Flaming Timberland 2 - Spotlighted!

Archive: 42 posts

Hello Sackpeople

I've was sent here from a member of the workshop forum as they believed it would help get my level out there a bit more.

Upto now the feedback has been awesome and it's play to hearts ratio is around 1:2.5. It's called 'Flaming Timberland 2' (Second in the series funnily enough ) I'd obviously suggest playing the first one first then you'll see how it's progressed.

My PSN is jackofcourse

There's some pictures below and youtube link here:

Hope you enjoy

you should put your PSN in the topic post. It looks wonderful, and i'd love to play it... but lack the initiative to type in the full title. Plus i should really be doing schoolwork *shifty eyes*2009-04-28 04:05:00

Don`t you have a crown?

As brnxblze said nope I don't...I wish!! haha
What made you think that?

I've added my PSN to OP...didn't think of that with it being the same as my user name on here

I just recognise your name and thought it was among those that Mm recently awarded crowns.

However, a flashback and a quick look at LBP Workshop later tells me that you once 'Kudo`d' a post of mine(this one in fact (http://forums.littlebigworkshop.com/lbp/board/message?board.id=pod&message.id=33229#M33229)) there on infinite checkpoints. Which is why I remember your name.

So welcome to LBPC. It`s a good forum dude. Not necessarily huge, but you`ll get quality feedback here from quality designers (not me i just say everything sucks cos it`s too hard haha!)

I will play your level asap as it looks rather nice.

Just played the first. Couldn`t be more impressed. When Creator Pack 1 came out, the infinite lives tutorial made me realise that while many people had made levels that were better looking, or more epic than any of the Mm levels, no-one (that I`ve seen) had ever really managed to capture the feeling that it their level could have been made by Mm.

Then I played your level. It`s that perfect abstract look that I wish I could do properly that puts this level up there with the best. But it`s not just that it looks like a Mm level. It feels like one too. It`s challenging without ever being frustrating and the obstacles are clever and different from most I`ve seen.

Small point: you have an emitter visible just as you jump on the log thing on the conveyor belt near the end.

5 stars and hearted.

Part 2:

It`s the perfect sequel. Same charm, same feel, new challenges and obstacles. Inventive and clever. Never boring.

I love them both. If I could give them 10 stars each I would, but they'll just need to share between them.

Brilliant, well done to you.

This level sounds fun... And while the pics look like it is a lot of fun, I also respect Matt 82's opinions, so I definitely plan on playing it... I even bookmarked the thread so that I could find it again when I can get to my PS3.

You will probably get the most feedback if you

A: list the thread with a prefix of F4F
B: list the name of the thread in the title
C: put pics up (which you did (and which look great, btw))
D: post your PSN (which you did)
E: make a signature which lists your thread on this forum - so they can easily click to
your level if you make a post
- and lastly -
F: play peoples' levels and give them feedback.

If you don't list the level with its name and F4F people might skip the post not realizing it is a level.

I agree with dobi6 - at least put the name of the level in the thread title - helps find it later

Played both of your levels tonight and just loved them. Matt 82 said it perfectly for me - it's got the MM feel in a totally different and innovative way! I love the tap R1 concept as a jump alternative - I don't think I've seen that anywhere else before and not once did I find any cheap platforming or dull puzzles.

I noticed a visible emitter on the sponge you ride across the fire on pt 1 but I wasn't sure if it wasn't intentional. Just an heads up if it isn't.

It's a great level series! 5 stars & a heart from me. Thanks for sharing it!

!

I believe one of the MM picks had the tap-r1-jump.

Nice level, 4 stars imo, the lack of story, and some weird sections lowered the score.

