Creature/object trouble.

Archive: 12 posts

Okay, so I've been working on my second level for about two months now, and I have run accross a problem.

I have two enemies (boogie bats) that are attached to a specific object (fruit stand), and they have protected brains, and you kill them with the paintinater.

Problem is that when you shoot either one the alotted times, it's brain disapears, but it's still going, and when you kill the other one, the entire fruit stand disapears.

I wish I had a better quality photo.

So my question is, is it possible to have a creature attached to an object, but make the game not think the object is a part of that creature?

I'm aiming for community spot light with this level, so any help torwards a solution to this problem would be great!

Are the bats directly attached to the fruitstand?

Also, brains are sort of weird, it sometimes matters how/when you place the brain, a lot of it depends on order. Well, that's what I've found out anyways.

Anyways, are they like glued to the fruitstand?

No, they are attached to it via rubber band.2009-04-21 03:10:00

No, they are attached to it via rubber band.

That's still attached, and the engine will consider it part of the fruitstand... so it considers both brains part of the "creature".

Try putting their rubber band onto a thin peice of dark matter behind the fruitstand.

Alright, that's a good idea, I'll give that a shot. I also just recently thought to maybe hide a bomb inside of it instead. I don't know, but I'll respond with results.2009-04-21 03:19:00

You could of course remove the brains, and make the bats into dissolvable material, and attach the paint switch to them, that way only the bats dissapear.2009-04-21 03:20:00

Yes, silverleon, that's a good suggestion.

I sometimes put the paint switch on objects and have them attached to vulnerable brains floating on dark matter off screen. This way, when you shoot the objects and they disappear, you also get points when the brain is destroyed.

The best way to do it is to make the bat by itself. Capture it as an object and then add the brain. Capture it as an object again and delete the first object. Now you can safely put this new object in any level you want. You can attach it to the fruit stand by rubber bands without it thinking the bats and fruit stand are one creature.2009-04-21 12:14:00

That is really helpful, DCF!

I think the method of attaching the elastic to dissolve (ie a tiny block of dissolve on the bat), then the paintinator switch activates both the dissolve and the brain should work, due to the delay between brain being collected and the dissolving of the creature.

That's the method I used to use before I realized the cause was what order the brain was attached in. This method of attaching the brain after you finish the creature is the most reliable in my opinion. It also opens up the possibility of using materials other than dissolve. Dissolve takes stickers really well, but sometimes you might want lights, a non-grabbable or a non-explodeable material.

Really the only thing that matters is the order you add the brain. However, capturing the object ensures that the game recognizes it as a single piece, which IMO makes the process less error prone down the line.

I just changed the enemies to dissolve material. It worked pretty well that way. I might try what DCF suggested before I publish it, but many poeple don't really care about points, so I'm not sure if it's worth the effort.2009-04-24 21:28:00

Oh god... i remember when i was trying to figure this out with that paintanator switch, i remember i did something like....
1: Put Brain On Creature
2: Make sure the Brain is the Protected one and Is set to Vulnerable
3: Attach Switch To Brain, and switch should be set to "One Time"
4: then i think that might have been it, (got this from countless days of trying to make a failed MGS level)
but im not quite sure if this will work
