Favourite Retro Games

Archive: 24 posts

Hey everyone just wondering what everyone's favourite retro games are! This includes all games from the 5th Generation (PS1... strange to think of it as a retro console but I guess it is now) back to the 3rd Generation (NES). Handheld consoles like the Gameboy are included and I'll throw in the GBA for good measure. In particular I'd like to know your favorites for the following consoles:

PS1
GBA
Sega Megadrive/Genesis
NES
SNES
Gameboy & Gameboy Color

Be sure to add other consoles or really old PC games if you like .

My picks:

PS1: MGS
GBA: Metroid Fusion but I haven't really got into many others.
Megadrive: Hard to pick one but I'll go with Streets of Rage 2.
NES: Bionic Commando... don't like Megaman, any other great games for this console?
SNES: Actraiser but again haven't really got into many others.
Gameboy: Probably my favourite Mario game - Super Mario Land. Played this so much on journeys when I was a kid. Closely following by 2.

PS1: Um... not too many options here for me XD. Let's see... Metal Gear Solid probably
GBA: golden sun... I guess :/
Sega Megadrive/Genesis: ... Never really played lol, um... I have tried the Sonic rereleases, and they were good, so maybe Sonic 3... wait, eh, something from sonic megadrive... eh I forget
NES: Um... pass? XD
SNES: Chrono tigger I suppose (played on PS1 though). Maybe Tales of Phantasia if I ever played it
Gameboy & Gameboy Color: Tetris is always fun and addicting
N64: Ogre Battle 64 was a fairly decent strategy game with one of the best stories in old gaming history :O.

Retro, huh?

Well, I think the oldest games I still feel like popping in once in a while are :

Mechwarrior 2 (PC/PSX)
YouTube - MechWarrior 2 Intro

Warcraft 1 (PC)
YouTube - Blizzard Warcraft 1 [ MS-DOS Version ] intro opening scene

Doom 1 (PC)

I sincerely miss the 16-bit days of DOS... from every perspective.

If I knew then what I knew now I could make a fortune.

it feels weird calling ps1 and gba games retro, i still play most of them as if they'd come out yesterday

PS1 - spyro 1
GBA - any of the zelda games
Sega Megadrive/Genesis - sonic's the only megadrive game i know
SNES/NES - i always get mixed up between nes and snes games, but i'd probably say chrono trigger (nothing else springs to mind)
Gameboy & Gameboy Color - any of the pokemon games

I really miss graphic adventure games... like Full Throttle or Space Quest... my friend bought me Full Throttle with the strategy guide for my birthday the year it came out.

Back in my day, games didn't support fancy new technology such as "TCP/IP" and "Split-screen". If you wanted to play a multiplayer game, you had to have a LAN connection. 2009-04-27 16:26:00

Yeah, don't get me started on the adventure games.
The Monkey Island games, the original Sam & Max, the Indiana Jones point & click adventures. Those were all really good games!!

Yeah totally, LucasArts should just stick to that instead of licensing mostly mediocre star wars games. ... GRIM FANDANGO!... <3 No game will top that anytime soon...2009-04-27 16:32:00

Grim Fandango was awesome as well!! "You can't hide from the Grim Reaper. Especially when he's got a gun"
My personal favourite still remains the Monkey Island series (except 4, hated that one) "I am Guybrush Threepwood, mighty pirate"
Never got around to playing Full Throttle though...

...and yes, Lucasarts should really start making those games again. The one thing they were really good at.

PS: Can anyone say nostalgia?

I adore Monkey Island... everything about it is just done so well. Murray is the best. lol Full Throttle has an epic story like Grim Fandango but unfortunately the gameplay is a little shallow by comparison.. still, one of my favs by far. Just thinking about Monkey Island wants to make me dance to its theme song.2009-04-27 16:41:00

Wow, seeing that montage makes me want to play this again so bad.
