Problems regarding Online Costs and Policing of Content

Archive: 10 posts

I was busy reading the magazine that was scanned in for us to read when i came across a dilemma. In the magazine it talks about wether Playstation will charge for uploading and downloading other peoples levels and the general use of the LittleBigPlanet online world. I think that if Playstation is not careful they could ruine something which is destined to be awesome.

If they start making us pay to download items and for general online use it could be disatrous to the success of the game. I could understand if they charge for items they have designed themselves but if a user designes a level and/or items they should be able to provide it to everyone else at there own choice.

There comes another problem with controling the content that undoubtedly people will try to put up. there are going to be people who think its funny to make porno type levels which although intrigueing is quite innappropriate. I am worried about how these issues will be addressed, if the online world is controlled to much it could ruine the game.

I just wanted to start a discussion regarding these issues because i am interested if anyone knows anything about these issues that i don't and generally what people think about them.

If a thread has already been started about this i am sorry and please direct me to it.[/SIZE]

About the online costs, I don't think they would charge for general online. For items maybe, but it would be terrible to charge for general online.2007-07-17 08:21:00

lol relax, they asked around in PSU what they loved about PS3, and the majority was free online. Besides MM knows fully well that whatever they try to sell, could be created by someone else, so its kinda pointless.

Other games however (like home) could charge contest, but being able to create anything anyone creates, pointless to sell stuff for that game

also, a sort of in-depth discussion here : https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=93

Yeah. I think that things should stay free on the user created content side of things. But I could easily see MM or Sony releasing theme packs of objects for levels, and charging for them. This I could understand as long as there is enough for us to work with by just buying the game.

As for theme packs, I could totally see MM releasing a Halloween pack, Christmas, and so on.

As for moderating content, that is going to become a bigger cost of gaming for Sony if they intend to have a load of user created content. Same thing with Home, although it seems as though LBP gives you the potential to shape almost anything out and use any kind of picture. If the game sells enough though, I'm sure they can afford to hire mods. Or if the game is really big enough and successful enough, they might easily get volunteers to watch over things.

I agree with your theme packs thing. I think they will do something like that obviously. I guess that will keep the money coming in for them to keep monitoring the whole content issue.

But if thats not enough then they will probably at some stage start charging for general use. But then again by the time they need to start charging they probably would have the next one out by then. This would bring in a huge amount of money for them again.

Also what Reshin said. Anything they create we can create as well. Which i think is a really good point. Obviously this is limited to items and levels though. But any other stuff would be an update for the game so it should be free.

About policing content, they could have certain people look over anything that is flagged too see if it should be deleted2007-07-18 00:54:00

maybe if there are repeated offenses then they won't let the user add more levels for a while?2007-07-18 05:03:00

OMG i didn't even think of that. People who put porn up could risk having there entire systems banned from Network like on Xbox Live.2007-07-18 05:15:00
