LittleBigCaveStory

Archive: 18 posts

This is a project based on a Japanese freeware game called Cave Story, or Doukutsu Monogatari in Japanese. I'm recreating the game in LittleBigPlanet, I knew I had to as soon as I saw Sackboy jump and fire downwards with the paint gun. If you want to play it before it's out, add XPHomeo to your PSN friend's list. At the moment, I am up to the egg...place. I'll keep this topic updated with information. Here are some pictures:

Awesome stuff man. I've always been really fond of Cave Story, and seeing someone making a tribute level of it makes me happy that there's a lot of other fans of it out there.2009-04-24 14:42:00

Good to see someone is actually looking forward to one of my levels. I don't want this to end up like my others that get 25 plays.

And more info on it, it's going to be published once I finish the entire thing and it will be locked with level keys and whatnot. And it probably won't have the bad ending and you will be forced to save "you-know-who." I don't really want to split it up into two paths as that would require me publishing two versions of half the levels. You will be able to end the saga early and get the normal end or continue one to the final boss, though. Just no multiple versions of a level.

And I just finished creating an air machine that kills you if you stay in water too long.

Somebody else on here is doing this, but it'll be nice to see the different interpretations!
Looks quite promising, from the screenshots. Mimiga village looks awesome. Nice pixel art for the characters, too.

Also, it just so happens I have a Chin Fish made from hama beads on my desk. I also have a CS save disk and the main character somewhere, too.

And I do sneak on your computer when you leave.

YouTube - LittleBigCaveStory Preview

I've uploaded a (laggy and low quality) video to Youtube showing what I have done so far and uploaded the three levels, locked, for backups and to get the level keys.

Looks great so far man! One thing I'd like to say though is that I think it would be nicer if the Mimigas were scale with Sackboy, it'd make the experience more true to the original game.2009-05-03 19:20:00

Anything that I sprite has to be, like, twice the size it should be, otherwise it starts to deform. I could make the Mimigas and whatnot sack-sized but you wouldn't be able to tell it was a Mimiga anymore.2009-05-03 19:26:00

You should give Balrog a few more hit points, to make it a bit harder.2009-05-03 19:56:00

ALSO, PLAYTESTERS...

I would like to try to observe sackpeople playing my level, by either turning the controller off, (will that work?) or following them and not trying to progress the level. Anyone want to play? PSN is XPHomeo.

Your levels look great! Can't wait for them to be released! If you need non-laggy high quality videos just ask me, and I'll be happy to make some! If you aren't sure check out my channel for some other levels I filmed here. (http://www.youtube.com/user/CogSpartan457)2009-05-08 02:52:00

Holy crap, I didn't know someone else was doing this. Have you played my version yet? There are links to threads for parts 1 and 2 in my sig. Please play them and leave feedback, I'd like to know what you think now that you know what i had to go through to make it

Mine is meticulously detailed and matched to precisely the scale of the original with as few modifications to the level layouts as possible. I can see you took some liberties in yours. </shameless plug>

I used a different technique for creating the characters that you might want to try:

1. Somewhere outside your level, create the character exactly as you do right now, with different materials, stickers, etc.
2. Scale that object up as large as you can while having it still fit on screen.
3. Go into front view and use the photo tool to take a picture of it. You may want to change the background color to match whatever the color of the character is first.
4. Combine all the separate materials of the object into one object. Put the sticker from that photo onto it and tweak its position and size until it lines up.
5. scale that object down to the size just before details start disappearing. characters like Mimigas will probably be a bit bigger than sackboy, but smaller than they are in your level.

EDIT:

I am aware that someone else is making this, but I'm just hoping I finish before they do.

Oh, so it's a race you want, is it? Well you'll probably win in that case because I like to spend a very long time on my levels. Plus I was taking a long break from Cave Story levels anyway.

Yeah, I played your Cave Story levels. Once I began work on this, I decided to search to see if anyone else did it. I found your First Cave level, and though it was a cool level and continued about my business making this. I didn't know you were creating the rest of the game, or at least other parts, as well.

I taught myself that technique of making sprites in LBP when it came time I needed to dissolve King and have him appear elsewhere. I managed to change each bit of him to dissolve then hook up wires to each bit but that was too hard to do each time and (before Yarg) made the game lag. I had to find a better way and came up with stickers. It looks a lot better and it's a lot easier to use, though it takes just a bit more work.