Well, I have played the first one, and about to play the second... You got my 5 stars and a heart from me... Very cool level... Though I am not super fond of that at the visible emitter section. I thought it looked cool (the section in question), but I felt that you should have the sponge ramps continuing to flow... If you take too long on the swingy balls (with the one that turns into fire) you are stuck hanging... I think you should have them flow out every so often. I was stuck hanging a lot there trying to make sure I got the timing right for the fire ball... If you get up there too late, it turns to fire when you need to go, and then you are stuck...

About to play the part 2.

Ok, Part 2:

I too thought this level is better than part one...

Only issue that I had on this one is that the camera was frequently a bit ****y for me. Made it a little hard to see my platforming...

(and I am not the best platformer, so I need all the help I can get )

Wow, thank you all so much for the feedback it's been amazing, for the person who is mentioned 'some weird sections', could you possibly tell me which parts you mean? I like to know which parts people prefer/dislike

The emitter is intentional...it's just to give you an indication of what's to come...although it's probably not worth it and I may take it out.

The emitting fire sponges at the end switch between sponge and fire every 2 seconds, it works out that you get two chances to swing across before the platform zooms off and you're left stranded. Which just means you have to go back to the start of the conveyor bit

Wow, brilliant level and just sublime. I couldn't bring my eyes off the scenery.

Pros:
+Beautiful!
+Every second was eye-candy!
+Tasted just like an Mm level
+Had great puzzles and platforming
+Yellow sponge turning into a flaming sponge (in your first level but you have no thread for it) was inspired.
+Great use of music

Cons:
-Could've used more of a story
-Some of the things I'm sure were done in story mode and were just planted in your level.

Overall though this is one of the few levels able to be truely considered Mm quality! It is just brilliant! 5 stars and hearted

This is one of those spots that the weaker platformers will fail on is all... Because they only have one shot at it (after going through the triangle section to boot), they will likely stop and try to figure it out, not realizing that they are left hanging - literally...

Your options would be to slow down the emitters (which I wouldn't suggest), make the platforms chase each other, which would give you another chance (not sure I recommend this either),
or the simply change your spawn point to be an infinite spawn point... This way you wouldn't decrease your difficulty, but would not force people to have to start over.

I suggest this because I think a lot of people out there in LBP land don't really want to replay levels. That means you only have a play or two to convince them to keep going (most of the people are not like the people on this forum, unfortunately (as we are the salt of the earth) :hero

On my levels, the level of difficulty that I would build them at tended to be way to hard for 90% of the people out there (with the apparent exception to Ccubbage - that man is a machine when it comes to hard levels, he loves them).

Honestly not sure why this hasn't gotten lots of attention here yet.

- I mean, the levels which are popular at the moment are very good and deserve attention themselves but this level is really impressive as well.

- There's really not much that I could criticize about it ... I thoroughly enjoyed the level and thought it was extremely well made. The visuals in it were really great. I think the cohesiveness of the materials that you used, as well as the lighting really made this level look great.

The level got 5 stars, a heart from me and I hearted you as well. Definitely looking forward to anything new that you may create.

Just finished playing and I loved it! I loved the visual style of both the Flaming Timberland levels, very reminiscent of the Mm Africa levels, but with a variety of contraptions that make it unique. I can see why some people would like the addition story and while it would be nice, I don't think it's a must considering how well the level flows already.

Great level! Well done!

Thanks a lot. Got to say I've played your levels and loved them

Yeah a story is something I could easily put it. The only reason I haven't is because I was going for MM's style and atmosphere, and I never took any notice of their stories really, looking back at them...could they really be classed as stories? They're very very weak! haha

Personally levels are all about the gameplay and looks to me...there aren't many levels that have stories that are actually worth telling, in my opinion.

To add to this I'm not really a fan of magic mouths, as you can tell from my levels any information that I need to give out I tend to do it in picture form. I just feel a level flows much better when you don't get interrupted

I tend to agree with you there. My stories are all pretty basic and are basically motivation to get from point A to point B. I have a friend who told me that he'd like to see me make a level that is very story based, but I'm kind of like you, I see LBP levels being more about the visuals and gameplay.

