The Good Music Thread

Archive: 94 posts

So in response to the thread asking about where all the good music thread and finding myself wanting to post so much stuff in the "Bands you care about..." and "Best song in last years" threads I decided to make this.

Right here are the rules. The idea is to try and get people onto bands they may never have heard of before. So try and post obscure bands/artists people aren't likely to know. Post a youtube video of one of their tunes or an mp3. Post what you think the genre is and if you like a quick description.

Right go!

Electronica - Modeselector
YouTube - Modeselektor - Godspeed

German band. Supported Radiohead on their recent tour.

Folk - Fleet Foxes
YouTube - Fleet Foxes - White Winter Hymnal

Psychodelic Folk 4 piece from Seattle. Sublime Beach Boys esque vocal melodies abound.

Metal - Boris
YouTube - Boris - Electric (ORIGINAL)

Probably more famour in the rest of the world than in their native Japan. Some of the heaviest rockin metal around.

Hip-Hop - Sole
YouTube - Sole - Da Baddest Poet

Super political, intelligent alt-hip-hop.

Folktronica - Four Tet
YouTube - As serious as your life - Four Tet

Yep that's right folktronica. Tedious genre tag aside it's essentially electronic with a soul. Lots of acoustic organic sounds rather than the usual synths and drum machines.

IDM/Electronica - Secret Mommy
YouTube - Secret Mommy - Kool Aid River

For those of you who thought Aphex Twin wasn't insane enough. Glitch music made almost entirely from found sound and field recordings.

??? - The Books
YouTube - The Books - Enjoy your worries you may never have them again

I honestly don't know what genre you could call them. Sort of folktronica mixed with sound/field recording montages and audio monologues. Perhaps it's not even music. It is awesome though.

Try to include the genre in your post as well. I think it helps people decide whether or not they want to give it a listen.

...and as much as I love the Artic Monkeys and that song they're not really an obscure band that people are unlikely to not already know about.

Genre: Rock/Distortion
Title: Atlas
Group: Battles

I've never been a big fan of that track to be honest. I much prefer Tras.

Battles are often dubbed Math Rock because of it's precise, complex, angular sound. You should check out Don Cabollero whom some of the Battles members came from. And also check out Shellec a band often credited with creating the genre.

YouTube - SHELLAC - MY BLACK ***

And also this band.

YouTube - Tortoise: "Seneca"

Best sounding drums ever recorded in my opinion. Just skip to 1.55.

I listen to unusual bands and music but still not that "obscure".

I'd like to share with you about "Tweaker", a music project of Chris Vrenna. Must be obscure because YouTube is devoid of any great videos or the ones of the best songs but anyways... Here goes, it's rock, electro, mostly instrumental (regarding the album) and sometimes progressive. It's an happy mix that sounds great. Oh another particularity is that the singers are invited only. This means that pretty much all tracks that sings is by a different person!

I'm having a hard time loading all these embedded video links for some reason.
They just show up as a blank space. And since there's no band name or anything I don't even know what video's you guys are posting

Maybe make sure to post a Band Name and Track name above the link.

As for my obscure music, which I've suggested in the "favourite bands no one's heard of thread":

The Knife - We Share Our Mothers Health
Electropop/Electronica
YouTube - We Share Our Mother's Health - The Knife

Honey is Cool - Nacht Hart
Altenative/Indie
YouTube - honey is cool -- Nach heart

Honey is Cool is the Knife's lead singer, Karin Dreijer's old band. They're not playing anymore.

Autechre - Bike
Glitch/Ambient
YouTube - Autechre - Bike

Just a sweet fan video I found. Some people wouldn't consider half of what autechre do... as music :S

You have great music taste sir Did you check any of the others out like Blonde Redhead?

And yeah, even though Radiohead are my fave band i'm currently listening to other stuff, as i've listened to them constantly for about a year now xD

Though i am finding it difficult to find albums that i can get into as much as Radiohead ones

Woah... I did not expect Blonde Redhead to be fronted by a black haired Japanese girl! Thats some really cool stuff, I'll have to get my filthy pirate hands on it!

I you're looking for something you can really "get into" definitely check out The Knife... I've been listening to them daily for the last year, including Fever Ray and Honey is Cool (lead singer's solo act and previous band, respectively).

