The Good Music Thread

So in response to the thread asking about where all the good music thread and finding myself wanting to post so much stuff in the "Bands you care about..." and "Best song in last years" threads I decided to make this.

Right here are the rules. The idea is to try and get people onto bands they may never have heard of before. So try and post obscure bands/artists people aren't likely to know. Post a youtube video of one of their tunes or an mp3. Post what you think the genre is and if you like a quick description.

Yep that's right folktronica. Tedious genre tag aside it's essentially electronic with a soul. Lots of acoustic organic sounds rather than the usual synths and drum machines.

For those of you who thought Aphex Twin wasn't insane enough. Glitch music made almost entirely from found sound and field recordings.

I've never been a big fan of that track to be honest. I much prefer Tras.

Battles are often dubbed Math Rock because of it's precise, complex, angular sound. You should check out Don Cabollero whom some of the Battles members came from. And also check out Shellec a band often credited with creating the genre.

I listen to unusual bands and music but still not that "obscure".

I'd like to share with you about "Tweaker", a music project of Chris Vrenna. Must be obscure because YouTube is devoid of any great videos or the ones of the best songs but anyways... Here goes, it's rock, electro, mostly instrumental (regarding the album) and sometimes progressive. It's an happy mix that sounds great. Oh another particularity is that the singers are invited only. This means that pretty much all tracks that sings is by a different person!

I'm having a hard time loading all these embedded video links for some reason.

I love Radiohead, Thom Yorke, Bjork and Sigur Ros too

The Eraser and In Rainbows were albums I just listened to almost every day for few months each when the came out. I'm kinda bored of radiohead now though, there're still great, I just listened to them too much ^^		2009-04-27 00:16:00

I love that song It's on Screaming Masterpiece isn't it.
Don't ( )Pirate yourself 23 from BR (the album name). The others are alright, but nowhere near the standard of 23.
Explosions in The Sky and Mogwai are pretty good also, but i prefer Sigur Ros.
Amiina are also pleasant

If i'm honest i've pirated basically every album i've got... and then bought the ones i've thought worthy after. Though i've never bought Blonde Redhead's 23.... i really should.
I once read though... someone said that Music is a form of art. And you wouldn't buy a painting without looking at it, so why buy an album without listening to it? I'm not suggesting piracy though
But i bought Radiohead's box set at xmas. And paid ?6 for IR on their site when it came out
And I've bought everything Sigur Ros (i've even got my name printed in the latest one xD).
Oh and i'm a collector of Interpols stuff... i've spent ?120 on a 4 track CD of theirs.... LOL. Worth it, only 500 worldwide. And i got another one just as rare for an xmas present

Did you know if Bjork married Thom (a perfect couple in terms of music haha) Bjorks name would be Bjork Yorke. LOL
(Though Bjork is actually pronounced byerk)

And people... something amazing has just happened. I have bought an album without listening to the whole thing off itunes! It's the soundtrack to Sunshine (good movie, stellar soundtrack).

Holy moly! I don't know if anybody else is interested in Interpol (one of my fave bands ) but their lead singer Paul Banks has just announced he's coming out with a solo album on 4th August. He's also giving himself the alias of Julian Plenti for the album. The album is called.... 'Julian Plenti is... The Eraser Skyscraper'.

I like Interpol. Love that guys voice. It'll be interesting to see what the solo project sounds like. One of the best things about Interpol is that they have a really tight rhythm section. I can imagine his solo project being more electronic orientated.

Which reminds me of another singer I really like. Beirut.

Two of my mates who are into Interpol, went to see their drummer do a DJ set in dublin. They said it was pretty cool, but I'm not a huge fan of interpol myself so I didn't go.

I like the voice and rhythm and all... but the clangy guitars get on my nerves :S

Um... I think this thread is for posting obscure music that people wouldn't easily hear about. Iron maiden, Metallica and avenges sevenfold are some of the first metal bands that pop into my head... although I don't even like listening to metal.. bar Primus!... I had a listen to Bedtime for Robots..... that's what I call.. EVIL MUSIC. Much like the Residents.

I'm surprised someone around here likes Autechre too! They have made some of the most beautiful and some of the most unlistenable music imo. Couldn't agree more, i'm a huge fan, I have just about anything they've ever released and after all those years they still keep surprising me.

Well, The Tuss is released on Richard D Jame's label "Rephlex". They're apparently denying that the Tuss is indeed just aphex twin himself, but all the analogue sounds and acid lines just all point in his direction. He even played a couple of Tuss songs when I saw him at Oxegen 08 ^^

The Tuss is credited as written and recorded by Brian and Karen Tregaskin......... I mean, what kinda made up names are those. And Richard is a serious media trickster, he really doesn't give a crap what people think of his music or himself...

Woah! O_o okay, I think what you did here was list off your whole music library. The point of this thread is to give people some previews or info on bands they probably never heard of before... ie obscure music.
Most of those bands are really main stream, and not relevant, but some of them make me want to barf (blink 182, The Fray, Good Charlotte, Linkin Park)

And to be hippocritical, "good music" is completely subjective, so where I don't like those bands, lots of people consider them "good". But it'd be nice if you posted some info, or a video... so people will know something other than a name.

Another great electro rock-ish band that no one cares about.

IAMX is the name, it's the guy that had the band Sneaker Pimps during the late 90s. It's part electro, part rock, part trip hop. Quite very british. Awesome.

That's your opinion, which is absolutely fine, not everyone is going to like everything. But just because it is mainstream doesn't mean that it isn't good. But for "obscure" bands, check out:

Here's a few more...I'll throw in some different genres.

If you don't check out anything else I suggest, listen to Menomena. They are my favorite band, and practically no one knows about them. It's really sad. I went to one of their concerts, which turned out to be in a small bar in Jacksonville FL, and played pool with the guys and talked to their drummer by myself for about half an hour. I loved how personal it was, but it's a shame considering how great their music is...

I oughta jump into this electro-love-session.

I'm not huge into electronic music, but there are bits that I ----ING LOVE.

Some electro mentioned here I listen to on occasion, like Aphex Twin and Autechre, and I didn't catch Biosphere if it was brought up (sorry if I missed it), but they've got a great album called Substrata.

But there is one group - Pitcard, I know you mentioned them earlier and linked to one of the coolest videos around (Dayvan Cowboy) - but if I were to list one source of music which provides the soundtrack to my life, it would probably be Boards of Canada.

One other addition: Max Richter. He's a composer who uses a mix of electronic and classical orchestra in his music, which is very cinematic and quite gorgeous. It's Boards of Canada meets a Tarkovsky movie. Some of my favorite music. Haven't been around for a while but wow this thread has really picked up steam.

A friend introduced me to Lali Puna at a BBQ a few weeks ago. Very good stuff.

I think I'll kick it old school with some ye olde classics.

I'm sure you've heard of Talk Talk before but while they're probably best known for their throw away 80's synth pop tunes their glorious final 2 albums remain little know gems. The band essentially pulled a Radiohead. They split with their label and set out to create something groundbreaking and original sounding nothing like anything they'd done before. Amazing stuff that left a clear influence on the post-rock scene and in bands like Radiohead.

Last but certainley not least Raymond Scott! Sounds a little like Boards of Canada or Aphex Twin only... this was made in the 50's yep... the 50's. He created the first ever ambient electro album, he was Moog's mentor and invented eveything from the very first synths, drum machines and sequencers to electric alarm clocks and auto-scanning radios. This sounds really good, i especially like that part around 2.00, pretty amazing this was made almost 60 years ago
