Hey guys after a week of beta tests my newest level has now been published properly.

The level is a platformer with a bit of humour thrown in for good measure.

Story is that Sackboy makes a flippant remark about how he isn`t impressed when he comes across an emitter in a level. However, this leaves someone a little less than pleased who decides to show Sackboy just what it takes to get an object from your object box, to your levl.

Video is here thanks to Cog:

Great level I shall be filming it soon!

The whole idea of the level was great, and reminded me a lot of In the Mind of H4Her, as it had the same concept of explaining a part of LBP. The storyline was great, and was funny at parts which is always an added bonus. The detail was good, and the mushroom looked great! Some good platforming and puzzle. The level it self looked great and I loved how each section had it's own theme! The ending was great and funny, loved it!

But there were several problems I faced; When you have to hold the tree to open the door, it was a bit laggy, maybe remove a few lights. Also, when you get into the column room, the first one you see that comes down has a strange camera angle, and made me die because I didn't see it until I fell into the gas. Also, when you have to go the other direction than the mushroom goes, I didn't know I had to toss it down, so I had to respawn, maybe had a sign that points down and has a mushroom sticker or something that tells you to toss it down. Also, I was completely confused at the 'follow the pipes' section. (Might have been me being stupid though...) There was no right left and left, only up and down and such. So I died thrice trying to get into the right one, one of my deaths resulting in the platforms down there being hard to see and easy to miss. I think that's it.

Don't be worried by the long list of errors, they are each very small and probably easy to fix.

Overall the level was great, and I'm filming it in minutes.

5 stars and hearted! Also, for F4F could you do my 'Bouncing Balls - Survival Challenge"? I just got a video up and need it to be bumped! Thanks!

I tried this today, and here's what I think. Overall it's pretty great. I loved the story, and the visuals are great. You used the lights very well. There's a spot where you jump on a spinning platform, and have to grab it then jump to the other side. Here I thought the gas up above was a little close to the platform. The part with the pipes was just right. I don't agree with cog on this part. You clearly explained at each Y it goes a different way. The only thing I really didn't like was that it was really to easy. Of course I prefer levels that are a little more challenging, so that's just my personal taste. The majority of people will probably think the difficulty is just fine. All in all I think it was a great level. Great work!!!!2009-05-02 01:05:00

Thanks everyone.

-Sorted the camera angle at the start of the columns section so hopefully you`ll see it coming, and added an arrow.

- Lag is just due to the moving parts in the level. Most are only set to start when you walk into the particular room, but others need to stay on.

- It is a bit easy. Certainly for my skills (1337!!). However, the first person that played it was kind enough to give me one star and a 'frustrating' tag so obviously he didn`t feel the same! I like the difficulty as it is though. It doesn`t exclude anyone and can still be enjoyed by better players (I hope) while still offering a challenge to most.

-The gas is a little close to the rotating platform. I shall try sort that.

I see you still made a lot of changes since the beta!!

An original concept with some great gameplay elements, nice visuals and a healthy dose of humour.
Loved it, 5 stars and a well deserved heart.....nuff said.

Edit: Really liked how you completely changed the columns-section!!

Aw ok I didn`t realise it wasn`t HD. I`ll stick that uo then when it`s ready. I just got a bit excited when I saw it!

One thing I`ve noticed players doing at the part with where you choose which pipe to follow is that they`re trying to jump right from the platform to the hole rather than to the platform below them and then across. I`m wondering if it`s the way I`ve worded the magic mouth here.

Nah, it's because you can't see what's directly beneath the player.
It could just be a horizontal line of gas beneath the other pipes for all they now.
So they think that's the safest way....wich is not the case because they probably miss the jump and fall into one of the other holes anyway!!

.....and yes, this happened to me the first time around

Played it a couple of days ago and thought it was great. i loved the concept and it was done really well. Good design and humour too.

I really like puzzles of any kind and consider myself pretty good at them ( I did nearly all the puzzles in Professor Layton on the DS ) but must admit I was very confused by the pipe bit. I looked at where the pipe ended up if you went right, left.left and jumped to that pipe but died so in the end I just ended up jumping anywhere and luckily fell down the right hole.

The rest of the level was great though and has to be one of my favourite levels around now. Good work again Matt.

you know what i mean?

+The sections all blend in to each other well
+Some generally fun gameplay

Played the beta and just finished a play through of the final version. I enjoyed it as much as the first time! I really just love the concept for your story and the way that you have managed to incorporate some creative gameplay elements into the theme (i.e. digging through all the other junk that needs to be emitted). There were a couple platforming sections that I did find a bit difficult such as the sponges on winches in the fire area, but the infinite checkpoints balance it out.

