Ergonomic Mice - Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Archive: 11 posts

I am experiencing early symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (what's that? (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carpal_tunnel_syndrome)), so I'm taking steps to avoid further damage. I'm picking up a wrist brace, but I'm also looking into ergonomic mice. Due to it's price and overall positive reviews, I've had my eye on this one - however, I'm still open to suggestions. If you guys know of any good mice that you've run into, let me know. I don't want to overlook any possible options. 2009-05-03 05:58:00

Sorry to hear that Cartman. A mate of mine got CTS after playing Counter Strike for four days at some tournament. We relentlessly made fun of him for weeks of course, but that's beside the point...

I don't know if I can in good conscience recommend a MS mouse, Logitech has always been faithful albeit I hear their newer line of mice can be a bit flimsy. Razer mice ara ace as well, but can be a bit pricey...

I actually haven't had to buy a new mouse in years thanks to one LT's old designs, the MX700. (http://www.everythingusb.com/hardware/index/Logitech_MX700_Cordless_Optical_Mouse.htm)
This mouse has been plain awesome for me. It has a good feel to it, not too light and not too heavy. Its precise and just feels durable somehow. Add to that the fact I haven't had to replace it since I bought it years ago and you got yourself a pretty sweet bargain.
Unfortunately it might not suit your standards, and I fear you would be hard pressed to find a fresh one. Seems the 700 had a short lived production cycle. I've spent some time trying to find another one but none of the local retailers here have seen one.

Agreed mith Morrinn. Logitech mice have been great for me, I've got an MX laser 1000 which I've been using for a couple of years and is fantastic. I'm actually considering picking a second one up for work because it makes other mice feel inferior!

I don't know for def if it would help with carpal tunnel as I've never been unlucky enough to suffer from it. Hope you get yourself sorted.

I'm not sure either. The goal is to prevent my wrist from bending as much as possible (hence the "turned-sideways" design of the MS mouse), so I'm not sure if that mouse will work out. There's always the option of using something other than a mouse (such as a touchpad or penmouse), but I don't want to make too drastic a change.

Have you tried using the mouse in your other hand?2009-05-03 20:00:00

I doupt that would be of much use unless he sports ambidexterity.
I also dont think a pen mouse would do you a whole lot of good, but maybe a touch pad would.
Do you have a mouse pad with one of those silicon arm rests? Those may help as well.

Well, ignoring the fact that I'm not ambidextrous at all and my workflow would be severely hampered, it would just eventually cause the same issues in the other hand.

No, I haven't used a mouse pad since I bought an optical mouse. The problem with that is it doesn't follow me everywhere, so I'd have to constantly adjust to keep my wrist in a good position. I'd rather invest in a good mouse.

I use both an optical mouse as well as a good mouse pad, perhaps you just need a better pad? Failing that, maybe you could benefit from one of those silicon pads to rest your hand against.2009-05-03 23:19:00

I doubt this will help but Kid Koala has an album called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome He's a turntablist with some serious skills.. ye never know, maybe he suffers from it too.
YouTube - Kid Koala

On the more relevant side, would a mouse with a "thumb-ball thingy" help? You wouldn't actually have to move your wrist at all. But you'd probably end up with a mighty powerful thumb