Some levels need stories, some don't. Some have awesome machines, some don`t. These levels are pretty much perfect, so I wouldn't worry about one or two people wanting a story.2009-05-01 16:26:00

I loved the first, and when I saw that you made a second one I went to play it very quickly. And it's even better then the first. I like the way you went for a Mm style and feel, as I love the style of the story levels. It had some really unique platforming and puzzles too. I prefer it without a storyline, I don't think a storyline would suit these levels at all, and like yourself I'm more bothered about the gameplay and visuals of a level.

Overall 5 stars and a heart. One of the best levels I've played in a while!

Great work man, u got over 6000 plays and still a ***** rating! (5 stars)

I really love this level and the Mm feeling is even better, now if you could only bump in a boss in pt.3. Something like a stone monster. That would be cool (IMO).

So what would you think of adding a boss?

I'm not really a big boss fan to be honest. There aren't many that I have played and enjoyed too much. The majority of the paintinator bosses can get a bit repetitive in my opinion.

The one boss that I have enjoyed on both looks and game play is the boss at the end of Geostautus' level. Magnificent Ruby, I think.

While it is basically the same as the Sumo boss in the MM's levels, it looked really good and worked perfectly.

Overall though, I'm just not that enthusiastic about bosses, so considering the amount of time that has to go into making one, I can't see me ever wanting to. Things may change though, I think it's all about doing something original, so if I can come up with something that's totally different and not just your average boss fight then maybe

I'm on a new project at the moment too so Flaming Timberland 3 is on the back burner

Thanks It should be coming off the cool levels sometime tonight as it's been a week since it was uploaded. I'm kinda happy about it to be honest, getting sick of the spammers and constant friend requests!

Hopefully it'll stay on page 1 of highest rated though. The first level has been around page 6-7 on highest rated for ages, since I published the second one it's been getting a lot more plays so that has moved up to page 3 too.

I played this last week. A great level, and feels even more polished than the first one - the look got alot more solid and nuanced, and the machinery and mechanics got more complex and connective. A nice long, fun level to run through with people too.2009-05-11 10:23:00

Just thought I'd give this one last chance at some plays

Thanks for all the feedback so far it has been incredible. I'm glad the level has had such a good reception, with the favourited on youtube, spotlight, cool levels page 1 and still on the first page of highest rated, I couldn't ask for anymore

My new project is coming along nicely, so no doubt I will be posting about that on here too!

This one is really really cool. Love the innovative game play. Wonderfully imaginative! Thank you for not making it a race!! ...tough, but not impossible. Mostly thankful, I could find places of safety here and there while I munched on my breakfast.

I like this one much better than your first, although the first was really cool as well. I was really intrigued by your double and sometimes triple switchbacks through a segment once completing yet another puzzle or goal. ..all surrounded by flaming eye candy and innovative platform work.

Only critique I can think of is I would say your level icon doesn't really do it justice. I can understand what you have currently as it matches the theme. However it just doesn't highlight what a truly unique and clever world that is hiding just click away. One thought if you wanted to leave the mask, have a closeup of a partial burning tree or burning wooden area filling 2/3 or maybe 1/3 of the shot and the mask in the foreground as it is currently. Just something to make it pop a bit more.

Nice nice work and can't wait till you publish your next level!!

...though it might be nice to have time to get all the wood smoke out of my sack costume. Does anyone know of a laundry or dry cleaner level?

Thanks

Glad you liked it. Really enjoying making my new level at the minute, it's so different than making my previous one. I found Flaming Timberland 2 really easy because I already made a level in that style so knew what look I wanted and how to use the materials together best. I didn't have to mess around with the materials that much, it was just a matter of thinking up the challenges and puzzles.

With my new one it's totally different, I have to start again with the materials and style so it's really rewarding when get something that looks how you want it and works how you imagined. I can't wait to get it finished and on here for you all to play