Also check this out:

M?m - Green Grass of Tunnel
Electronic/Glitch
YouTube - Múm ????* Green Grass Of Tunnel (Shinjuku Liquid Room)

They're from Iceland and are in a way a cross between the Knife and sigur ros. The girl on bass sings like a kid, but unfortunately she's left the band now

I love that song It's on Screaming Masterpiece isn't it.
Don't ( )Pirate yourself 23 from BR (the album name). The others are alright, but nowhere near the standard of 23.
Explosions in The Sky and Mogwai are pretty good also, but i prefer Sigur Ros.
Amiina are also pleasant

I'll check out The Knife now

Same
If i'm honest i've pirated basically every album i've got... and then bought the ones i've thought worthy after. Though i've never bought Blonde Redhead's 23.... i really should.
I once read though... someone said that Music is a form of art. And you wouldn't buy a painting without looking at it, so why buy an album without listening to it? I'm not suggesting piracy though
But i bought Radiohead's box set at xmas. And paid ?6 for IR on their site when it came out
And I've bought everything Sigur Ros (i've even got my name printed in the latest one xD).
Oh and i'm a collector of Interpols stuff... i've spent ?120 on a 4 track CD of theirs.... LOL. Worth it, only 500 worldwide. And i got another one just as rare for an xmas present

Off topic a bit there... here's a song i love, even if it is from a cheesy movie:
YouTube - Hans Zimmer - Injection

Hans Zimmer is truly amazing. His piece for Gladiator was perfect too:
YouTube - Gladiator Soundtrack - 17 - Now We Are Free

Both have Lisa Gerrard singing, such a beautiful voice.

Some good music so far. I'll from some soundtracks out there since a few people have posted some.

Cliff Martinez - Solaris
YouTube - 02 First Sleep-Cliff Martinez

Phillip Glass - Mad Rush (Used in Fog Of War)
YouTube - Philip Glass - Mad Rush

One of my favourite pieces of music of all time. Absolutley spine tingling. Got to see him perform live in Japan as well and speak to him briefly afterwards. You could tell me I was about to die and put this piece on and I'd feel totally at ease.

Clint Mansell - Requiem For A Dream

Superb soundtrack and a superb film.

Time for some guilty pleasures... songs you know you shouldn't like but you do! hehehe.

Girls Aloud - Turn To Stone
YouTube - Girls Aloud - Turn To Stone
I also like Call The Shots. Haha, oh dear.

Okay back to normal:
Moby - Extreme Ways
Excuse the little intro, it was used on the Bourne films as many of you will recognise.
YouTube - Moby - Extreme Ways (The Bourne Trilogy)

And finally... this one is awesome... and the music video is just as mad haha.
Chemical Brothers - Midnight Madness

Aphex Twin - Donkey Rhubarb
Electronic/Braindance/Ambient

YouTube - Aphex Twin - Donkey Rhubarb

I would have posted his more popular videos such as windowlicker... but I think chris cunningham's sick visuals would end in tears here

Holy moly! I don't know if anybody else is interested in Interpol (one of my fave bands ) but their lead singer Paul Banks has just announced he's coming out with a solo album on 4th August. He's also giving himself the alias of Julian Plenti for the album. The album is called.... 'Julian Plenti is... The Eraser Skyscraper'.

I like Interpol. Love that guys voice. It'll be interesting to see what the solo project sounds like. One of the best things about Interpol is that they have a really tight rhythm section. I can imagine his solo project being more electronic orientated.

Which reminds me of another singer I really like. Beirut.

I've heard of Beirut before... and i'm gunna guess that's cause you've mentioned them before xD

With Interpol... I was kind of obsessed for a period of time... here's my interpol collection:

Any Brits who are interested in non-commercial music should know of New Model Army, but I don't think they're too well known in the USA. Anyway, here's a few of their songs...

Modest Mouse have a new EP coming out in August. I think it has a name, but it's escaping me at the moment.

Here's another confirmed song to be on the EP, Guilty Cocker Spaniel:YouTube - Modest Mouse- 2/24/09-Guilty Cocker Spaniel (NEW SONG)

It's really got an old MM feel, kind of like Paper Thin Walls meets something from Long Drive...

