What do you like?

Archive: 37 posts

Ok everyone I have a simple question...

What do you like Most?

*You can choose as many as you like*

1. Design (visual appeal)

2. Heavy on the Platforming

3. Action shoot em up's

4. Puzzles out the wazoo

5. Story driven levels

6. Something I havent listed

7. All of the above

I was noticing that I tend to design puzzle levels...well I guess it would be better classified as 'task driven' although I really do like them to have a puzzle feel.

Now that may be what flows out of me naturally but if it's not what people want to play then I will try to redirect my creativity to the most popular themes.

Don't get me wrong I am not giving up what I love to do but I want to broaden the appeal for my levels.

So please post a response listing what you like for all of LBPC.

I like a mix of story and puzzles most, as 'some' (not all) of the platforming gets a bit intense.

Next?

Thanks

6. Visually stunning levels.

Though if I had to choose from your options, I would choose platforming.

I love platforming and a good story! They are also the hardest two elements to master and make an enjoyable level. Of course, for some reason, Action Shooters seem to be getting the most plays and hearts, though as a creator I really appreciate good solid platforming. And as a writer, I really appreciate good storytelling You can quickly see when someone has put a lot of effort into those two areas and it makes their levels timeless.

Oh, and I extremely hate H4H levels!!

What I love is gameplay and polish. I hate to get stuck in something, uncareful designs and mechanics that possibly won't work. It's simple, I want level where I will never ever use the "give up" option REGARDLESS of how bastardly i'm playing.

In short, a level with great platforming, polished and if it looks great on top of it, bring it on!

Platforming.
You should make this into a poll.

Good idea...I will try to figure that out now

Most great levels I have played have a brilliant story. Simple to put in but difficult to master. Hence I think story levels are the best, although I see the angle Killian is coming from. Visuals can really make a level aswell2009-04-23 16:31:00

Visuals/Design makes or breaks a level for me. I prefer story driven levels with some platforming.

I'm trying to appreciate some of the other style levels like puzzle, shooters, and technical type levels on their own merits but I definitely have a preference for pretty challenging platformers with a plot of sorts.

I like a bit of puzzle and a bit of platforming really, I voted for design though, thats the most important thing. Its the first thing your eyes set on when you start the level, and pretty much in most cases sum up the level in one go I think.2009-04-23 17:10:00

It seems already I know what I am going to work on next...Platforming!

I think I have a good story going and I think the design is my best to date.

Thanks for the answers so far and keep them coming!

Another thing to keep in mind is the challenge level. I enjoy levels that are challenging, though it's a very hard balance to master. We don't want our levels too hard that people can't finish it, but we also don't want it too easy which makes it too boring and quick

PS: Great thread by the way! It's really going to help a lot of creators!

Well I like to see 5 but I personally make my own concept levels.

In each level I try an interesting concept and put it forth in a basic level I make in a day; when I get back on my PS3 I have a shooter planned but we'll see how it goes

Puzzles for me, I like them.
I don't have a different thing I love as much as puzzling on LBP.

Yeah, Platforming makes LBP. And so much fun can be had on a good platformer. Look at games such as Sonic, Mario or Crash Bandicoot, they are brilliant, and no use of gimmicks, just pure platforming fun with great level design I would one day like to make a level which is as replayable and unforgettable as those games.
AJknox, if you get a chance, dig up and play some of those classics again, it could give you some cool ideas

I like them all as long as they look good and work good.
But over all i prefer the challenge levels (difficult levels) which you seemed to have forgotten to add

I would say All of the Above but if I had to choose I'd say my favorite types of levels are good-looking, difficult puzzle levels.

If anyone has a level that meets this, feel free to PM me with the details of the level (Level Name & PSN) and I will check it out .

For me it`s all about platforming with design a fairly close second. The rest, I'm not fussed about.

I like levels where people use the environment to create the level. Eg there was a level where to get across the river you had to jump on an elephant`s back, pull his ears, then run and junp off the trunk when his head came back. I prefer that kind of thing to the platform floating in mid air.

The results so far are interesting, as it looks like people are more concerned with visual appeal than gameplay? Or does the poll indicate that most people like visual appeal but preferred gameplay styles vary?

I picked design, platforming and puzzles.

Platforming. I love that aspect of the game.

But the paintinator being in certain parts, and being limited, would be great in a platforming level made. Design is also important, and polish. As long as I can get to the end of the level without extreme effort and don't fall "off" the level, then its fine with me.

But only if it has platforming! I hate roller coaster levels after the first play of them, they have barely any fun in them. -.-

I picked design, platforming and puzzles.

What I am getting from this poll is :

1st: It has to look good!

2nd: Depends on what type of level you personally like to play. All of us (I think) have different ideas of what makes a cool level.

3rd: Platforming! That is the basis on which this game was created.

So far thats what I have gleaned from this poll...but I'm sure you could interpret the data to fit what ever scenario you'd like *Theoretically*

I like them all, therefore choosing 'All of the Above'.

Basically, I think having all of these is what makesa good level; with the exception of story in some cases.

Design, Platforming, Puzzles.

Design because it has to work and look polished

Platforming because it's a platformer

Puzzles especially, because they reinvent the game. Even a simple puzzle like wex's cube in Inside H4H shows great intuitiveness. I think that's really gets me excited - intuitive complexity. LBCalculator ws great because it was complex, and worked. I just love complex methods of making new things!

I didn't go off topic

Anywho, I've decided visuals don't make a good level. I, personally, don't like "movie" levels - which are just levels with pretty drawings as you go through that follow the events of a film. I'd go for a level with great new gameplay but made of wood and sponge over those any day.

What really annoys me is when these movie levels get loads of attention. Playr, the only real games-show in the UK, had a whole section dedicated to "You" (user-generated content). One week, it was LBP. Only thing they had was film levels. :Grr:2009-04-29 22:52:00

Umm. My movie level was on Playr, although i didn't manage to see it myself.

I'll go to the back of the class now.

Anyway, my preferences completely vary. Good aesthetics can make a huge difference, but don't make or break a level for me if the play is great. Generally, I like to be surprised when i play a level, be it a stunning piece of art design or a mischeviously good bit of platforming.