This level has a great mix of a creative and funny story, nice visuals, and fun platforming. I enjoyed it! Well done!

Really clever story and some fun challenges - I really enjoyed it. I appreciated the quirky sense of humor it had and especially the jokes poked at players and creators alike.

The lighting is really interesting. Extreme color saturation that takes on a neon otherworldly kind of look in some spots and very subtle and soft lighting in others. Very different looks that you've blended together very nicely.

I especially liked the tube section. Took a minute to fully "get it" but it's a great challenge and I don't think I've seen that combination of platforming while trying to pay attention to the background before. Felt very fresh for me.

Overall a fun and beautiful level. 5 stars & a heart from me too. Thanks for sharing it!

Ok, I FINALLY got back in town and got to give the release version of this a try - classic Mattification stuff! Fun, keeps your interest, and has a lot of little things to do throughout the level. Plus, has some nice challenging elements to it. I couldn't really find anything wrong. 5 stars and hearted. Great job! You've added a new gameplay style to your list: Mars, Pirates, and Emitter Satire.2009-05-04 03:57:00

You've made a very fun level that's very well designed.

Pros:
+ The concept is genious
+ It's really funny. I was laughing at the start
+ Nice platforming elements
+ It's long (I like long levels)
+ The pillars look great
+ Funny ending
+ I like it how you used infinite life checkpoints, they suit the level well
Cons:
- At the part where have to push the mushroom off the pillar you're on to the pillar below you, I was confused at first
- I found some parts a bit frustrating

Overall 5 stars and a heart. Genious concept!

This level is amazing! :hero:
On the opening screen, I was stopped in my tracks by how gorgeous the level looked. I continued to be stunned by the visuals all the way through to the end. Fantastic use of colour- very, very strong style.
Most people, I think, would use one of those awesome visual styles as the basis for an entire level. But you keep throwing out superb new themes from beginning to end.

The gameplay was also rock solid, imaginative and interesting, and humour was excellent. (I laughed out loud at the "subtle hint" by the pipes )

The only problem I had was in the greek pillars section, where I needed to seperate from the mushroom. I couldn't tell whether I needed to throw it left or right, so I dropped it left, and it randomly went into the gas. Not much of a problem as you can get another mushroom.. but doing so breaks the illusion of 'carrying' one object from beginning to end. Perhaps a few more clues there?

I did go back and forth over that part. On one hand I wanted a puzzle element to it and didn`t want to just say, 'Throw it right and you go left', but wanted people to make an informed choice rather than a guess.

However, the only clue there is that Sackboy can`t go right because of the gas so by process of elimination it should suggest it goes right and you go left. However that`s not to say it doesn`t mean the mushroom goes down to the left while you go high left.

I`m open to suggestions. I`m also open to the suggestion to leave it the way it is if others don`t think it was too hard or confusing.

Of course it COULD give you another chance to be funny.... such as a great big obvious sign to the right that says "Route emitted objects this way". Instead of just telling them, do something totally overblown.2009-05-05 23:24:00

I got confused because it looked like there was a 'safe' platform on the left as well as on the right - suggesting that it didn't matter which side the mushroom fell on. I must have misjudged the planes or something.

maybe have something to show that the left-hand drop will result in the doom of the mushroom....

... goes a LONG way toward making a level memorable for me.

I loved the "thwump" noise when you shove the mushroom into the transporter box. (sorry, I forgot the acronym )

I'm a sucker for platforming, and this level has it! It was pretty tough actually, I'd probably still be struggling to get through w/o the infinite lives.

Right after the second transport box, I unexpectedly fell through a crack in the floor. I wasn't sure if it was there on purpose or not.

A fun level and educational to boot! Before now I wondered how emitters worked and had chalked it up to witchcraft.

4 stars and a fun tag for coming up with such a ridiculous explanation for emitters, and some great platforming too.

This is a remarkable level, and as I've replied to your level:

This is great, this shows what LBP is about: GOOD LEVELS. Not those with countless numbers of rocket cheetahs and more of that stupid levels. Altough I create some pretty strange levels myself too.

This is my favorite level around now. I love this!

Thankyou very much.

It just a few minutes ago finished its run on the cool levels page. 7,195 plays which is nearly 10 times as many as my previous best (the other levels have since had a boost too), so that was pretty cool. Even spent the last 2 days on page 1 so I`m all proud!

All I need to do now is sift through the spam comments and play the levels of those who left proper comments.

I gave it 5 stars and a heart. I thought it was hilarious. I loved the humor and narrative. Usually people complain about a lot of talking, but this was just great.