So I like me some music... Read through the thread though and didn't find anything new, so I got to thinking, what if I am the Keeper of the New?

To give you an idea where my heads at... (IMO) the best of whats went before:

The Books (Whoa baby)
Autechre (niiice)
MUM (awesome)
Phillip Glass (been listening to Einstein on the Beach for like 20 years)
Cliff Martinez (Do tasty moving picture licks)
The Faint (I think maybe earlier the better)
Arctic Monkeys and Thom Yorke great but heardly unknown...

So what I suggest (an asterik will mean you shouldn't live w/o)

Thanks a nice ol' list ye got there Gravel.

I got the Blade Runner ost recently... one of my favourite movies
I had a listen to Bedtime for Robots..... that's what I call.. EVIL MUSIC. Much like the Residents.

I'm surprised someone around here likes Autechre too! They have made some of the most beautiful and some of the most unlistenable music imo. I keep coming back to their more obscure stuff and realising how great it is and how little it sounds like anything else... its like having an epiphany every time I listen to them.

Couldn't agree more, i'm a huge fan, I have just about anything they've ever released and after all those years they still keep surprising me.

This place needs dusting off >_>

Okay, I dunno what other people think of this music, but I think its proper genius

The Tuss - GX1 Solo
Braindance/Acid

YouTube - The Tuss - GX1 Solo

The GX1 is a reaaally rare synth, that barely anyone in UK owns. And Aphex Twin is one of them. Also this song is in 6/8 time. Kinda like traditional Irish music
Yep, I'm pretty sure The Tuss IS just Aphex Twin... its just too obvious. But I doubt anyone here knows much about Aphex besides 1 or 2 people.

Ah yeah, Polygon Window ftw

I love If it Really is Me, and Portreath Harbour and Redruth school off that album.

Well, The Tuss is released on Richard D Jame's label "Rephlex". They're apparently denying that the Tuss is indeed just aphex twin himself, but all the analogue sounds and acid lines just all point in his direction. He even played a couple of Tuss songs when I saw him at Oxegen 08 ^^

The Tuss is credited as written and recorded by Brian and Karen Tregaskin......... I mean, what kinda made up names are those. And Richard is a serious media trickster, he really doesn't give a crap what people think of his music or himself...
Yeeeah... I spend too much time on Wikipedia. But really, I'm not bothered about who it is either, I just enjoy the music.

Well yeah, I meant on these forums! Seems like Gravel, Sosaku, me and you are the only people here who like this kinda music! And I agree, Aphex was doing something completely different to everything else when he first started, and his influence has stretched out to so many genres. I'm happy he's still making some of my favourite new music.

Grizzly Bear is sooo good.

I just found this thread, but I'm excited because all I listen to is indie music.

Here's a few bands that are more appealing to everyone, yet still moderately obscure:
Bloc Party- Banquet

Vampire Weekend- A-Punk (I like other songs of theirs more, but this is their most popular:

aaaand Beck- E-Pro (I looooove Beck)

That's all for now, If you like these though, ask me about other bands I like. I have a huuuuge library of indie music

edit: I don't know why, but the video for Beck isn't working.

Woah! O_o okay, I think what you did here was list off your whole music library. The point of this thread is to give people some previews or info on bands they probably never heard of before... ie obscure music.
Most of those bands are really main stream, and not relevant, but some of them make me want to barf (blink 182, The Fray, Good Charlotte, Linkin Park)

And to be hippocritical, "good music" is completely subjective, so where I don't like those bands, lots of people consider them "good". But it'd be nice if you posted some info, or a video... so people will know something other than a name.

Another great electro rock-ish band that no one cares about.

IAMX is the name, it's the guy that had the band Sneaker Pimps during the late 90s. It's part electro, part rock, part trip hop. Quite very british. Awesome.

That's your opinion, which is absolutely fine, not everyone is going to like everything. But just because it is mainstream doesn't mean that it isn't good. But for "obscure" bands, check out:

Thanks haha. I need to get Information. I've heard from others that it's the best.

Here's a few more...I'll throw in some different genres.

