How to Maximize Level Feedback

Archive: 56 posts

The Level Showcase is, by and large, a promotion game. The aim of the game is simple: to convince as many people as possible that they should try your level. There's many ways to do this (some trickier than others), so I'll list the latest and greatest below. Feel free to submit your own as well - just reply to this thread with your idea.

Quick and Easy

Include your PSN! We have tons (read: tons) of new users who don't think to supply their PSN - even if it's the same as your username, we have no way of knowing unless you tell us! Make it easy for us to find your level! This point is unnecessary now that a PSN is required in order to post a new level, but removing it wouldn't make sense since it helps reinforce why a PSN is important. Instead, it will remain in this list, but struck out.
Sell your level! You should always provide a description for your level, but you should also let players know why they should play it - you'd be surprised how many threads lack something so simple and effective.
Add screenshots! Screenshots give people an idea of what your level's like, and screenshots could easily convince people to try out your level. Need to be convinced? Here's a quick comparison - glance at each of these descriptions quickly, and then decide which one you'd rather try first.
If you like llamas, or Shadow of the Colossus, you'll hopefully have a blast with this.

A visit to a mysterious llama shrine goes wrong, resulting in chaos and a stampede. Ends with a huge SotC-style boss battle.

http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/1305/aphoto7.jpg
http://img136.imageshack.us/img136/2976/aphoto.jpg

I really wanted this to be worth playing, so I spent a few months on it.
It's my first publised level though so go easy Enjoy!
Probably Level B, right? Well, you'd be surprised - both are from the same exact level listing (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=t=10524). I used the description for the first one, and used just the screenshots for the second one. As you can see, screenshots are very persuasive!

For the Long Haul

Keep updating! If you've gotten feedback on your level, improve it based on that feedback. If you let everyone know that you're willing to fix your level as they point out issues, they'll be more willing to play and leave more feedback because they know you'll respond positively.
Add a video! This isn't necessary, but if you can add one at some point (especially one that's edited like a teaser trailer instead of a walkthrough), it may earn you even more plays.
If you make it into the Spotlight, flaunt it! Many Spotlighted levels will have something to the tune of "Spotlighted!" in their level title, and that draws even more plays. If you're one of the lucky few, be sure to continue to follow tip #1 - that will bring in even more responses, maximizing the length of time your level is on the first page of the Showcase, and eventually promoting you to Cool Levels.

Thanks for this, it should stop some of the one-sentence description posts I've been seeing 'round 'ere.

Plus, by including Shadow of the Llama in this post, you've upped its famousness too

Could you add another info in this thread? How the heck do I get quality screenshots from my level from the PS3 to my PC?

Oh and you forgot some pro-tips:

- Advertisement in your signature (with Banner or just a link)
- Using the generous offers of various reviewers to review your level on a request basis.
- Take advantage of F4F by reviewing other peoples level and get a review in respond to that

Yeah, the above points are also very useful that I've found.

A near perfect way to get a lot of plays and hearts on your level is to set-up a contest around it - but I wouldn't recommend many people to do that

Anyway, thanks

You should maybe add to in that you should play other peoples F4F levels CC and leave a link to your level, either in the post or your sig, that will always increase plays.2009-04-20 10:16:00

How are people doing the High res pics?
They have something called a "capture card" that will film video and take screenshots from their display.

To be perfectly honest, quality is a big factor - if you're getting "ok" ratings from our members, you probably won't get as many replies. There's a bunch of members who try to help those who are still learning, but most people are just interested in playing the best ones. Still, 15 replies is a good number for your level - I suggest taking all of the feedback you've received and improving on what you've made until you feel it's perfect, then update everyone with a changelist.

There's not much else we can do - we make it easy to understand what F4F is and how to use it, so it's really up to each Creator to make use of it.

screenshots for ps3 to lbp central:
1: Take a picture in LBP
2: Go to "more info" when the picture is highlighted
3: press "export to hdd"
4: goto a image or file hosting site (google image hosting to find results) and upload the picture then write down or copy the url it gives you, do not use any code.
5. Click the image button when posting. Allow the page to open.
6. Paste url in the input box.

You should now have a screenshot!http://i26.tinypic.com/wuo6y0.jpg

edit: this is probobly how people get high quality screenshots as you can see with my dog

Both level A and level B look interesting. I have gotten one of my levels on the cool levels page and it happened because eveything was in just the right conditions: 1). The cycle of the weeks cool levels had just ended and was about to be refreshed when I published it, 2). It was an unbeatable level, causing people to play it, die, and then replay it. 3). Many of my friends where playing littlebigplanet when I published it so it had instantly gotten on the busiest page in no time. (I believe it had gotten over 140 plays in the course of five minutes). Once it got enough plays it made it's way onto cool levels where it reamained there for six days. In the first three it got 60,000 plays. This was toward the begining of august.