The platforming wasn't super inventive, but it was done well and that's all that matters. The visuals were nice (loved the lighting in the beginning) and how everything turned you back to where you started.

Overall great level and definitely a lot of fun. One of the better story levels I can think of.

Btw I loved how the rocket cheetah was there at the end. Very nice touch.

In fact I still have a smile on my face because of your level haha. Good job. I gave it 5 stars and a heart.

Its clever, witty, challenging, funny and down right fun!

i'm glad you mentioned that actually. a lot of people get worried that they can't think of anything new, but inventing something brand new takes a distant second to making fun, challenging obstacles that work properly imho.

Can't really say much more then all the peeps before me mentioned.
Fantastic level matt! Some things i've really enjoyed
- lightning is stunning! especially the opening part. I love how you give the impression that the sun shines through the trees
- The story is great, made me really laugh :-)
- great level design!

I found the part with the fire & sponges pretty hard, but like mrsupercomputer already said, the infinite-lives checkpoint balance it nicely out.

conclusing: a great looking level with some nice platform elements and a really cool story,
a combination that seems to be pretty rare these days

I played this and thought it was a great level! The concept was excellent, and the injections of humour were and all the right places and served to spice the level up a bit. However, I had no idea what I was doing at the pipe bit and it was just by chance that I jumped down the right hole. I also think the section where you fall through the flaming wheels is a it touchy. Maybe increase the pause by 0.5 seconds.

Wow, great level! I played it few minutes ago and i had a lot of fun with it. The level has a wonderful concept, with a cool story and very nice contents. The intro was really funny, and the humor in all the level makes me laugh often The gameplay parts witht he mushrooms are very wellmade, and the Mail Box with the really short name was hilarious xD I enjoyed all the level, the graphic, the lights, the gameplay, all was awesome! Very nice idea to follow the pipes with the instruction, i never saw a part like that in LBP levels.
You did a very nice use of the lights, expecially in the begining, with the "sunshine" that goes trough the leaves of the trees! In all the level i saw nice lights efects, like when the mushrooms goes on the cart
The ending was funny too: finally i found the ROCKET CHEETAH! YEEA! XD
5/5 stars, awesome

Gave it 4 stars and Brilliant!

wow matt, this level was amazing. played perfectly and the humour was spot on.

eddy mitter looked great, good character design.

just a fabulous level that was loads of fun to play. I didn't encounter a single problem, although the R1 sticker where you need to grab swing along the roof could maybe have done with being a bit lower as I didn't see it for ages.

5* hearted. awesome

Awesome level, man. Lots of variety, great looks, hilarious dialogue, and a very, very creative concept for the level. The stickering through the level was superbly layed out, with the piping connecting everywhere... good use of a few simple stickers adds alot to a level to keep it cohesive and looking sharp.

I like almost every section, and each one's a different challenge... a good mix of some short bursts of platforming and some escort sections. Well balanced.

The intense lighting had me moving at a slow pace most of the time, and made the last jumping section with the rising and lowering columns a bit tricky, but it was doable by all means and everything looked great because of the lighting. I'm the last person who can complain about causing slowdown with effects anyway

Nice level lol @ rocket cheetah... for some reason I thought I was going to be bringing it to Mario.

Pretty cool. I like the cutesy atmosphere; very LBP-style.

I didn't encounter any problems at all. I loved the pipes that the 'shroom went through - neat little intellectual puzzle to take a break from all the physics puzzles that're prevalent in LBP. Plus they looked cool

Gave it five stars 'cause it deserves 'em.

Thanks for playing, and for the kind words the kind words. That goes for everyone who`s left feedback.

Yeah the slowdown is a pain. I was thinking of only switching on the lights when they`re needed, but I`m not sure if that has any effect. Any thoughts on that?

I played through this level last night and enjoyed the level quite a bit.

You do seem to set up a poorly made level where the objective is easy the level is short but you?ve sabotaged your deception by building the set and decoration too well so that I wasn?t fooled by the charade.

I enjoy the concept that you explore which has been explored a bit by some other creators where you take a simple LBP concept, imagine a ?what-if? scenario and then explore it for fun.

This level is about ?what if the process of emitting objects was actually the responsibility of one person? Who?s job it was to sort and deliver all of the emitted objects all over the LBP?verse.

This level focuses mainly on platforming elements with a few puzzles and the job of escorting a luckless mushroom through a series of obstacles.

I think that you?ve done a lot of tweaking and bug fixing since this level originally came out and the results show. I didn?t run into any game breaking elements, didn?t get stuck or get confused where to go.

This is all a welcome state to play in and it was just up to me and my run/jump skills to worry about.