If you don't check out anything else I suggest, listen to Menomena. They are my favorite band, and practically no one knows about them. It's really sad. I went to one of their concerts, which turned out to be in a small bar in Jacksonville FL, and played pool with the guys and talked to their drummer by myself for about half an hour. I loved how personal it was, but it's a shame considering how great their music is...

YouTube - Menomena - Wet And Rusting

And here is the guy who I'd consider to be the best lyric writer of our generation: Conor Oberst...Commonly known by his band, "Bright Eyes"

YouTube - "Souled Out!!!" Conor Oberst and the Mystic Valley Band

And here's a fan made music video of a song called "Oslo In The Summertime" by Of Montreal (There is no official video)

I oughta jump into this electro-love-session.

I'm not huge into electronic music, but there are bits that I ----ING LOVE.

Some electro mentioned here I listen to on occasion, like Aphex Twin and Autechre, and I didn't catch Biosphere if it was brought up (sorry if I missed it), but they've got a great album called Substrata.

But there is one group - Pitcard, I know you mentioned them earlier and linked to one of the coolest videos around (Dayvan Cowboy) - but if I were to list one source of music which provides the soundtrack to my life, it would probably be Boards of Canada.

I LOVE THESE GUYS.

YouTube - boards of canada - roygbiv

Here's an interesting, unofficial video for Roygbiv, which is a collection of strange images from the 80s, some of which looks, if nothing else, like a weird 80s corporate commercial if directed by Terry Gilliam.

Some of my favorite BOC tunes:

1969 and In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country (I consider these 2 a single 2-parter)
Kid for Today
Olson
Roygbiv
Dayvan Cowboy
Julie and Candy
The Beach at Redpoint
Dawn Chorus:
YouTube - Boards of Canada - Dawn Chorus

And, because they're right underneath BOC in my playlist, I'd like to mention Broken Social Scene while I'm at it, because it's one of my absolute favorite bands around, and these guys put on a killer, killer live show if you can manage to ever find one.

One other addition: Max Richter. He's a composer who uses a mix of electronic and classical orchestra in his music, which is very cinematic and quite gorgeous. It's Boards of Canada meets a Tarkovsky movie. Some of my favorite music. Here's one particularly ghostly track which was a major tonal influence on me when I made my first short film (www.whoisedwardcole.com)

Anyhow, here's some other British stuff. Aren't they making the best music right?
In my part of the world I am the only one to care for them so I don't know if they are REALLY obscure but they sure rock. It's called Kasabian and they are electro-ish rock sound. I love them.

Haven't been around for a while but wow this thread has really picked up steam.

A friend introduced me to Lali Puna at a BBQ a few weeks ago. Very good stuff.

I think I'll kick it old school with some ye olde classics.

YouTube - Can - Sing Swan Song

Can - Sing Swan Songs
Nothing beats Damo Suzuki era Can. What can I say. Sounds like Radiohead only it was recorded in 1971.

YouTube - Barabajagal - Donovan

Donovan - Barabajagal
Not really obscure but certainly less known than many of his contemporaries. Beck learnt all his best moves from this man.

YouTube - Talk Talk - EDEN - 1988

Talk Talk - Eden
I'm sure you've heard of Talk Talk before but while they're probably best known for their throw away 80's synth pop tunes their glorious final 2 albums remain little know gems. The band essentially pulled a Radiohead. They split with their label and set out to create something groundbreaking and original sounding nothing like anything they'd done before. Amazing stuff that left a clear influence on the post-rock scene and in bands like Radiohead.

YouTube - Raymond Scott - Manhattan Research, Inc. (6/7)

Raymond Scott - Manhattan Research
Last but certainley not least Raymond Scott! Sounds a little like Boards of Canada or Aphex Twin only... this was made in the 50's yep... the 50's. He created the first ever ambient electro album, he was Moog's mentor and invented eveything from the very first synths, drum machines and sequencers to electric alarm clocks and auto-scanning radios. Mind boggling.

Sosaku your stock is rising in my eyes... you were able to connect several influences for me... Carl Stalling, Secret Seven, Devo, Kraftwerk, tangerine Dream, and Mark Mothersberg... well done... In the vein of the classic... you cant miss:
YouTube - Cybernaut from LP Zero Time by Tonto's Expanding Head Band

YouTube - TONTO & Stevie Wonder
The room was the synthesizer.... simply amazing.
