Savana Run

Archive: 9 posts

hey guys, im new to these board, and someone told me i should post my first and only level here. so here i am

my level is called Savana Run. its a somewhat (but not very) challenging platform type level. it all takes place in what was originally a jungle, but i changed it a bit. theyre are many different random things such as trees, cacti and tofu, instead. yes. tofu :O my first enemy is in this level too.

ive had a few people say the level gets repetitive (once in the comments, once or twice on gamefaqs) so it may get a bit boring :

id really appreciate people reveiwing my level, and im all up for playing yours too. i dont, however, like heart for heart stuff. i think its cheap haha.

my psn is: erob360z

P.S. my second level should be published sometime later, or tomorrow. its done, but now im just decorating it.

You've come to the right place then. Most of us here hate it with a passion.

I added your level on my list. I'm currently catching up on all the levels I missed so I will probably get around to yours as well.

Okay, i played the level, here are my thoughts, and a huge disclaimer:

THESE ARE JUST MY OPINIONS- THAT DOESNT MAKE THEM NECESSARILY THE BE ALL OR END ALL

well first off, its obviously a first level lol-not that thats a bad thing, everyones got to start somewhere (and i doubt ANYONES ever made a 5 star level on their first go ). A first level is a place to get the hang of things, and your skill will obviously grow with practice. However, as a first level... its not necessarily that fun to play D:
Some things i'd watch when making future ones:
1)checkpoints more evenly spaced- its fine to have more than one obstacle between checkpoints... but it cant get too thinned. Think about where your character is warped when they die- and when i say "die" i mean anywhere with any sort of hazard lol (if you build it- they will kill themselves on it) If you look at the distance/obstacles that they have to go back through and go "i'd really hate to do all that again" chances are you should probably put in a checkpoint somewhere in between.
2)Less MM content: when i say this, i dont mean things like "dont add stickers or decorations or music from MM" i mean try to use less of the premade items of theirs (ie: the stairs that go up, the teetery seesaw, etc). In my opinion, a level is immediately more impressive when i see that they've made their own stuff. The reasoning for this is simple: It takes about 5 seconds to put in something from MM; it takes a bit longer to make it yourself, and its the time difference which can make it far more impressive. Now its okay to use the items, but try not to overuse them, if you get my drift. I can see that you've already started making your own objects and traps etc, and thats great! I personally didnt make my own working brain monster until my third level lol (it confused the heck out of me till then). And some of the content you created was actually somewhat amusing. The rotating fire platforms were nice (though i bet you could ramp up the challenge by alternating the fire/safe sides) and the part where you had to swing onto the moving platform was kinda cool- but other than that your level is largely MM based. You can build your own obstacles! I can see that already- and i'd love to see more.
3)clean it up. This is just an aesthetic thing, for me. Dark matter isn't typically regarded as the prettiest of substances, which is why a lot of creators tend to hide it in some way shape or form. Occationally, other things are hidden, such as pistons, bolts, etc- but thats really more of a creators discretion (MM themselves didnt hide a single thing). A great way to get things spaced more evenly (such as when making stairs, or placing bolts on objects) is to use grid mode. Like i said, these are just kind of aesthetic things, but levels which are really clean tend to look better for obvious reasons.

my overall summary? Again, its a first level, so it needs a little work, but i can already see some of the shines your creation skill has. For one, you (at least seem to) love decorating, and have a nice sense of that (such as with all the little themed stairways). Decoration is something that will ALWAYS improve how your level is viewed, and the fact that you're starting now is great. (my first level= i think 5 stickers total, and the entire background was on fire XD) Also, i can see that you're already starting to get the hang of things, like i said, you've already made a monster, and some unique obstacles. The trick is to show the world how much you can shine! You also show a willingness to improve your levels (you posted here, and are willing to get feedback for starters, and you dont want to cop out by doing H4H) and as a result, i commend you. Tell me when your next level comes out- i'd love to see more of your creations!

again, this is only my opinion, and i'm deeply sorry if i stepped on any toes or fingers or egos.

lol, well if you want to, they're in my sig. It feels kinda rude to put it in my post (it sounds like a demand XD). And i'm not always too strict on recieving feedback from others (i'll always return it if they post in my threads... but don't necessarily care if i post in others)2009-04-24 21:53:00

Tried it out today and for a first level it's not bad.

Burnvictem42 has some excellent advice posted above and I agree with him. You'll get better at level creation if you stick with it. I can see some creative potential already in some of your level and it can only improve as you learn more. Check out my first level (It's awful) if you need some inspiration.

The only specific thing I wanted to mention that burnvitem42 didn't was a very specific part of the level. When you release the sponge swing and drop onto the steps with the candles on it - it's really tricky to pull off the landing. The game will put you in the same plane you release the sponge from unless you have an area higher in another plane than the one your release from. So when you let go it tries to have you land to the left of the candlestick on the tiny edge of the stairs on the back plane. I'd either make the front two planes taller - or remove the 1st candle on the left.

I hope you keep creating levels and check out some of the tutorial threads here and play a lot of good levels - those are the best ways I know to improve your skills and your levels will improve because of it. I gave it 2 stars for now but as a first level - I'd give it 3. Thanks for sharing it!

Hey gofurr360z, I played your level last night.

Really can't add anything Morgana & Burnvictim haven't already pointed out.
It is obviously your first level but you still have a lot of room to grow as a creator.

Follow the excellent advice my fellow-LittleBigPlaneteers gave you and we'll be back here in a few weeks discussing your next level.

ps: You should have seen my first tries in creator mode!!