In general the platforming is straightforward and basic but what makes the level enjoyable and avoids repetitive doldrums is the varied environments that you play through. There were quite a bit of interesting sections each with a slightly different take on the platforming concept and none of them ran too long or got too frustrating. Some of the level segments where easier than others though nothing too tricky and the use of the infinite checkpoint is a prudent step to keeping the level open for a wider play base.

This balance shows up throughout the level and there is a good flow and pacing to the level. In addition to some solid gameplay sections there is also a bit of dry humour thrown into the mix which enlivens the level quite a bit.

This is a solid level that has a good foundation in platforming, funny, clever dialogue and situations and some clear and beautiful set design.

Actually when I was first designing it, the opening scene was going to be really crappy. Then I thought that some people would quit out straight away, thinking that it was an H4H level.

In the end I ended up with a mish mash of both worlds. I decided that the idea was that The Little Big Planet itself was beautiful, but some of the things we put in it aren`t so pretty. Don`t think it quite came off like that mind you.

Awesome tongue-in-check level!

First let me say this level has the distinction to be the only level containing a rocket cheetah that I have hearted

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=477&pictureid=4421

You do a great job with the cartoony style. Eddy Mitter is very well designed. Some people don't appreciate the cartoony look but there's just as much work that goes into it as the realistic stuff when done well.

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=477&pictureid=4420
The spot where sackboy jumps down to follow the pipes killed me, not because I followed the pipes wrong, but because I jumped down and landed directly in one of the wrong pipes because I couldn't see the floor from above

http://www.lbpcentral.com/forums/picture.php?albumid=477&pictureid=4419
This wall crusher was done really well. Pretty much all of the platforming in the level is quite well balanced. It's not too hard or too easy. The final challenge, with the up and down pillars over the gas with the score bubbles was very well balanced.

I liked how when you put the mushroom in the first mailbox it made a sound to let you know you did it right. I was expecting that sound on the next one and thought I did it wrong because there was no sound. I'd recommend having the same sound for all of them.

On the mailboxes where you pick up the mushroom, I thought the first magic mouth should probably tell you to go into the mailbox after hitting the button. I was expecting that I would hit the button and the mushroom would roll out, explosive box style.

None of these things took away from the level, which as I said, was well made and the platforming well balanced. I definitely appreciated the humor at the beginning and the follow-up on the rocket cheetah joke at the end. The last magic mouth cutscene with Eddy Mitter saying "how did you think it was done? Magic?" was priceless.

5 stars, a heart and the cute tag!

If you get a chance I'd appreciate it if you could check out my galactic frontier level and put some feedback in my showcase thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=12085).

Thanks very much dcf for that feedback.

- I didn`t realise that I hadn`t put the sound on the other mailboxes. I`ll sort that. Thanks for the spot.

- I'll see about adjusting the speech bubbles to let folks know that the mushroom must be retrieved.

- The one bit that has me concerned/perplexed is the problem with the pipes. I had HUGE issues with that early on with people not seeing the part below and simply taking a leap of faith. I added a barrier at the platform with the checkpoint so people would be forced to drop down. I take it you got over the barrier?

- The one bit that has me concerned/perplexed is the problem with the pipes. I had HUGE issues with that early on with people not seeing the part below and simply taking a leap of faith. I added a barrier at the platform with the checkpoint so people would be forced to drop down. I take it you got over the barrier?

Yep, I jumped right over and into the first pit

If you opened up the middle thick layer then sackboy could jump over there and then he would need to choose which pipe to follow by doing a down jump.

That`s how it`s meant to work at the moment. There`s actually a platform directly below the one you jumped off. The idea being that you jump down to that and the camera then shows how to pick your path.

I didn`t realise it was possible to get over that barrier. I`ve added an invisible wall to stop players doing that. If you couldn`t get over the top I think you`d soon realise you were to head down.

Unfortunately I can`t open up the middle layer, as you`re already on it. The obstacles just after that section have to be built on a thick layer, so that carries back to the pipe puzzle. Since the pipes are also on the middle layer, players would walk right through them and it`d look daft. It`s hard to notice on the few occasions when you jump through them.

Hi Matt 82. I just played your level this morning, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The concept was very unique, and very well executed. Your humorous touch in the speech popups had me laughing several times, and the character was perfect--did you make him from scratch? A great mix of story line and platforming, and well balanced difficulty, which added to my overall enjoyment as I played this level. Your attention to detail in the stage was impressive, which made this a very solid creation. You also did a great job of keeping your audience in mind, when describing just what is actually involved in getting an emitted object to appear--not too technical for those that don't create, and just technical enough that Creators would find this very amusing.

