Advertisements

Archive: 46 posts

If you haven't noticed yet, we've introduced non-intrusive advertisements. As of posting this, we have two default ad locations - one ad between the first post of a thread and the following posts (posted by "Adbot"), and one on the Homepage, which is not visible to registered users. You will not see these ads if you have any sort of adblocking software installed, and I will not try to circumvent those blocks, but please consider disabling it for LBPCentral. We work hard daily to keep the site running, and the more people that see the ads, the better.

We may introduce ads into one or two more places depending on results, but our goal is to be as non-annoying as possible. As with Donations, the revenue generated by the ads will go toward improving the site.

Please note: I realize many of you are very nice, and may consider a "click the ads" day (or something to that tune) in order to bring in more money. This will get our account with Google canceled. Google has advanced click tracking tools and is known for canceling accounts at the very instant there is a hint of fraud, so please do not organize anything of the sort. I won't deny you the ability to click once in a while, but don't go overboard - I can't give you solid numbers, but just exercise restraint.

The ads looks great and are, as you said, non-intrusive. I can see it now, a year from now... Community Spotlight #100. Highest voted level wins a $300 coupon at BestBuy. Oh yeah. ...Well, maybe not, but still, this'll be helping the site and community plenty. Just, behave, like Cartman said...

As before, rock on, LBPCentral!

Ya, I went back to an older thread and noticed some strange looking advertisements, that looked like they weren't ready. I just went back to the thread and they have the LBPC Adbot along with a working picture.

They are great, as they don't get in the way, so I have no problem with them. As long as it gives this awesome site more money, I'm happy with it!

I saw them a few minutes ago, at first I found them a bit weird, but after the first minute it's become normal, it's in a good spot, doesn't bother me one bit, because it only comes after the first post of every page. Basically, you'll probably get used to it.

I personally love the idea, and I can't wait to see how you'll implement this into making this site better, I would love to see actual prizes for contests.

Actually I think IT IS intrusive. It's exactly like the worse place to put an ad.

Why not have one between the thread and the tool bar on top of every page?
You could also add another one at the bottom of every page, right after the last post.

I'm inclined to agree, rather than having the Ads appear between posts, I'd love to see them outside of the threads.
Not a big deal though, either way, Not really bothered by them that much.

If these are the only ads that would be fine, I was hoping the donation would be enough to prevent these but these ads arn't annoying at all. Hopefully we can keep it at this. Do you get paid for having them AND if people click or just if people click2009-04-28 17:16:00

Ye... I don't see these ads as a problem. As long as it keeps lbpc going strong!

I agree that having one at the top and bottom of the posting area would be nicer than in between 2 posts. They would be less inclined to get on peoples nerves.

Em... off topic-ish...... There's this new user posting lots of advertisement threads in the introduction area! >:O

I presume it has nothing to do with the new ads system, and that he will be banned soon yeah??? Its kinda scary, he's trying to promote his shoe company.... don't be silly.... Sackpeople don't need shoes.

He/She/It has been banned already (in all likelihood it was a spambot). I'm fairly confident that CC doesn't want the forums to be flooded with advertisement threads, so if you see something like that, just hit the little "Report" icon in the corner and report the post. A friendly neighborhood mod will take care of the rest.

It was significantly more than that actually. I took the liberty of checking out the user's posts before confirming for myself that it was indeed a spambot and reporting it.

The mods here do an awesome job.

Is there any way to get the content of the ads changed? I know they're different for each individual based on their address but mine seem to be contradicting site rules, such as:

We did some rethinking, and along with the fact that the adbot screwed up AJAX in some cases, it did get a little annoying. Now, there's at least one on every page - one between the header and the navbar, and in the case of being in the Forum Index, one in the footer. Over the next few weeks, we'll be experimenting with placement to see which setup brings in the most revenue, but overall we'll avoid overly intrusive locations.

I'm still seeing them in the threads. (and my green dot is MIA?)
That's been fixed. Also, it's one or the other - since you're a distinguished user, the Donator markup is overridden. You may revert to the Donator display if you'd like, but the red username would be lost in the process.

Well, we won't be offsetting server fees any time soon, but we will be using this money for prizes and other fun things for the site. Donations are great for users who can willingly contribute - for those who are unable or unwilling, the ads will help give back some money to the community.

How does clicking on ads every so often benefit the site? (genuine question)
Here's how the system works:

An advertisement agency signs up for Google's AdWords (https://adwords.google.com/select/Login?sourceid=awo&subid=ww-en-et-ads-0-adsC-all&hl=en_us) program.
Google approves the agency and begins "serving", or displaying, those ads through their own AdSense (http://www.google.com/adsense/?hl=en_US&sourceid=aso&subid=ww-en-et-ads-0-adsC-all&hl=en_us) program.
Google tracks the number of clicks and number of views for that ad, and pays each "Publisher" (like myself) depending on either a) number of clicks on their ad or b) number of times the ad is seen 1000 times. Whether option a) or b) is used depends on the advertiser's preference.
Google then bills the advertisement agency for the amount handed out, plus a certain percentage (so Google can keep this service free).

I can't post statistics on our site's own performance in AdSense, as it is against the Google AdSense TOS, but I can say that clicks pay more than 1000 views in most cases. Feel free to click if you'd like - it benefits the site, and as long as you don't spam us with clicks, we shouldn't have a problem with Google.

Just a little status update on the ads since we've added them: They're doing great so far, and at this rate we might be able to do cooler things than we anticipated. There are certain things I can't do (http://adsense.blogspot.com/2007/04/encouraging-clicks.html) when it comes to these ads, but the clicks are helping the site immensely, so I'll say this: If you're even slightly interested in an ad's contents, don't be afraid to click. Google Ads are safe and free from spyware cookies and the like. Be sure to let others know that it's safe as well - I can't do it in a broad sense or I'll appear to be "encouraging clicks". :kz:2009-04-30 20:02:00

CC told me about what the money we're making can do, and I was really impressed, all I can say is there will be some amazing contests coming up if it keeps up with the pace it's going at now, and I mean amazing.

Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Today's been a hard day, though, definitely - we've had a ton of page views (over 6500) and only a few clicks, so we make nearly nothing per click. Ideally, we want 1 click to every 40-50 page views, since the more clicks vs. page views, the more each click is worth. Yesterday and the day before were better, but today hasn't been great.
