Level Showcase gets an upgrade!

Archive: 35 posts

A complaint I've heard, one of the biggest, is that the Level Showcase drowns out levels. It's true, it does - great levels stay at the top, and it's infamously difficult to get any attention when your level is getting shoved under all the ones that have already gotten their fair share of the praise. In response, I've set up an automated system that runs every 10 minutes - it scans every thread in the Showcase, and if it has 20 replies or more, it is automatically moved to a new Popular Levels subforum (no, you can't post new threads there, but you can interact in every other way). I've been working to get this running for a while now, and after a few hiccups, code rewrites, and template edits, I think it's set up in a much more approachable way. This should really open up our Showcase to those of you who are tired of having your level ignored. Leave your thoughts - I'm curious what you guys think about the change.

EDIT: It appears that in the initial move, F4F settings were lost in the threads moved to Popular Levels. This won't happen again for any new levels that are moved, but I cannot restore the F4F status of the levels that are already there. However, if you are one of the Creators with a level in Popular Levels, you can hit Edit > Go Advanced and enable the F4F prefix again, if you're still looking for feedback. I'm sorry for the mishap; like I said, I have taken steps to ensure it won't happen again for any levels moved in the future.

Still, hm... Cool Maybe someday I could get something there... but now I have to work on my "secret" project ) ok, it ain't secret anymore, lol

Still, cool. Just hope it doesn't make it more confusing for some.

Nice work CC, I know you have been looking for something to do this for awhile and it will be a great addition to the site for the creators.

This is going to help me quite a bit - I have spent quite a bit of time scrolling through pages and pages to make sure levels weren't being lost. And sometimes you can't even tell without jumping in and reading the thread, because someone posted a "will look at this later" message so you think a level has had attention when it hasn't.2009-04-23 06:17:00

Although I think the amount of replies might have to be tweaked (but tbh, you don't know till you try) it seems like a simple solution to a big problem.

Personally though, I think 2 pages should be the limit to be moved, although ideally, you would want a certain amount of "feedback posts" instead of simple posts, although you would need to do that manually.

That was thought about, but I scanned the Showcase and found that most of the threads hogging the first page had over 20 posts. There will be odd cases, but overall, this should fix the issue.

Excellent idea. I actually wish MM would do the same thing in LBP. Move the levels which already have 100's of 1000's of plays into a seperate "Popular levels" section.

It's pretty depressing when you see great levels that have only a few dozen plays then you look at something like ramp with 10 billion plays.

Well, levels do move everyday now in the cool pages...

Just when you think LBPCentral can't get any better, something like this happens. Too cool for words, this will highlight new levels and cool levels independently from one another. Keep up the incredible work! 2009-04-23 16:49:00

I don't mean to be insensitive, but I don't think this update is the cause. We've had levels get even more plays since this change, and everyone seems even more eager to share, so I don't know what to say.

Hmm, unfortuanatly there's still not much that can be done anymore. CC has done a great job with the problem given, and i don't see any better solution at the moment.
But to ease the pain tjb, i'm going to play your level and give you feedback now