Today is January 31st, 2010, nearly six months after the level was published. To date it is a four star level with 240,307 plays, 2,028 hearts and I have over 200 author hearts.
There is even a Youtube video of it created by patroit1977k. You never know what luck can do for you but I happens to all of us in different ways.

If you want people to play your levels, you should post them in the Level Showcase. I see that you have not posted any levels there yet (if you had, they would be accessible by clicking on the "My Creations" link underneath your username). I can guarantee that almost no one will look for your levels by looking at your PSN if you simply post a comment in a thread like this.

Well, your level thread has only been up for a day, so bear in mind it will take people a little while to see it and although you've proactively been doing some f4f on other people's threads, that was only a few hours ago, so it will take those people a while to get back to you.

The best thing to do on the F4F front is to try and give constructive critisism, as well as saying what you liked about a level, find things that you think can be improved as many creators post here to develop their skills. Also have a look through the cool levels pages for F4F threads too, most of the creators who end up in that forum tend to be pretty active and / or skilled creators with a good eye, so it's great to get some feedback from them.

Good luck

ghik I would say you actually have a LOT of reactions baring in mind this is your first couple of levels. You've got what you need (which is useful feedback) which will allow to you improve your next level...which will hopefully get even more reactions because you've already made links with other creators. You're doing fine 2010-03-02 12:50:00

Great tips! I'll be sure to follow them when my level is ready.

Just out of interest, seeing as i'm having the PS3 moved to my bedroom once it's redone, if I hook it up to the same TV as a DVD recorder, could I make it record gameplay from the PS3?

I don't have screenshots for this level but i'll try my best to do a description. (Note: i am barely on this site so if there are any problems with my level, post it in the comments. It will be going through a massive overhaul because of how short it is. Have fun!) In a far away land mystery aliens platforming action and giant nickels, [INSERT SACKBOY'S NAME HERE] is sent on an epic adventure to save his small town from a giant rampaging nickel named Paul. Domo joins the crew along with any friends you're bringing along. Even i make a cute little cameo. Difficulty Easy-Medium. Nickel Quest in stores now!!2010-08-17 20:21:00

This is so frustrating. Unless you are known or can F4F, no one posts anything. C'mon, I can take it. Rip my levels apart. Tell me how terrible they are and how you hated playing it. Nitpick every crappy decision I made. Just give me feedback so I can get better.

My levels are not going to rock anyone's world, but I think they are fun enough.

Hi There!

I'm new here and I read the tips on the first page. Thank you for the tip with the screenshots, but unfortunately you don't say how to make screenshots.

I know how to make photos in the game but how can I apply more than 1 picture to my level symbol?

Incinerator22 has a nice tutorial to help you get pics. There is info that should help the last two posts.

https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=30449-How-to-Upload-LBP-Photos-to-the-Internet&p=528295#post528295

@jenne1980
Not sure what you mean by more than one pic to your level symbol. Do you mean on your Level Showcase? There is one main pic used in the format, but you can include as many as you want in the rest of the opening post.

Check this out, this is my last level thread (https://lbpcentral.lbp-hub.com/index.php?t=32694-Survival-Line-A-co-op-survival-challenge).... this might give you some ideas. There are many ways to do it, but this is pretty typical of how I do it. Opening pic. Title that matches the level name with a nice descriptive summary.. then in the body of the post I go into more detail and finally the rest of my pics.

Hope this helps!

Thank's for your answer.

What I mean is the level symbol in the game. When you search for community levels, some levels have a kind of "preview". That means you see a slideshow of a couple of screenshots when you select the level symbol. I would like to make such a "slideshow-preview" but I can only select one picture as the level symbol.

Exporting pictures and post it in internet forums is no problem.

Sorry for my bad english, I'm not a native speaker

The pictures that scroll by are ones taken with the in game camera tool and then uploaded(press square to tweak the photo and you will see the option to upload). Photos taken by the creator will always appear first in the slide show.

No need to select as whatever pics you upload becomes part of the slideshow. There is no way to control that unless you add more and move others off.

..and as an fyi, this has nothing to do with level feedback and the reason for my misunderstanding of your question. It should be in a thread of its own unless you are done. No worries though since you are new, but that is why staying on topic really helps everyone.

it means "feedback for feedback". in other words: i play your level and tell you what i like/hate about it or some problems you need to fix. then you do the same for one of my levels!
