Teleport to ????? (SPOTLIGHTED!!!!)

Archive: 28 posts

This level uses a teleportation system to shuffle you around the level. Here's how it works. The first area is a basic staging area where the place you die determines where you go next. For example if you die on the first set of jumps,
the level will kick you out right then and there. If you die on the second set of jumps it takes you to the next part of the level etc... The level is divided into
13 areas, and it gets quite hard. If you die in an area it will kick you to a "kickdown" level. There's no story or theme, just platforming. So take a look, and let me know what you think.

If anyone want's feedback just let me know what level. thanks

If I understand you correctly, it sounds like an intriguing level where how well you play determines how the level is constructed, which sounds really cool! I'll give this ago when I get on (*fingers crossed CY doesn't slow me down again with its 20 minute load times*)2009-04-19 16:49:00

Well it`s certainly a great idea.

The first bit was tough as nails and I died on the very last part before I would have been given the points. Certainly not impossible. I liked that it started off with a pretty tough challenge to set you off on your path.

I found the part next rather frustrating. It has the steps with the blocks pushing them out. That took long enough but then when I passed the pillars I end up dying on the slope without a real chance to see what`s ahead back to the start for me. Which brings me to my main point:

The very nature of this level means that you can`t have checkpoints after every obstacle. However this means that players who die will be repeating themselves quite a bit and I can`t help but feel that the obstacles should be shorter. When I got sent to the multi coloured bit, I had to negotiate 5 or six of those grab balls on a wynch. Had I died there, I would be back to the start. And worse than that, it dragged on even with one play through.

Same with the next part. The rainbow wave things looks incredible, but takes so long that when I got squashed a couple of times down below that, that I was ready to quit rather than go through it a third time.

I think while your level is a good one, that it would have worked better if it was a collection of smaller challenges rather than fairly large ones. That way you won`t have players getting fed up going over the same obstacles over and over. Especially since some of your obstacles (The wynchs and Stairway) are designed to slow the player down rather than be difficult to pass.

And as a technical thing, just after the rainbow waves, there`s a drop onto the button surrrounded by spikes. You can jump over that whole thing at the top and get out of the level.

Now despite my criticism, I did really like your level. It got 5 stars and a heart from me. It`s a great idea, and there is some great level design, but I feel the two haven`t gelled quite as well as they could have.

Anyway I hope you don`t find my criticism too harsh. I realise it may sound like I didn`t get on with your level, but I did!

I don't take it harshly at all. That's why it's on f4f. I want to see what people think so I can make improvements. I think the concept is good, but I need feedback to make it better.
The idea of the level is that it can be a real pain if your a good player, but if your not so good you can still finish. The part you made it to is the hard area, so if you didn't make it to the end of the first area where you get the points it looks like I have a little tweaking to do on that part. you should have went to the medium difficulty. Maybe I'll rethink the race part. thanks for the feedback.

ok. Made some changes to the race. Should be much more streamlined now. Also made some changes to the part with the steps. Might also change the rainbow wench part.2009-04-23 02:18:00

Okay, i'm just going to get this out of the way

First: thanks for the F4F ;p
Second: this is a Really, Really, REALLY cool level.

I think that the way you engineered this is for one thing VERY impressive (teleportation can be a right pain in the lower dorsal extremity if you get my drift- and you've even improved upon THAT you sneaky devil) and i love how it actually changes around based on your skill level!

So far i havent been able to play them all (shame, that) but what i can play is really fun. The part i keep dying on is teh one with the wheel you roll, and the giant shuriken. For some reason when i jump (at the shuriken part) the gas kills me. Also, 2 lives is kinda a small amount to do that challenge if you ask me

The level is filled with unique challenges, and i think its kind of funny how the lower skillpaths sometimes echo the ones above them (ie: one you have crushing electric blocks, then one with crushing stone blocks, and one with crushing sponge blocks) 5 stars and a heart, now if i could only play all 13!

Hi Smasher

Thanks for your kind words about Hyper Cube Frenzy! Here's what I thought about Teleport to ?????....

I'm a massive fan of levels that do something slightly different, and do it well. This is one of those levels. I like the look of it, I like the feel of it, and I didn't get frustrated even though it was quite a challenge.

