoles would not get good sales.

DING! Correct!
It seems as if OnLives ultimate plan is to cripple all consoles as we know it.
Still, you have to pay for monthly service even when you're not on.
