MAG Gameplay Debut

Archive: 20 posts

That's right, the first ever footage of Sony's MAG (Massive Action Game).

Check out the gameplay trailer here (http://www.eurogamer.pt/videos/mag-trailer-2?size=large).

The graphics aren't amazing considering the last few PS3 exclusives but they're doing well for 256 player battles.

Sweet, an all out war with no Coms, just players!
Any word on when should we expect this yet?

Aside from 256 players at a time... is there anything at all interesting about the game play? What is it like, class based? I mean I couldn't tell anything particularly interesting in the mechanics themselves from the video aside from the sheer size of the battles.2009-04-30 04:29:00

Well yes, there is a lot.
Depending on your rank is who you can command and who commands you, or what vehicles you can use (tanks, War planes etc.)
You can use a large arsenal of weapons incuding various veihcles as previously stated.
There is no NPC/CPU all is player vs Player mayhem.
You work in teams, i'm not really sure right now if its gonna be something like 1/2 players on one side and the others in the other side or in small groups, but its gonna be one of those (or maybe both )
There's no CPU battle or background sound images like you sometimes see in war games to "make it seem like in a war" since they're not gonna be needed according to them.
And i'm pretty sure i'm forgeting some more stuff.

The Joystiq article posted earlier sums it up quite nicely.

http://www.joystiq.com/2009/04/29/joystiq-hands-on-mag/

The main thing is the whole system of command. There are two teams, each of which are split into smaller groups that are commanded by another person. You have people in squads commanded by somebody, then above that is another commander who has control over a number of squads, then you've got the general who runs the entire thing.

Ah I see, so it's kind of like warhawk on steroids? (Needs to play warhawk more btw, awesome game)

Sounds pretty cool, will have to keep an eye on this.

I have to say, I've been incredibly skeptical, but that joystiq article is promising. I've been waiting for something like this for a long time. Truth be told, I'm sick of shooters. fps games are all bleeding into each other. I'm just getting fps fatigue. GIGANTIC battles, with huge numbers of players is exactly the thing to get me back into it.

I really hope it works though, and I hope the scale is felt during the game. The videos didn't impress me. but some of the things being implemented sound great - I love the 15 second "reinforcement" phase, meaning you'll always spawn in a group instead of alone.

I'll keep my eyes on this one. Still, I'm more for innovation and polish than having massive battles in games.2009-04-30 07:15:00

I'm interested to see how this will turn out. I hope there's a good strategy element to it so that it doesn't turn out to be an endless series of battles of attrition.

Even if you only get 100 players... that's still 50 players on each team. That opens up a lot of possibilities.

Honestly i can't wait to just have 200 odd people verse eachother in battles, it's going to be insane. The startegy element will also be cool, but the though of being a sniper with tons of people on the other team is just awesome. easy pickings xD2009-05-01 18:23:00

I never cared about graphics, because over at the official PS forums people left it because of the graphics.
can't wait, I love chaos

Games like this are what I love. Games that push boundaries and advance the gaming industry. LittleBigPlanet brought innovation in platforming. Red Faction: Guerrilla is going to have completely destructible environments that are dynamic and physics based, something NEVER in a game to this level before. MAG will have large amounts of players at once! Imagine the future of gaming, destructible buildings and physics with 256 players would just be a combination of the two main features of RFG and MAG. Hardware is limiting that now, but it eventually won't. 2009-05-01 20:23:00

I may be alone on this, but 256 is too many players. How are we suppose to effect the battle if all our actions don't even phase the other team? And can you imagine trying to get 256 people to focus on tasks, when 8 v. 8 barely works. Also I hope it's not squad based, because there nothing I hate more then crushing the other squad but then still losing because every other squad sucks.

I dunno about this one, it may not be for me. I prefer smaller games, I though 32 people in killzone was to much

Hmm, well like an actual 'war', one person can't effect the entire army. The battle still goes on even when you leave. That's the beauty of it really. If everyone works as a team - you'll win!

Also, it's not squad vs squad at all. It's 'your 8 person squad has a task. do it'. Whether you participate or not is entirely up to you, but you get a hell lot more XP if you do join in with them. Personally, I can't wait to sneak off to a personal little spot and pick off tons of players with the sniper xD Though I'll probably get picked off pretty easily!
If the idea of 256 players online isn't your thing... then obviously it's a stick to CoD4/5/6 thing... but MAG seems like it could be totally awesome and I can't wait xD It will *hopefully* feel like a real war zone... not a little area with the same players just spawning over and over.

Not a huge cod fan (haven't owned one since two), but i'm just saying that 256 may be a bit excessive. There's nothing worse then spawning and being in the middle of a cluster, getting killed without the chance to fight back. I know you spawn in waves, but still that probably won't keep you safe in a huge cross fire.

Also I really don't like the idea of not being able to influence the fight around me.
