Ring of Fire

Archive: 16 posts

Hey, I just updated this level I made a loooooooooong time ago. It's called "Ring of Fire" and it's a score challenge. There are two ways to earn points- through the race, and the "x-tra point timer." Also, would anyone be wiling to film it for me? (It's kind of short.)

(Hopefully) Pics coming soon, from beyond the rift. (I had to throw it in there.)

It`s a good, fun score challenge.

The fire right at the exit, given how small the exit is and how fast it`s going is a right pain in the *** though.

And what`s the deal with the scorebubbles in that room? Would it not be better to drop players through the race ending and straight onto the scoreboard?

Anyway, it`s good, looks pretty, doesn`t outstay its welcome and gets 5 stars from me.

Thanks, yeah I thought it might be something like that. I dunno, do you think it would be better without the prize room?

Any F4F?

Well the prize room gives an opportunity to change the score. As long as you collect the bubbles without pause, you could find yourself above someone who doesn`t. Of course chances are everyone will just collect them all at once making it redundant anyway. Unless there is something more to it? Does the amount of bubbles released relate to anything?

Yeah if you could do F4F on 'Eddy Mitter' I`d appreciate it bud thanks.

Yes, the longer it takes you to "escape" the wheel, the less points you get.

Alright, I'll check it out ASAP.

Well in that case it serves a purpose in that it doubles your score or whatever, but since it`s a score challenge, my feelings are that you get your score from the race itself.

It`s not a bad thing, I mean it wasn`t a hassle doing it or that, just when I got to it i was wondering what it was for is all.

Well I made a version like that, lemme know if you think it would work better.

Playing EM-Have to finish when I get back.

I do think it work better on its own. In my opinion, score challenges, or survival challenges should all go straight to the scoreboard once they`re done. That`s the point right?2009-05-02 01:49:00

I updated it: it now has two prizes in opposite ends (Is that okay to have prizes in a minigame?) and when you finish the race you get dropped on the scoreboard. I'm going to republish soon, tell me what you guys think when you do.

Side Note: I couldn't finish EM-I went out for dinner and it was too late when I got back.

EDIT: Alright, It's up. I added some things and changed things around a little.

I played this level back on Friday, and I think it's awesome!

+Fun and frantic!
+Great use of the race aspect
+Good use of visual level design

-Wondering what the point of the prize bubbles at the end is for.
-It might give motion sickness to some people.

About the wheel itself I don't have much to say except praise. The design of the wheel leaves awesome dead-ends that not only impede your progress, but kill you! Visually, keeping them all warm colors and browns gives the level a harmony that flags that everything belongs together. ...and my favorite part: it is FAST! Sackboy looks like he's hanging on for dear life, and that's awesome.

What you might want to look into though, is the ending after you escape the wheel. Matt is right, the score bubbles as of right now don't really serve much of a purpose in the level other than to change your score into some arbitrary number. Perhaps you can keep the extra score room, but make it so that bubbles pop out of it as you grab special switch things within the wheel, maybe in the dead ends, so people would have the extra incentive of not only beating the clock, but to see if they can go out of their way fast enough to get extra points. Just a thought.

Another thing I noticed is that I was playing this game with my siblings and they were complaining about getting dizzy with the level. Personally I didn't have a problem with it, maybe it just wasn't a level for them, but then again maybe it's something you might want to consider for your next level, especially if you have catering to a broad audience in mind.

Everything aside, I thing this level is great and hearted it. Hope to see great things in the future!

It's been edited since then, OJBR (I had to delete it because my score was so high oO) and a couple things have changed.

I took out the prize room, and made it a straight shot to the scoreboard; and I added two prize bubbles in the two dead ends in the outermost ring (Sprites of the White and Black mages ).
Coupled with the "Collected All Gifts" reward (the Red mage ) I think it gives players incentive to go out of their way away from the finish as well as adding to the replay value. But I'll let you guys be the judges of that.

Yeah I think that`s a good idea. I don`t bother about collecting stuff, but it`ll definitely make it more appealing to some.2009-05-03 19:32:00

Checked it out the other night and it's cool. Nicely designed. Not terribly hard or easy.

The only problem I encountered was exiting the wheel. It's the hardest part of the level. I'm not sure I'd recommend slowing it down or not but it's the part that gave me the most problems. Fun level though. Thanks for sharing it.

Like I said: It was updated today. The fire near the end is slanted now (I think?) but it is separate from the rest because I contemplated un-lethalizing it (it's glass). I don't know. I agree that that's probably the hardest part though.

(EDIT: Is bumping threads allowed?)

They don't like it from what I've understood. It's a no no in the site guide section. You'd have to ask a mod for the "official" policy though.2009-05-04 22:51:00