Personally, there is nothing I would change in this level, and I viewed it from several perspectives. Even my daughter watched me play it, and she wants to play it on her on now. So, it appeals to both young and old, which is easier said than done. Very good job.

I rated this 5-Stars, hearted it and you as a Creator, and I plan to play all of your other levels as well.

Great Level!

I recommend everyone play this level.

Thank you so much for the positive comments on my trilogy.

Just played your level and thought it was absolutely brilliant.

It was great to look at, great to play and I haven't laughed so much since I drove off in the car with my handbag still on the roof!!!!

I loved it.

Nothing that I`ve ever said or done can compare with that! You got a LOL out of me there.

Just played your level, and I loved it! The humor was absolutely brilliant, from the

"just another grab-switch", "up, down around the town", and the "what took you so long?". Great punchline!

Very nice details all around the level, even though one part (the first slow door) seemed to lag.

Rated 5*, heart and a ingenious-tag.

Thatnk you very much

Yeah the whole level suffers some screen tear and lag at times (the door is slow though) due to the number of LED lights about the place. For whatever reason, the part with the door seems to be worse than the rest.

Awesome level! Great use of decorations, and the dialouge was hilarious. It was fairly challenging, and long enough so that anyone could enjoy a full experience. 5 starred, hearted, etc. etc. 2009-06-17 17:44:00

Hi Matt,

I had the chance to play your level this morning. I loved both the visuals and the gameplay. Moreover, there is here a good sense of humour.

Things i think you could improve:
- Logo section. It is actually poor. The fonts are bautifull, but there is no any event, not any light, nothing that could say you: Woaaaaa.... i will play an amazing level (but...the problem is here, your level is amazing!).
-I found the section with textil roofs that go up and down very frystrating. God bless the infinite checkpoint!!!
-The section with columns didn't fit well visually with the rest of the level.

Nevertheless, a level that is worth playing, 4 stars, Brillant tag and a heart

So that's how emitters work! I feel sorry for that guy, I'll be using emitters less from now on. It's not fair for me to be giving him so much work. I guess that's why the thermo takes such a hit sometimes when you use emitters, we have to repay him somehow . Great level dude, I played it a long time ago but didn't remember to post back. A great story, it looked great and it was very funny. IIRC I uploaded a picture with the rocket cheetah, I was sad I didn't move since I was really looking forward to that ride (lol.)2009-07-14 05:07:00

Your level was really cool and crazy, one of the best story driven levels, that uses humour about the behind the scenes of LBP.
Had some problems in the scene with the columns since my sackboy autojumped from plane to plane into the gas.
Just a little annoyng, but you could solve it with a flat tiny plane.
BTW 5 stars and heart.

there were a few reasons that I didn't make a big event out of the title sequence.

1) it's been done so many times that it's now clich?.
2) the level has a fairly slow start as it is with all the speech bubbles. I wanted players to get to the action asap. title sequences look cool the first time but get old quickly on multiple plays. add in the 6 or so cutscenes at the start and it would simply be too long before players got to do anything.
3) I don't think bigger is always better. I like that it's understated. since the level isn't a huge epic, with a massive boss fight, I don't think it would suit a bombastic opening.

@ omegaslayer:

there is a set route to take at the columns. and there isn't any gas on that route for you to hit. I can only think that you were either blazing a trail or that I've moved something I shouldn't have. I had a look, but couldn't see anything out of place. if you could remember where you auto-shifted, it would be helpful.

thanks for the feedback chaps!

I played this a while back. I really enjoyed this. The story was great and very funny. The premise for the level was brilliant i think--really lends itself to humor. The platforming was fun and inventive--especially the part where you have to remember which direction to take with the pipes. This was a really great level, a little goofy looking, but a great experience nonetheless. I'll never take emitters for granted ever again.2009-07-18 20:18:00

Distractor monster ("left, left, left right, yadda yadda...") was my favorite bit. Also, rocket cheetahs always = win.

The final pillar jumps, with the bubble pyramids, were actually the hardest part of the level. After so much platforming that I could get by through trial and error, it was a bit weird to have to utilize precision all of a sudden. It by no means reduced my enjoyment of the level...I'm just searching for something, ANYTHING, I would possibly tweak in order to change the thing.

Sorry the comments took so long in coming...I've finally figured out, just recently, how to sit down to a solid block of level reviewing without getting invites.

5*/H, mostly for the comic tone. I think it strikes the balance between mocking rocket cheetahs, and acknowledging their place in the LBP ecosystem.

EDIT: I was going to go and bump your Tortuga levels, too...but they DON'T EXIST. What the deuce?! Those things are awesome!
