American or Japanese animation?

Archive: 29 posts

Which do you prefer? Cartoons in America, or Animes from Japan?

I personally think that the ones in Japan are far more mature overall than the ones in America - if you dig deep for ones like Elfen Lied and GunGrave.

Elfen Lied the anime doesn't pull any punches, and shows true human nature when unloved and granted power. GunGrave is just epic overall, great music, a good storyline of betrayal, and it has a good mix of sci-fi and mafia-style things to watch.

Bleach I think is fine, though I only read the manga right now. Same for Naruto, slightly less good than Bleach though.

Say which you like and why! Any animation that's either American or Japanese, just say what you prefer and why, or if both, what of both?

Anime of course!
Western animation just doesn't compare, anime beats it in all its elements (escept in senselessness of course )

Well, yoeah, tho what i really meant is that no matter how senseless the story is, they usually stay in scertain "rules" on what's possible and stuff, cartoons discard any rules whenver anything happens.
Did that explain well what i was trying to say?

hmm... yeah i think I understand o_o

Akshully no matter how funny an anime is... there's still some seriousness hidden inside... if you know what i mean.

cartoons will turn into something really senseless Like spongebob!

but spongebob is awesome

Overall, Japanese... But there are a few quality US films. Here are my favorite people:

---Japan
Katsuhiro ?tomo : Akira, Steamboy, Robot Carnival
Mamoru Oshii : Ghost In The Shell, Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade (wrote)
Hayao Miyazaki : TOO MANY TO LIST!
Satoshi Kon : Paprika, Paranoia Agent, Tokyo Godfathers, Perfect Blue
Shinichir? Watanabe : Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo

---US
Brad Bird : The Iron Giant, The Incredibles
Don Bluth : The Secret of NIMH, Dragon's Lair
Bill Plympton : just look him up....

---France
Sylvain Chomet : Triplets Of Belleville

I'm probably forgetting some people, but all these guys are great!

All those guys are visionaries. They're telling a good story, or pushing the boundaries of animation. And they don't throw in retarded singing animals for the sake of higher ticket sales.

(Whatever happened to Disney? They used to make films. Now they make fluff... Pixar is good.)

Miyazaki is the STUFF! I love ALL of his films. ALL OF THEM. OH, and dont double post. You can just edit :3.

Japanese Anime FTW really. There are not many American cartoons that are not serious. They are just so corny!

Japanese Anime on the other hand can have a serious side to it. I love it because it has intricate plots and storylines that just suck you in!

For example.
Byakugan: I watched 10 minutes of this and had to turn it off. What unholy creation IS it! It's just too corny. One of his monsters (And my other point, too many monster and trading card shows in american cartoons) was about to go out for a round but he launched into like a 5 minute speech about not forgetting his past.

Death Note: WOW! This show is GENIUS! You cant think of how Light is going to get himself out of a situation, but then he pulls out an amazing plan! Just totally nuts. His strategies are incredible.

Well, I got Iria & Ryoko hangin on my wall... Also have Scooby, Jessica Rabbit, and Hades, I'll pick and choose the best of both worlds please. Although, nothing compares to Pixar. They are the current standard of which everything can and should be compared.

(ps. I slighted Bugs & Daffy... they don't forgive easily)

I LOVE animation both as an artform and storytelling medium.
So yeah....I kinda adore both.

PS: Gravel, you have Hades on your wall?
Must be my favourite Disney-villain of all time (on par with Jafar)!! James Woods does such an amazing job voicing that character!!

Thanks for all of the responses. O.o

I do enjoy some american-based animations, just as I only enjoy some anime. The majority of anime and american cartoons aren't...well, high quality enough or mature enough for me to enjoy

I gave up on reading Bleach a long long time ago... The power scale just got completely out of hand when Aizen was introduced... each chapter is exactly the same: A huge bad guy confronts ichigo, he claims that he is 10 times stronger than the last guy, he then almost kills him, but somehow Ichigo powers up by pulling a mask out of his *ss, and cuts him in half in a split second with some uber-cool slash panels >_>....

On the other had I still read Naruto, its got its ups and downs but overall its got a much better story and more realistic characters than bleach imo. The creator of bleach will never be able to conclude his story while explaining everything that hasn't been patched up. However, this is all just my opinion, if you like bleach then obviously it appeals to you... its just not my cup o' tea anymore

Anywho... thats off-topic waffle :S
I prefere anime. It generally deals with more real issues and real characters and isn't entirely centered around cuddly-fun humour (although there are some really great western animations that aren't pixar and disney)

Here's a western-made anime! Tekkonkinkreet!
YouTube - Tekkonkinkreet, Hong Kong (by Gorillaz)

Its a beautiful movie, with wonderful action scenes and a sweet style to it. The soundtrack is sweet too, done by and english duo called Plaid.

Depends on the show really. Avatar was brilliant, but I haven't really seen any other American anime, because American anime is quite uncommon. While Japanese animation is abundant, with shows such as Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Elfen Lied, One Piece, Darker than Black, Samurai Champloo, etc. you can't honestly compare it to American animation. They are two separate categories. American animation includes more cartoons, such as Futurama, Family Guy, South Park, Dexter's Laboratory, etc. so it cannot be well compared to Japanese animation because while it focuses mainly on comedy, Japanese animation focuses on telling epic tales of brave heroes and the like, while American cartoons tend to focus far more on comedy while keeping it's characters static, as compared to the character development that occurs or supposedly occurs in Japanese animation. Therefore the question should really be "Cartoons or Anime."

As for me, I enjoy both in my own twisted way.

Also, tbh, I dislike (to put it mildly) Naruto and Bleach. When I watch them, I feel like I sit there the whole time waiting for something to happen. :/

Or maybe you have no taste in good shows. Did you think about that?

Heh I agree with a lot of what you said, both have their own merits, but generally I like to watch things that are entirely different to anything anyone's seen before. Anything that doesn't cling to clich? is the most interesting and fresh

Also what you said about watching naruto/bleach anime I also agree with. I read manga... it takes like 5 mins to read a chapter of manga. It takes 20 mins to watch an anime episode.... your average anime episode has about 10 mins of flashback/intros/previews..... This is why I gave up watching any anime series... its just leeches time like a big juicy leechey thing :S

You do reallize that just like it could be me the one with no tase, there's an equal possibility that you're the one with no taste as well.
And i'm not basing my answer just for personal opinion, but for the fact that a lot, and i mean A LOT of people, not just me, think those 2 really suck, srry if you like them, but that's just personal and public opinion.
Besides, it can also depend on the age as people from different ages like different things.
Well, i don't want to go out of subject too much, so if you want to continue this discussion, please do it through privatre messages.

Japanese anime (especially FILM) tend to be much more sophisticated and even philosophical in nature. They often venture into much darker subject matters, than the western counterpart. Many anime are made strictly for adults. There really isn't even anything to compare much of that to in the US. Code1337 said it well.

We have Disney, Pixar, and Dreamworks all making films either for kids or for 'kids and their parents'. There really aren't any US animated films strictly for adults. (Unless you venture back to the '80s. There's Heavy Metal, which is overated.)

Family Guy and South Park are aimed at an older audience, but they're strictly comedies.

So I guess it all comes down to your personal taste. (If you're like me, and prefer darker and more intellectual subject matter in the film format, check out my previous post. I listed off some very talented filmakers, who I feel are under appreciated by western audiences.)
