Are Glitches Cheats?

Archive: 17 posts

I asked this on a other thread, but I think it should be a question anyways. Do you think Glitches in games are cheats? Please explain why it is or not. Or if you feel some are and some are not please explain.

Here is what I feel on it, I am on the side of that it is not a cheat, specially when more people know. But I believe it is part of the game than why not take advantage of it. Now if you are going in and doing something with the programming, like chaging stuff to help you than that is a cheat but if you are able to go through a wall in a game and shoot someone than why not, it is part of the game and usually glitches are spread out there and everyone soon or later finds out.
I would like it to see where the company finds a glitch to post it somewhere so we all know about it and how to do it. But hey if the they made a mistake and now you are able to get to somewhere on the map that was not suppose to happen well why not take advantage of it.
So what are your thoughts on this, and I am not talking about lagging either. Just glitches in the game.

No, I don't. You don't have to search for a code or anything like that - it was built right into the game. It's essentially a gameplay element, albeit a broken one.2008-08-28 01:02:00

If the glitch can be used to exploit the game then ofcourse its a cheat, but if it isn't an exploit then its not cheating. Basicaly it depends on the glitch and the player.2008-08-28 01:03:00

I think it depends on the glitch. If it somehow makes you invulnerable or gives you a distinct advantage, it's cheating. Flying(floating, walking in air) in an FPS like CoD4 is cheating. Hiding behind something that makes you invincible but, you're still able to get kills is cheating. If you're able to get into an area you weren't meant to get into but, someone on the outside has just as good a shot at killing you as you have of killing them, it's fair game.

When a glitch kills you... well... that just sucks.

That's all just IMO though. Personally, I've known about lots of glitches but, never exploited them in ranked games because, they were overly advantageous in my favor.

I play games for fun though so, my opinion is based on the fact that I really don't care THAT much about winning. It's all about having fun.

They can be if used in the correct fashion, if you exploit them for fun though, and it's not a competitive match, then it's fine imo.2008-08-28 02:17:00

its still cheating...

Not always. It depends on the situation. Theres a glitch in all GTA's where you sometimes fall through the floor... fall for a while then land where you just were. Doesn't do a thing so it's not a cheat - just a glitch.

I only consider it cheating if you use glitches to gain an unfair advantage, otherwise, it's fine imo.2008-08-28 03:33:00

When i first thought about it I would have said no its not. But after some thought and remembering a particular glitch in Warhawk where if you parked a tank just so, you could kill people from across the level without getting killed, I changed my mind and definitely think a glitch is a cheat. Short and sweet if it is not part of intended gameplay from the developer than it is a cheat.2008-08-28 03:46:00

Great opinion's on the subject, but you all seem to say if it gives the player a advantage than it is a cheat. I am just wondering as a future game designer and it is good to read your opinions. I do wonder why is it a cheat if everyone can use the glitch for a advantage, if one person can use it than anyone can, now yeah games are about fun but why not use a great spot to get some wins? Now I don't like people who purposly lag or PC gamers who play with the code for a advantage, but if you can go up a wall and have great spot to post up, why is it a cheat? Again I am just wondering as a designer and a gamer, so thanks for the great responses so far.

Also lets hear from anyone who has used a glitch, why do you use it and if you feel you are cheating?

But not everyone knows how to do glitches or refuses to use them because thats not how the game is intended to be played. As long as its not creating an unfair advantage then I haven't got a problem with it. For example Gears Of War had loads of stupid glitches like being able to roadie run while shooting or running straight into someone and automatically chainsawing them that to me creates an unfair advantage and I refused to do it. Your argument is that if one person can do it then everyone should now imagine if everyone did the roadie run glitch in every game of Gears! It would be become the worst game ever. Now in COD 4 theres certain parts in levels where you can get to the tops of buildings yet its just a case of finding a way to get up there normally not going through the map or having to press specific buttons so that IMO is not a glitch and was just clever designing by the developers so is aceptable.

I feel if it's a singleplayer game, then using glitches would be acceptable, as you're not competing with anyone else. TES IV: Oblivion would be an example. A few glitches in there allow you to do some things easier (for instance, the "Paintbrush" glitch allows you to use paintbrushes as steps if done right, allowing you to access normally inaccessible areas), but nobody else suffers for your gains. They can choose to replicate the glitch, or they can ignore it, and nobody other than the glitcher is affected in any way.2008-08-28 13:36:00

Okay I can understand your point of view on this, and if the glitch is something that gives a single player a advantage over other players than it is a cheat. Okay I can understand that. Even if other players can do it but they choose not too becasue it is a cheat. Now what if the game company found cheats and posted them on a website so everyone knows who visited the site, is it than a cheat since everyone knows? But I usually a glitch creates a disadvantage to the rest of the players and a game should be equal for everyone than, so I can understand what you are saying.

If the company states that a cheat or glitch is acceptable and made it public knowledge then they must think it doesn't unbalance the game so I personally wouldn't have a problem with that.
