Help with emitters...

Archive: 5 posts

EDIT: Problem solved! Thanks!

Hey everyone,

I've got a bit of a problem here. I've got some dark matter thats being spawned with an emitter. It's in the middle of an "O" shape. I need it to appear and disappear when a switch is toggled. The problem is that I can't figure out how to get the dark matter to stay emitted while the switch is pulled, and going away when it's not. I tried making it emit very, very fast, but this failed to hold up my object. Please help!

I'd recommend doing the following:

Set the emitter lifetime to 2 seconds. Set the frequency to 1 second. Set the maximum number at a time to 1.

When the maximum number is set to 1 it will delete the old one when the new one is emitted. It's possible that this will be fast enough that the object will not fall. However, it's also possible that it is not fast enough and the object will fall anyway.

Can you be a little more specific regarding what you are trying to achieve? There may be a better method than using dark matter to prop the thing up. Are you trying to make, essentially, a one way elevator, that can be stopped and started up again, that only goes down? If that's the goal there are many ways to do it that are much better than emitting dark matter. I will be happy to discuss them but I'll wait for you to provide some additional information about your goal with this contraption.

If you must go with dark matter and the emitter trick I wrote above does not work there is a way to do it. Basically don't use a circle in the middle. Instead make two square holes. Use two emitters and have set to different syncs (if using the earlier timings make 1 have a sync of 0.0 and the other a sync of 0.5) so their lifetime ends at different times. This will definitely make the object stay put. There may still be an issue with the emitter failing to emit precisely into the moving object, but it's worth a try.

It's a kind of grappling hook. It will "latch" onto a platform, and when it does, the dark matter emits inside of it to keep it in place. Then, pressing the switch again, the dark matter would disappear allowing the grappling hook to move again.

Oh, and I haven't tried your ideas yet. Thanks for helping!

EDIT: I tried your suggestions, but I think I did one of them wrong, so I'm trying again.

EDIT 2: Success! It worked! Thanks a bundle!
