Need to run firefox on PS3, please help

Archive: 13 posts

Is there ANY way to run firefox or internet explorer on the PS3, I know you can put linux operating systems on it - but from there can you have an internet browser that works on that OS?

And I have the best reason to want to do this... EVER. Basically I want to watch netflix on my HUGE HD tv... and I don't want to get a 360 to do it.

Yes, but you aren't going to like the answer.

1. Back up our PS3.
2. Reformat the drive into two partitions.
3. Restore the PS3 to one partition.
4. Put Yellow Dog Linux on the other partition.

Basically what this does is create a dual booting system (Google for the details). And from what I understand, you can put Firefox on Yellow Dog Linux.

RIGHT NOW no one has ported Firefox to the PS3's native operating system. So you are stuck.

Thanks anyway, I was going to upgrade my hard drive next pay check, so I'll be doing this when I get the new drive. Thanks again - can't wait to watch some movies over the PS3 on Netflix just to spite microsoft. Those jerks made their OWN software to run the streaming movies, just so you couldn't use the PS3's browser.2009-04-25 14:16:00

I'm contemplating whether to put YDL on my PS3 or not.
I don't want to mess up my LBP save and lose my trophies or anything.

I think trophies are stored online, and not on your HDD.
Am I wrong in this?

There are a couple of reasons why this is a bad plan, but mainly Netflix streaming doesn't work on linux!! (people are trying to find a work around but I don't think a good one exists right now)

The only plan I can really recommend is hooking a computer up directly to your TV, or using a MediaServer that can stream Netflix to your PS3. I think the only one that can is PlayOn (http://www.themediamall.com/playon), which has a free 30 day trial.

YEs, they're stored in a server, the same place your account info is at.

Not as far as i know, i only know you can't earn them anymore if you do, but not loose them.2009-04-27 23:29:00

There are a few options...

1. Get a DVR that's compatible with Netflix.
2. Connect TV to computer.
3. Get an Xbox and walk away from your fanboyish ways.

You can always compile firefox, right?

not fanboyish... my roommate has the 360 in his room, so we have to watch netflix on his slightly smaller tv and only when he's awake or home - it's lame2009-04-30 01:36:00

Sure. But to do so for the Sony operating system will require an investment into their development tools, from what I understand (I believe they dropped the price to around 1200 USD... but I might be wrong - don't quote me).

Worse, if Sony's OS is NOT Linux compatible (and there is nothing I've seen indicating it is), then you will have to port it. A non-trivial task even in the best of circumstances.
