Little Fatal Frame

Archive: 18 posts

Look me up and check out my Little Fatal Frame series, let me know what you think. It's three parts long, so review as many as you like.

This three part adventure is based off of the Fatal Frame games, and uses the concept of Camera Obscura to create a new way to fight the enemies. You use the sticker given to you at the beginning to "take pictures" of the enemies, utilizing sticker switches linked to protected brains to defeat them when you use the sticker ("take a picture") on them. The story is completely original, loosely getting its inspiration from Fatal Frame 3.

If you like the sound of it, check it out! I can always use feedback! (and author hearts...). If you want me to check out something of yours, by all means, leave me a message and I'll check it out, heart (if i like it, of course; but i'm not too strict on what I like), and check out your stuff in general. Thanks. ^_^

Putting up a trailer now. There's no sound but I caught a few clips of how the level works.

Hey DJLols, I just finished playing your level.

First of all, let me say that I have not played the Fatal Frame games so I can't really judge how closely your level resembles the game.

Pros:
+ I really liked the dream concept
+ Using stickers to defeat enemies felt fresh
+ Enemies looked pretty good

- Visual Polish
- Visible switches and sensors
- Perhaps a little short

Overall, I enjoyed it but you should definitely try to hide some of your switches!!
There was one place where you had huge chunks of dark matter in plain sight with sensors and sounds on it. That did not look good.

I gave it 3 stars and tagged it "fun"

Thank you for the feedback! ^_^ I'm gonna tweak some of those switches. As for the "too short", is that referring to all 3 parts, or just part 1 is too short? I'll probably check out your stuff in a few.2009-05-02 05:10:00

Yeah, all three parts have been released. ^_^ I had to wrap it up at that point because it was getting pretty close to overheating, and I didn't wanna put in another area and risk overheating.

PS: All three parts have been polished and republished. There should be no more visible switches (aside from sticker switches), and I've added more damage stickers to the ruins so they look better. Leave me some feedback! ^_^

cool idea!
i've never played fatal frame but i know the gist of it i think.
this is a cool level, short but sweet. the change to sepia tone is good.

you should mention you have to turn community objects on to use the camera.
there is a part where you fall out of the dream back to reality after taking your first picture (but its kinda tricky to do fall out). also the stairs in the house are not so easy to descend (not hard either just saying)
i give 4star yay

Yeah those stairs are the thing I get the most complaints about, but at this point i'd have to do a lot of redesigning the whole section in every instance of the house in the 3 part series (probably like 6 or 7 houses) just to fix a minor inconvenience. People can get down it, it's fine. You should try the 2nd and 3rd parts if you liked part 1. Thanks for the feedback.2009-05-05 00:01:00

I checked out #1 and #3 the other night and they are interesting. I've never played the original game but I thought the concept was cool. The camera concept and that the dream has that sepia color tint to it was really nicely done. I think now that creators have access to Global lighting we'll see more of this style of lighting but this is the first time I've seen it used so well.

The story is strange but sort of compelling and I like how you repeat the house area in part 1 and 3 (presumably #2 as well) Some of your monsters/ghosts are really cool too.

There needs to be a little more clean design on some of the areas and less visible dark matter. The one ghost/gas boss has some gnarly looking pistons exposed too. Might want to make those invisible.

Overall a creepy and atomspheric level that was fun to play. I gave it 3 stars. Thanks for sharing it!

Glad to get some feedback on my update! The atmosphere was pretty lacking before, I had to use more stickers. God I love the "Realistic" sticker set. It fit this concept PERFECTLY, and the one sticker that didn't... Well... I made it fit. -points at stitches- it gave it a Little Big Planet feel to it. If you wanna make something with dolls creepy, give them stitches.

Fun fact: The figure in the background of the 2nd picture in part 2 is actually one of my favorite costumes.

I've only played a demo of Fatal Frame, and that was quite a long time ago. I just played all 3 parts. Here are my thoughts:

Pros:
+Sepia tone for nightmares
+Interesting concept
+Good use of global settings tool
+Some well designed enemies

Cons:
-Visuals not too great
-On the first part, where you have to give the eye to the skull, the eye can fall down to the left, and you can't bring it back up.
-Some visible dark matter
-Using the grid may have helped in some places

I give the series as a whole 4 out of 5 stars.

This one has been on my playlist for some time but I've only just got round to playing it. But it is a very good level with some good gameplay and clever features.

Pros:
+All the dream sections are good and are induced well
+The whole camera idea is nice
+Good use of different materials
+Nice enemies

Cons:
-A little more visual polish is needed (some visible dark matter in places)
-Very short for a three part level. I felt they could have been made a single one
-The boss on number 2 was extrememly difficult to beat

Overall though I had fun playing your levels and rated them (part one) 4 stars (part two) 3 stars and (part 3)4 stars.

Actually, the thermo's were about 75-90% on all three levels, otherwise they woulda been one level.

I'm actually thinking of slowing the emitter down on the 2nd level boss. It *is* possible, but you have to time it just right, then run up to it and start sticking the hell out of it. I'll probably slow it down a bit and put an arrow pointing right to hint that you're supposed to make a mad dash.

I still have more polishing to do. I'll go hunt down that dark matter now, then I'll start with the 2nd level boss, but I can't really do anything about the length, since it's already practically maxed out.

Will also fix the demon eye in part 1.

I take that back. I just fit the pieces from all three parts into one level. I'm about to connect it together, hopefully successfully, because I'm gettin close to overheating. I dunno how I pulled 3 60-90% levels into one, but i did it.

Will update the thread when Little Fatal Frame (Complete!) is done!

UPDATE! "Little Fatal Frame" has been replaced with "Fatal Frame"

Check it out! I've combined all three parts into one, and made some adjustments to the enemies.

Thermo is 99% full!

Update: Just did quite a few bug fixes and optimizations. You can now get a higher score! There was one hidden score bubble emitter at one point, but nobody seems to have found it, so I put an arrow giving a hint.

Extra hint for LBPC Cause I love you guys: Hidden sticker switch~!

Go check it out when you get a chance, lemme know how you like it! It's been a grueling project, but it's finally complete!!

Ok, back from a playthrough of the new level (all in one! :O)
It was much better now than when it was three parts. Much easier for the LBP players and I would expect for you aswell (as your hearts and ratings aren't spread out).
Well, I really liked what I saw but still a couple of improvememtns to makes:
1)A couple of censored speech bubbles (I expect they had something like happened in them!)
2)Needs a little more polish. Mainly nearer the end when the sponge comes down after beating that machine thing. Use the corner editor to make that a bit smoother.
3)Again a little more polish is needed, this time it is after the skulls (the bit just before you battle the skull with fire hands). Once those have fallen there are a lot of random holes in the floor. Just needs fixing up to have more of an even floor.

My rating for your level overall was 4 stars and I hearted it becuase I really liked the ideas you implemented. See if you can improve the polish a bit and it will be a five star level

Yeah, those holes are from constant attempts to perfect the skull tower. I'll tweak those a bit.

Sponge? Which one, the demon's eye? OH, the ramp. Right. I have been meaning to pretty that up a bit.

I put that censored bubble on my list of repairs to make, and then FORGOT TO MAKE IT T_T Wait, are you talking about the attic in the last house before the final mansion? That's not supposed to be there.-deletes-

UPDATE: That should be just about everything. If anyone wants to go through it, please, leave feedback and lemme know if you encounter any bugs!!
