Pre-Determined Path?
Archive: 15 posts
Quick question to ponder. In Donnie Darko, they show everyone has a pre-determined path. You think there is such a thing? I know it sounds crazy, but it got my thinking if it could be possible. Do people have a path laid out for them in one way or another that they can chose to follow or go away from or must follow? P.S. If this should be in movies/television please move. Thanks! | 2009-04-23 02:25:00 Author: Frank-the-Bunny Posts: 1246 |
Well, Donnie Darko is an odd movie, because at the very end they contradict this "pre-determined" path theory because Donnie chooses to die. It could be possible, but it doesn't really matter. We still THINK that we make a choice. There's a theory that there are billions of alternate universes, each with different outcomes. So in one universe we are the kings of the universe, riding gallant steeds to destroy the evil Galactinite who, with his DestructOrb, keeps threatening to destroy the Earth! Silly Galactinite! | 2009-04-23 02:36:00 Author: qrtda235566 Posts: 3664 |
After watching Donnie Darko this same question drove me crazy for a while! Now you've reminded me of it again! Aaaaaaah! But I really don't know, perhaps we do have a set determined path, asking this very question could be part of it  And mentioning that asking the question could be part of it could be part of it  And mentioning that I mentioned that mentioning the question could be part of it could be part of it! Oh no...not again.... | 2009-04-23 14:55:00 Author: noddle111 Posts: 174 |
I'm not sure if we have predetermined path but with some deep knowledge of the cosmos and magnetic field (and by "deep" I really mean "deep") we could actually "predict" our path. It's the simple logic that each mass influences others around. The butterfly effect if you will. If we'd truly understand what every influence of the different mass around us we could predict alot of stuff in our lives. Let's take an extremely basic example. We understood that the presence of the moon at a certain point will litterally cause the ocean to lift up a little. We know when this happens because we understand the movement cyles of the moon and our planet. Now with our present level of knowledge we can only link simple things like that but tell yourself this: If the moon influences the level of water, it also influences your body -- it's just that we don't know it true consequences for sure. Now ALL other masses around our planet influences life somehow. We might never be able to decipher what this all means but who knows. If you really think about it, this recalls astrology. I always believe that astrology as we know it is just some remains of an ancient and way greater knowledge than our little science. Giving us time to grow our science of the cosmos, we would probably come at a point of "explained astrology" since we would understand what all the masses around are having as effects in our lives. . | 2009-04-23 16:07:00 Author: RangerZero Posts: 3901 |
Einstein proposed that time is 'already there' like you're just going along the path however scientists are now theorising that time is formed in 'grains' which can stack up differently and so you can shape your own future. | 2009-04-23 18:02:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |

The fact that people debate or wonder about free will proves its existence. | 2009-04-26 19:59:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
The fact that people debate or wonder about free will proves its existence. Explain pl0x. | 2009-04-26 21:11:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |
Explain pl0x. The fact that we can question implies a degree of free will and control over our fate. | 2009-04-26 22:35:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
But maybe it is our fate to question our fate? The point is, you should not let it bother you. If everything is predetermined, enjoy the ride and the surprises. If not, enjoy the ride, and the surprises! If it is all predetermined, it doesn't matter anyway, as it will have absolutely no effect on our decisions. We will still feel as if we do what we want. Dawesbr pretty much said what I was thinking, discussing free will does not make it exist. I'm thinking our paths are set in theorey as I am basically just a series of logics and I will go through a set path which something could calculate. | 2009-04-26 23:09:00 Author: Shermzor Posts: 1330 |
The problem is fate is totally illogical... it's not like a computer program where the progression is always identical, there are too many random variables thrown in front of us in life. Questioning and garnering your own opinion of your surroundings is the foundation of free will. But I digress, I just firmly believe that we are not bound by stars nor genes, not birth family nor country, that we are only bound by our willingness and determination. | 2009-04-26 23:35:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
The problem is fate is totally illogical... it's not like a computer program where the progression is always identical, there are too many random variables thrown in front of us in life. But are they really random? Or just predetermined? This thread reminds me of Bruce Almighty: YouTube - "FREE WILL" in Bruce ALMIGHTY | 2009-04-26 23:52:00 Author: SawronZXZ Posts: 463 |
But are they really random? Or just predetermined? This thread reminds me of Bruce Almighty: YouTube - "FREE WILL" in Bruce ALMIGHTY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6et2ZSodS0g) There is a certain degree of "noise" to most things in science, so it would make sense that it would apply to social interactions as well. Also let me elaborate further on my first post here: If you can debate over whether you choose to believe in free will or not... well by golly, you just exercised free will, because you chose something. I might have to add though, I am completely non-theistic and don't believe in any religious entities or constructs controlling us. You know what escapes me, though? You know what makes me want to throw my entire belief in free will out the window? Love. We cannot choose to fall in love or not (our choice lies in being in a relationship or not) .. we just... fall in love. with people, with music, with games.... So my final answer will be, our lives are a combination of our own will, choices, decisions, and actions... and our environment and experiences. So to some extent, both. | 2009-04-27 00:04:00 Author: Foofles Posts: 2278 |