PROS:
Challenging
'WOW' factor
Replay value
Decent visuals
No rocket-powered cheetahs!

CONS:
Maybe a tad too difficult for the young players
Concept won't be liked by everyone, but this is an observation, not a criticism.

Overall:
4* and tagged with 'Ingenious'. I will definitely come back to this level and heart it when I finish it! Well done!

Thanks for the feedback. The part your dieing on could probably use improvement. Them sound like cheep deaths to me. Ill check it out tonight, and fix. You do get 3 lives on that part. I dont know why it gave you 2. Ill look into that also. I greatly appreciate the feedback.

What a great idea for a level. I started a teleportation level a couple of months ago but never got back to working on it because I didn't want it to be a gimmick. You sir, have put teleportation to good use. This is a really cool concept, that makes me want to keep playing it over and over. The platforming is challenging, maybe a bit too challenging in parts..but that remains to be seen as I know I haven't seen it all. I can't get past the part where you walk on the tube...I suck hard at that but will keep trying. Having not seen everything, I don't have a ton of feedback, so I'm actually just going to post a recommendation thread for one of your levels.2009-04-27 22:07:00

Neat idea - and interesting level! I guess I'm not as good a platformer player as I thought though - kept getting send down to the "easier" levels. lol

The sections I saw looked pretty good. Pretty simple style to the graphics in places but the level isn't really about the eye candy so it wasn't a big deal to me. I did really like your multicolored striped sponge wave section a lot though. Really dynamic and pretty.

The concept of moving the player to different sections is brilliant! I think a creator could do a really interesting sort of "choose your own adventure" style level with this sort of set up.

I gave it 4 stars and really enjoyed playing it. Thanks for sharing it!

Thanks, I was going for something different with this. Just about every teleportation level I've seen is just like, look at me, look at me, I can teleport.
I was trying to do something useful with it. Unfortunately My original vision wasn't realized, because the teleportation system alone takes up 5/8 of the whole thermo. The rest was just getting the challenges built. By the time I got done I had hardly any room left for decoration. Anyway it is what it is. Thanks for the compliment.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I didn't have much room for looks, but I think it's still ok. Like you said I've had a couple of ideas that can use this system. I think it has a lot of possibilities. Also since create pack 1 came out I can use the Infinite checkpoints to give people exactly the amount of lives I choose. I've already tried it out and it works perfectly. This is a luxury I didn't have when I made this. Sorry if I got off subject, some times it's hard not to ramble on. Thanks.

just played this level:

+
> Great idea, love it. The different area's are great and keeps the level interesting
> High replay value, will certainly play it again to get a higher score
> Great platform fun!

-
> It's a little bit hard, but that doesn't have to be a bad point, i see it more as a challenge :-)

had a go at this last night. the changes you made really made a difference.

i might have spotted a small bug but not sure. on the rainbow winches, i think one of the sponges got caught on the electrified wall after i cleared it. it only happened in the corner of my eye right enough so can't be sure, but worth investigation i think.

Not bothering to read all the other posts, so don't mind me if I repeat something. I'll comment as I go.

+ I like that the level explanation is optional. I hate being forced to read text esp. on replays.
The glass jumping in one of the first sections is really hard.
+ I like the variation in materials and music between sections.
- The section with the rocket wheel thing that you have to fly around is really repetitive...
- On the rainbow stripe section , it's possible to hit the electrified walls while you're still hanging from the 2nd swingy thing. Also if you swing far enough left and get shocked the cloth can get stuck on the left side of the electrified wall making it (possibly) impossible to retrieve.

Replaying:

- I don't really like the visible dark matter in the section where the wedding theme plays (with the creepy trees and gray gas) that the swings are attached to. Can you change that dark matter into gas and glue it to some small, invisible dark matter?
+ oh man that rainbow wave thing is so cool
- If you grab one of the smashing blocks in the stripey rainbow race (dare I call it "rainbow road?") you can circumvent that obstacle entirely walking along the platform at the top.
+ I went back to see that was in that section after finishing the race and the hamster wheel style thing was too cool!

