Post Templates

Archive: 24 posts

I've added something really nifty. It's not exactly flashy or shiny, but it is really helpful: post templates.

What are post templates?
Post templates are pre-made templates that you can create in order to speed your posting.

Why should I care about them?
They're easy to use and very helpful! Here's a rather common scenario: You've been leaving a ton of feedback on the Level Showcase, and you aren't stopping soon. However, formatting a Pros/Cons list gets very tedious - why should you have to create the same layout multiple times? Now you don't have to - you can create a template and automatically "inject" it into any post. Remember, these are personal - your templates will only show for you, so feel free to add whatever you'd like.

How do I set it up?
There's two ways to manage your templates: You can either use the User CP dropdown box in the navbar (click "Post Templates"), or, for those of you who can't view the dropdown boxes, you can click the "Manage Post Templates" option in the User CP (look under "Your Profile").

You must first add a category in order to sort your Post Templates - these are useful for separating different types of templates into easy-to-access categories. After you have created a category, you can then add a template to it. Once you do so, you'll be presented with our advanced text editor, in which you can format a layout in any way you'd like. You can add notes to yourself, embed images, etc - whatever you can add in a post, you can add in a template.

How do I use my templates?
It's very easy. In any advanced reply editor, just pick the template you'd like to use from the new "Post Templates" dropdown box. It will automatically insert your selected template, ready for you to add, remove, and modify to your heart's content. Note: inserting templates will not remove existing text! It behaves exactly as if you had copy-pasted the text - for example, if you highlight text and select a template, it will replace the highlighted text with the template. You can actually combine multiple templates in one post without any hassle or re-editing!

Have fun with this - it's not really a casual poster's dream, but it will definitely help out the lot of you that love posting feedback or find yourself doing other semi-repetitive tasks. Enjoy!

I know I'll personally use it (for Spotlights and updates and such), but I didn't expect everyone to find a use for it. It's perfectly alright if you don't.

Whoa, very nice addition! I'll get to making my templates right away. This should help a lot of people especially reviewers.

Off-topic: Have you won a crown for this site yet? If not, what are they waiting for?!

This is great! I was thinking, is there a way to make the templates shareable? Say you have made a nice way to sort out a level showcase, and you think people might want it. This would also be very helpful.2009-05-03 22:27:00

Copy it into a PM and send it to them? Then they can just copy it into their own template section.

I meant share it with the WHOLE community, I'd rather not PM every single member...

Not for our version of vBulletin, no. Sorry.

I'll take it from that that it's available for 3.8? From what I understand, we don't upgrade to 3.8 because some of ours mods would become instantly unusable... right?

anyway, this sounds awesome and useful;- for people who would use it. I can definitively see it being useful for community spotlights and recurring contests or whatever... I may use it in the future, maybe not...

Unless someone wants to make on for me, because I've never been too good with creating an organized... well, anything. This would be helpful if someone makes me a level template ... maybe.

Anywho, yeah, sounds cool.

Ok, but this gives me an idea of some sort of thread were we all post our own templates, vote for the best, then put them on the main post so all can get it. Ya, I think that would work... I may start one sooner or later.

Awesome. Very useful addition to an already outstanding site.

Curious on one thing (which i could just go test for myself, but...)

Will this also work in PM's? And if so... how about in the recipients box? One thing I've oft wished for here at LBPC is a Group or DL function when sending a PM.

Thanks CC! As always... fantastic work!

You mean sending the same pm to different people? You already can, in the pm recipients box, write up to five people there followed by ; ... unless you mean something else, I'm not sure >_>

I mean a Distribution List, or DL. Storing a list of 5 (or, um... more) names for things like clubs and groups and whatnot.2009-05-04 01:49:00
