Joint object visibility discussion.

Archive: 9 posts

With the release of the new creator pack, now you can make certain joint objects invisible.

Which is cool for many reasons, but I think half of the visual appeal to LBP is the "toy box" look to it. Meaning that everything makes sense in it's own little world, and I think that making joint objects invisible in some cases takes away that attraction.

Not saying that I don't think the option shouldn't be there. But personally for me there is a dillema of when it should and shouldn't be approriate to use it!

I'm working on my second level, and it starts out with you in an airplane lowering to a landing point by winch. I personally thought it looked better with the winch visible, because once again, I like the "toy box" appeal.

But I'm afraid that poeple might be critical of that, you know?

Bigger dillema is that I have many enemies that are mid-air via elastic, and they swing around and what not, but I can't decide now if it looks better visible or not.

Not really sure what I'm trying to get across here, just curios about what everyone else thinks.

I do agree with a few points you've made.

One, it does sometimes look better if the joints are visible, and if it does, you should go for it.

Yes I must agree that people will probably hate on you for keeping your joints visible, but think about it, you shouldn't really be creating for others, so it doesn't really matter what they think as long as your having fun doing it.

And finally, I think that having your joints invisible is a great addition, I love it and I use it very frequently in my current level, though in some cases you should keep the objects visible (like sticker switches, spring bolts, etc...)

And by the way, this didn't come out with the creator pack, it was released with Cornish Yarg.

You make some good points, but I don't think ALL people will be so critical if you don't make joints invisible. I think a lot of people will know when and where to use them. Also I think a lot of people will get tired of people not leaving them visible. It's really very arbitrary so who really knows.2009-04-24 03:50:00

It's called "art styles". You like that toy look. It's awesome but it's just a style with MANY other valid ones existing out there. It's create that the game gives us more and more options to personalise our levels and create our styles.

To put it simply, if your level has a toy-like look, then keep'em if you want a more refined and artistic view, vanish them! (unless they actually fit in on the area)
Besides, you don't have to make all invisible or all visible, maybe make soome visible and others not for an even beter effect.

Right now I've made most, if not all of my nuts n bolts invisible. For me it looks better, But I absolutely know what you mean about it looking homemade. There have been times when I thought the nuts n bolts added to the look so I do hope not everyone gets rid of them forever.2009-04-24 10:07:00

Oh yeah! i have some visible and some invisible! All for different effect! and yes, that homemade look does add a lovely charm! and that's one of the things that drew me to LBP in the first place! I do my enemies with invisible joints, so they can be more lifelike, but I hang my clouds from visible string, because it is so charming The choice to do either is one of the best little improvements they could have made 2009-04-24 10:23:00

Sometimes, I think it is nicer to have certain things hidden.

However if you're trying to make something that looks as though it was actually built, with bolts and winches etc. then you still have the option to have the stuff visible.

I would have been annoyed if they had made it so you can't have visible stuff.

Yeah, I've currently decided that with this level I'm keeping most of them visible, since I'm about 80% done with it, and designed most of the objects and enemies with that in mind. And most of them just kind of look funky without 'em.

But future levels I'll keep the invisibility in mind.

My next idea for a level is an air base, so I'll definitely be using it then.

I was just a little worried that poeple might be critical of not using it, but I shouldn't be.