Very nice, it's too bad you have to intentionally die in order to see everything. Maybe in a sequel you could make it all the same difficulty and make the level selection pseudo-random.

Edit: Also I played Fully Automated Machine, and it was pretty amazing. I didn't like the "everything is rusty metal" look, but the mechanisms were cool.

Thanks for the feedback. Looks like you've found stuff other people haven't, so thanks. I'll see what I can do about this stuff. Also just want to say I was doing some work on this tonight, and found a pretty bad bug in the teleportation system. In the rainbow area you would lose all your lives, so I'm glad I found that. I fixed and republished it, so if anybody dies and cant finish
please let me know so I can fix. Thanks

I checked out this level a few minutes ago and was pleasantly suprised at the combination of good platforming with a new mechanic (the teleporting stuff )

Pros:
+Teleporting
+The different ability levels
+Everyone would enjoy this because of the varying difficulty
+The design
+Some pretty good platforming
+Nice little touches in design

Cons:
-Should design your own characters
-Perhaps just a touch more original platforming

Overall I rated it 4 stars because of the Mm elephant and some unorignal platforming. Still a very good level though that only needs a few more touches to make it a brilliant level.

Really nice concept. I noticed earlier that you said something along the lines of ''it can be a real pain for the good players but even the not so good can still finish it''. Very good point and an awesome idea for the community...

I played it through properly first, and then once I'd done that I decided to die at different stages to see where it would take me and how you had put it together. Very impressive!

Slight criticisms, (I skimmed over previous posts and think others may have said something similar). Some stages feel a little repetitive and while some of the platforming is very original, there are parts which aren't.

Overall still 5 stars for the concept and the way it's been put together.

I played this last night, and really enjoyed it. This is definately kind of a new "sub-genre" level. It's not really a story, and not really a mini game challenge. It's like a whole bunch of challenging mini-games bundled into a full level..... whew.... had a fantastic time.

The jumping on the glass part near the beginning was pretty brutal, but appropriate. I finally got through that and ended up getting through (I think) about all the challenges.

I don't personally have any suggestions for improvements. I didn't find a single thing in the level "cheap", and it was well designed. Very innovative, as so far all your levels have been.

Gave it 5 stars and a heart.

I played this the other day! From what I got from it in one play through, it was really well done. I'll come back tomorrow after I've tried it a few more times and give you a full feedback. ^_^ I'm off to play Portal. Or Half-life... Haven't decided.2009-05-07 07:33:00

Sorry its taken me so long to F4F. I have been busy and i totally forgot.
Anyway:
I really enjoyed the level. I got right to the points at the end of the first section. (and here was me thinking i was a mediocre platformer!)
The rainbow wave ruled
Man, that slope on the hard bit is solid! i oly had one life left when I did this.
Woo! race section! If only i could have continued and played the rest!
Really good level, I can't find any major faults. Rated 5/5, ingenious tag and a heart!

I've just played it two times.

At the first part i died at the first glass platform. Then i was teleported to a room with a wave of rainbow-colored sponges, which was indeed very impressive. Then i got teleported to a race, and i had to run in a hamster wheel. I then got to the end of the room, and got teleported to the end of the level.

So then i restarted the level. This time, i got past the first glass platform, but died at the next glass platforms. I then got teleported to some metal pillars trying to crush me, got past it, and then got teleported to some area with a lot of sponges that swinged about wildly. I died a few times there, but i got to the end and got teleported to an area with a lot of spinning crosses, and i didn't make it to the end. I died.

*Ahem*

I liked the initial level, where you get teleported to a room which is chosen by how far you've got in the initial level. I liked all the rooms after that, the rainbow wave is nice, and i liked the race as well. I liked the kickback levels as well. The ending was also clever, with a speech bubble that depends on what rooms you had beaten.

How did you make that teleporting system? I mean, the system in the initial level that teleports you to a certain room depending on where you die? And the disappearing checkpoints when you lose a few lives? And the kickback teleports?

Rated with five stars, and tagged with Great. By the way, the description has almost no information on the level (except that you must play on your own), and the name doesn't help either. I don't think you would get many plays with a name like "Teleport to ?????", and "PLEASE PLAY WITH ONE PLAYER" as a description.
