Power crystal puzzles - concept feedback needed

So my first level was going to be a simple platforming thing to just throw out there and get a response, but now it's turned into quite a big project. New theme is a fair bit of platforming (I think I've got some pretty unique ideas in there atm) interspersed with some puzzles based around "power crystals"

Power crystals basically come down to coloured key / coloured switch problems, but with a twist. If you match a power crystal to a power socket of the same colour, you can power a lift / door / bridge etc, but if you use the wrong coloured power crystal you get half power. So the puzzles are going to involve using mismatched colours to get you a partial solution, then you'd have to swap that out for the right coloured one when it's available later to complete the puzzle.

Simple eg: You have to get a largish device through a closed door. Door has a red socket, you have access to a blue crystal and there is a red crystal the other side of the door. Solution:

You put a blue crystal in the red door socket - allows your sack through but not the device.
You go through, bring back the red crystal from the other side
put the red crystal in the red door socket - door opens fully and you get the device through.


I'd like to get some feedback on this concept and maybe some playtesters for some puzzles and the platforming over the next couple of weeks whilst I'm devving.

Hiya friend. that sounds really interesting. I love puzzles of all types and i look forward to seeing how you've implemented it. I'd love to give it a playtest sometime.

Just look out for when I'm online but if I don't respond immediately don't think I'm being rude because I'm working on a new level of my own at the moment so when I get an invite I need time to just finish up what I'm in the middle of and save the level. I'm sure you know what it's like when you're working on something and you suddenly get an invite.

I wouldn't mind helping you out with the story mode either. I have everything except the aced prizes so if you invite me sometime just play any level you want to and I'll help as best I can.

Well at the moment I've made a proof of concept for one of the puzzles which will probably appear towards the end of the level - it has only 2 crystals but about 10-15 steps to complete! It looks shocking and the original design of the crystals are really awkward to manipulate. Tomorrow I'll probably rehash that and add in a simpler puzzle, to introduce the mechanics of it all and throw it online to see what people think.

As for the story mode - tbh I'm sick of the lag with playing online, so I've got an adapter for my ps2 controllers now - prob just gonna do it with some mates and some beers one weekend. Thanks anyway though.

sounds pretty cool. I imagine that making these puzzles could invove some intense logic though, especially when you start getting more and more crystals. I'm willing to playtest if you need it.2009-04-30 19:07:00

suprisingly, not much logic is needed. The "logic" of the puzzle is more about how your actions / movements are limited. That does make the puzzles really hard to design though

edit - um, yeah, lifts require a bit of logic and timing circuitry to work the way I want them to...

Anyway, I tihnk I've finally got the crystal design down (6th attempt!) so I'll put together a couple of sample puzzles and post them online later to see what y'all think

well I just published 2 examples. And the published version didn't have the examples is. I went back to my moon and they weren't there either. It's reverted back about 20 saves and 3 console reboots. I'm waaaay too annoyed to redo it now so I'll let this die until i can face redoing all that work.
