Dragon boss ideas?

Archive: 15 posts

Ok I'm currently working on the final level in my Japanese mythology themed level series and I need a suitably epic dragon boss battle to top it off. I've not had much experience creating bosses and the 2 I created before were pretty simplistic.

So does anyone have any good ideas of how to fight the boss without just resorting to the usual jump on the bosses back and hit its weak point? Bare in mind I can't use the paintinator or jetpacks as it would be totally out of place with the level theme.

I've never made a boss and am not great at building but usually have lots of ideas that I have no idea how to make work.

A few ideas for you :

Maybe require the player to activate several switches in the area which when all are activated cause a landslide to crush the boss or perhaps drop a massive amount of 'water' on it to drown it (either using droplets with mag keys on or loads of paintballs to look like water and a paint switch on the boss set to whatever amount you choose )

Alternatively how about setting up some sort of trap in the area such as a large pit that you have to lure the boss into. You could either have the trap activate when the boss is in the right place or else make it so that the player has to activate the trap at the right time.

I have no idea how to do that but i'm guessing you do and hope that helps.

Thanks for the ideas. I already did the first one on another boss I made. You had to pull a series of levers to basically flood the chamber you're in. I like the second idea though. Perhaps just having it chase you untill you lure it into something.2009-04-28 12:55:00

i played a level cant remember what its called something basilisk its one of the recent MM picks to beat the boss you have to strip his armour off him then kill him by grabbing a plant which shoots paint and kills him
maybe something along those lines with something that fires paintballs without using the paintinator

Thats basilisk bog, great boss fight. The paintball emmitter is set up as a plant which leaks "sap" onto the boss, so you can emmit paintballs as a weapon if you are a little imaginative. But you have to jump about and grab the armour first to remove it.

Old computer games are great for boss fights. A good example is the original legacy of kain:soul reaver, where most of the bosses could be hurt directly, so were more like a puzzle-solving / platforming exercise than a fight. See if you can find a walkthrough for that game / vids on youtube to get some ideas.

What if you made a cannon (with a fuse) that the player must light by using the dragons fire breath. I'm not sure how your dragon looks, but in my head, I picture something similar to the boss fight in the Metropolis story modes, where the guy shoots from overhead and you have to bounce the fire logs back up to kill him. Instead, your dragon can climb down the top, and blow fire toward the player on the ground. The player then has move the cannon so that the fuse gets lit and then the cannon fires.

If you wanted to add more difficulty, maybe the player will have to load the cannon first.

Thanks for all the ideas. Keep them coming.

Yeah, I was trying to think back to dragon bosses in old 2D games for inspiration. Couldn't really remember any though.

I thought I'd post a few pics of the work in progress dragon to give people an idea of what it looks like and how it might work.

...and one quick sneak preview of the level.

I was thinking of having a section where it would chase you through a corridor and you just have to escape. Sort of like the skeleton truck boss thing from the wedding level in the single player. Then later on you would actually have to fight it.

The only thing I can think of right now is that you first have to damage the head (Possibly with a cannon or something.) which will make it lower so you can climb on its back. You run along it's back jumping across various obstacles and then use its tail to reach a higher area where you have to activate a lever or switch or something to bring down the roof and kill it.

How about once you go to a certain part near it's feet/head, shackles with winches are emitted (for instance, one of the front leg shackles is connected to one of the back leg shackles). Then, once all of the shackles are on, the winches pull the legs together and make the dragon topple over to its death.2009-04-30 11:58:00

Interesting idea. How would you go about making the shackles connect to teh dragon though?2009-04-30 12:12:00

I don't know if this fits in with your ddragon concept, but what if the dragon was nocturnal and in a cave? You have to a) knock a hole in the roof or b) angle a mirror so light from a hole in the sky shines on his face, and at that point he gets blinded and drops his head down?

The angled mirror is a concept i've been thinking about trying (haven't yet). It's kinda awkward due to the angle of reflection. I think you'd have to move it via motor bolts / wobble bolts to get a realistic effect (think winching system to fit in with your feudal japanese thing.

As for shackles, it depends how much the dragons legs move during the fight?

Actually you're spot on. The dragon is inside a cave you end up getting trapped in. I like the idea of using a mirror to shine a light. Just wondering how to make it actually look like a mirror without it just looking like a giant spotlight which would look really out of place.

I'll have a fiddle around with it tomorrow. Thanks for the idea.

If you use that purple and silver metal material in a very narrow rectangle it shows up as all silver in profile then you could take a photo of your background in foggy light to use as a sticker on the face of the mirror so it looks like it's reflecting the surroundings a bit. Could also try to put a very thin layer of clear glass over that to get the reflection that the glass material has naturally to show up. It would be subtle but very cool.

Spotlights would be my choice for the reflected sunlight. Just make them dim enough that they don't have huge shafts of light and bring the radius out on them so they are diffuse at the edges and I think that would look fantastic!

Can't wait to see the level finished - looks amazing so far!

Yep that is the problem. What I'm thinking is you'd have a spotlight hidden inside a block of gold metal. the "mirror" is on a wobble bolt and the lamp is on a wobble bolt attached to the mirror, so the angle of the light moves twice as fast as the mirror.

The other thing I'd do about the mirror is have it not reflecting to begin with then knock a hole in the ceiling which shines a shaft on the mirror. Then after 0.1-0.2s delay the mirror light comes on. I know that isn't realistic but it hammers in the reflection idea.

edit - I was writing while morganna posted, just want to say:

Genious. Thats all.

search for drDhio and play his dream-jar level. There is a mirrors puzzle in that which looks like it works exactly as I described.2009-05-05 15:08:00

Thanks I'll have a look.

The dragon boss is currently on hold though. A save glitch deleted my dragon and the level it was in along with it...#breathes deeply#...so it's something I'll probably go back to in the future.
